To want to take my 12kg dog in the plane cabin

I’m going to Europe this summer and I’d like to take my dog but I dont want to put the dog in the hold. There are a number of airlines that allow dogs in the cabin if they are under 10kg (KLM, AirFrance, ITA air).

does anyone know of an airline from UK to Europe that would take a 12kg dog?

thanks!

I am extremely allergic to cats, it triggers asthma and last time it resulted in me being taken to A&E. It is not just anaphylaxis that can be life threatening. I don’t think it’s that unusual. I also don’t struggle with day to day living, my allergy is triggered by being in a room with a cat or being in a house where a cat lives. I don’t have a reaction if I am briefly in contact with someone who owns a cat etc. I am also allergic to some dogs but less so. I am really pleased it’s not normal in the Uk for pets to be in the cabin.

I love dogs, but would hate to fly next to one. Imagine a 4hr flight next to a stinky dog!! Sorry Op, think you're going to have to put it in the hold or drive

How does it work with an assistance dog, especially those who assist the visually impaired? A lab or golden retriever (common breeds for dogs for the partially sighted or blind) are large dogs. They’d need a seat for themselves wouldn’t they?

I fly a lot but I’ve never seen any kind of animal (non-human, that is) in the cabin.

I've seen on the TV where they sit in the front row so have lots of leg room

Vikina · 30/09/2023 16:30

I was on a train recently where a dog had a shit on the floor. I can't imagine what that would be like on a plane. Definitely shouldn't be allowed.

They have to fit in front of the seat of the handler, typically they'd get the extra leg room space, but if they don't fit within that space the handler would have to buy an extra seat for the floor space - just as an overweight passenger who doesn't fit into a seat may have to buy a second seat really.

Flying with an assistance dog out of the UK is extremely difficult, the air industry doesn't appear to believe the EA applies to them and is being very slow to catch on.

I understand it is vital dogs ARE safe and well controlled on a flight, its not like the bus, you can't just stop and kick the dog/handler team off if there's an issue, but it would help if there were clear routes to training for flight with access to flight simulators/training planes etc (some people have managed it but its been a big struggle).

All the teams I know who have flown from the UK have worked extremely hard to get to that point, travelling to airports, using training planes etc - none have stupidly large dogs or ridiculously unsuitable breeds either.

It really isn't something to worry about though, I could count the number of dogs who have actually flown within, or out of the UK on my fingers, it is THAT hard to do and that low a number.

I do this because its cheaper although not 12kg but actually it is not recommended, they are much safer in the special area of the hold which is climate controlled for live cargo and much less stressful. I don't know wher else people do this outside of the US and Middle East although S Korea seems to be an MN Hell in that pets go absolutely everywhere! It isn't a funnexoerience travelling with pets by air, they don't enjoy it and sometimes it takes a whole for them to get their wag back, especially if it's a noisy flight

I think you should research the physical risks and the psychological impacts of dogs travelling as cargo. I did and decided I just couldn't do that to my dog, even though it was a massive pain. If it's bad in the cabin, imagine how much worse alone in the hold. He would almost certainly believe that he had been completely abandoned as well. It's awful, it really is.

My friends flew their two much larger than 10kg dogs down to the south of France for summer - had to charter a jet. 30k I believe.

One of them drives them down and back now...

BitOutOfPractice · 30/09/2023 16:36

Exactly @Allergyallergy will they check nobody on the flight has a severe allergy to the animal like they do with peanut allergies?

I cannot think of anything worse than being stuck on a flight with a cat (aldo allergic though not as severe as you, just enough to make it a very miserable scenario). I have been on a flight with a dog in the us. I found the whole thing ludicrous.

Embarrassingly, quite a lot of my 'inner life' consists of considering how I will get my dog to my new place in the Cyclades when I win the lottery next week.

Also whether it's possible in engineering terms to create an artificial beach where I want to build my new place, and who I would fly out to join me where they would hear that I'm giving them a mill, and in what order 😂

Check K9 Jets, I follow them on insta. Private jets for people and their animals.

“ this summer”? It’s nearly October, I think you have missed the boarding call for this summer.

What's your dog going to do in Europe? Woof at the Sistine chapel?

Clever dog. Is it called Muttley by any chance?

lazymum99 · 30/09/2023 16:50

I googled K9jets and they seem to predominantly fly between the US and Europe or the UK. The only flights to and from UK is to Dubai

It would take two seconds to clean up, if it became normal to take dogs you could just have puppy pads

Thank fuck this isn’t a thing

Actually, it IS a thing. And I just LOVE that you hate it. So I WILL be doing it 😘

It costs £75 and they go in the cabin in a carrier.

You can't do it on flights departing/arriving in the UK

Yes you can. Costs £75. They have to be in a dog carrier.

I hate to disappoint crazy dog-haters on this thread, but I have flown many time with my dog in the cabin. It's definitely allowed (if weight-restrictions are met). Bad luck for all the Mumsnetters.

But he used to just sleep under the seat. Didn't wander around pooing on anyone and no one died 🤷‍♀️

Lingfield01 · 30/09/2023 17:01

Is it April 1st?!!

If you're only going to Europe, why can't you drive or take the train over?

No need to take your dog on a plane at all.

Oh we could easily do that. Just want to make it super easy for everyone so we get more time in our second home. We have our winter home in the Alps and was thinking of going there in the summer with dog. Won’t be doing it in the winter as we will be skiing. We have our summer home in the South of France but it’s too hot for the dog. Dog will stay in UK home when we go there.

@sleepyscientist I don't want dogshit near me on a plane having to be cleaned up. And the idea of puppy pads is disgusting.
