To want to take my 12kg dog in the plane cabin

I’m going to Europe this summer and I’d like to take my dog but I dont want to put the dog in the hold. There are a number of airlines that allow dogs in the cabin if they are under 10kg (KLM, AirFrance, ITA air).

does anyone know of an airline from UK to Europe that would take a 12kg dog?

thanks!

I would love to be seated next to a dog on a plane, I really don't understand the MN mentality of banning dogs from everywhere. Obviously I get some people are allergic. No way would a dog of mine go into a hold, and I think and plane situation would be too stressful generally for them. I would opt to drive, I know lots of people who drive with their dogs to the continent, one friend hired a motor home and toured Europe with her dogs. Just make sure you have the right documentation.

More self entitled fuckwittery.

Do what everyone else does and take the ferry.

You do realise that most healthy adult dogs are toilet trained, and won't wee or poo, unless outdoors, don't you? They would recognise the interior of a plane as being equivalent to a room, so would be extremely unlikely to void in it, unless ill.

That said, I agree with others that the ferry is the best option to use here.

Having seen a dog cock it's leg up against the Specials Board in a local cafe and the owner walk off without even letting the staff know then I'm not sure I agree with you.

I don't want to wind anyone up, I genuinely didn't think it was a thing. I know people can be allergic to cats but people take them on flights too. I'm allergic to peanuts, people take those on flights.

And the crew make an announcement saying not to open any nuts if they've been informed that someone allergic is on board. If the dog stays in a carrier I guess that would be the same.

vestedinterests · 30/09/2023 14:53

@ohtowinthelottery was the specials board outside? If so, the dog was just marking it which is jot the same as toileting inside

caringcarer · 30/09/2023 14:54

Brittany ferries let you take a dog but they go on a separate deck because no one wants dogs roaming around a ship and on a plane even less likely. What if the dog needs to toilet?

Clearly a dog that hasn't been toilet trained, with a dickish owner, then. 🙄

I’d really love to have my airline meal with a little bottle of wine while a stranger’s dog messed about at my feet. Not.

What's your dog going to do in Europe? Woof at the Sistine chapel?

😆😄

XelaM · 30/09/2023 15:02

We used to fly with our mini poodle 🐩 all the time. He was 10Kg (on a good day 😃). This was about 10 years ago.

But I have looked into flying with our current dog and the regulations have changed to 8Kg with a crate, so only chihuahuas would qualify (although I have recently flown behind the most adorable shitzu pup.

People who don't know that dogs are allowed on planes (depending on airline) live very sheltered lives.

Blackandwhitemakesgrey · 30/09/2023 15:02

There is a lot of dislike of dogs on this thread.

The UK are generally cat people and if people asked about carrying a cat onboard, I think many wouldn’t have an issue. The same people would probably refute the necessity of a carrier and assist their cats are legally free to roam ;and poo) everywhere 🤣

Give me a dog any day but for the dog’s sake don’t make them fly, I think their ears would hurt on a plane.

Yet cats can roam into anyone’s garden and poo and it’s dismissed as their right to roam!

Mirabai · 30/09/2023 15:04

Drive and go through the tunnel like everyone else.

They’re in an airline bag. At their owners feet.

Dogs aren’t just casually dicking around the cabin arguing about wether they ordered the vegetarian or the kosher meal and having a mini pot of Pringles ffs

PricklyPineapple · 30/09/2023 15:05

cuddlebear · 30/09/2023 14:15

Not true. Please see the CAA link. You can travel with an assistance dog.

Not sure about the shetland ponies though!!!

i meant general, non assistant dogs! The OP didn’t say her dog was an assistant dog so I’m assuming she just wants to bring her pet? I wish the rules were different as I’d love to bring my little 4kg pup on holidays, but she’s definitely not an assistant dog!

What the f is an airline bag? You mean a little dog is in some sort of bag, like bagging up a pair of trainers for the gym?

I begin to think that dog owners are really weird.

Not by me it's not. I've picked 3 lots of cat sh1t up off my lawn in the last week. Neither of my NDNs have cats so I've yet to catch the offender but when I do it'll be getting the hose pipe treatment.

sleepyscientist · 30/09/2023 15:08

@ASCCM nope the person with the allergy should get the next flight as they are the one with an issue. I'm allergic to plants, perfumes, cats etc Like most people with similar allergies it's atopic so sneezing, coughing and skin rashes. I would just drop a few extra antihistamines and get on with it.

If someone is anaphylatic to dogs they are also going to react to the dog hair on my clothes so doubt they would want to sit next to me.

I would love to see dogs allowed on planes even if that meant cats were allowed

MissingMoominMamma · 30/09/2023 15:09

OP, I take my dog to Europe every summer. We travel by van/ferry. We have rest stopovers on the way. We can do this because I have 6 weeks off, but if you’re going for a short holiday, it’s probably better to book your dog into a good kennel, or get a house sitter. You have to book your dog into a vet no more than 48 hours before you re-enter Britain, for a tapeworm treatment, and it’s also worth noting that in some places in Europe, dogs aren’t allowed on beaches during the summer months.

Theredjellybean · 30/09/2023 15:16

I am a dog owner and dog lover and I like the fact i can now take them more places, however i agree with most, in the cabin of an airplane is no place for a dog.
I flew in the states once and was in utter disbelief as a woman got on with an drooling, snarling ( what i now know was an xl bully) dog and sat it on the seat next to her, with some other poor passenger on the other seat next to it .
Frankly i would have asked to move.

Can you imagine a few dogs on a flight all getting angsty with each other ? or with passengers, not with standing the people who are nervous or scared of dogs or have genuine allergies ?

If you want to take your dog to europe - drive much better for all.
Or just leave the dog behind

This.

Why would you? It's not fair to the dog or other passengers.

OhcantthInkofaname · 30/09/2023 15:18

OMG why?
