To intensely dislike Rishi Sunak?

He has no backbone, no coherent policies (u-turns a dozen times a day)and no understanding of ordinary people's lives. Plus he wears all his clothes a size too small, which really irritates me.

The problem is not Sunak as a person. It’s the in-fighting that won’t go away in the Conservative Party. They are divided on taxation. Historically they are the party of low tax. That’s not the case right now due to fighting inflation. We do need inflation reduced because it hits the poorest the hardest. Tax cuts rarely benefit the poorest very much.

Be careful about disliking someone because of their clothes. I’d rather have someone with a brain. His trousers are a bit longer now but his suits are modern and immaculate. If you are slim you can carry it off.

Beware Kemi Badenoch and the awful Suella. They are lining themselves up to challenge for the leadership. Both are right wing snd unsuitable. Or you could have Penny Mordaunt. She holds a sword well but what does she stand for? Who knows. So it’s all very well not liking Sunak but look at the others?! God help
us.

You have identified one of the most interesting things that will happen after the next election. The blood bath of the Tory leadership contest, in order to be the the person who leads the GE after next.

What worries me though is that Labour with a majority of over 100, perhaps even as much as double what Johnson secured and with no opposition, will be able to do whatever they like and probably no one will be paying attention as the newspapers will be too excited by who is stabbing whom in the front in the Tory party.

BIossomtoes · 01/10/2023 19:56

A lot of, if not most, pensioners worked during the last 25 years @Badbadbunny. Both of us worked for 21 of them. I favour a property tax - our house has made obscene capital growth since we bought it.

Tories fall short of 100 election candidates needed for conference deadline

“We all know the importance of giving our prospective parliamentary candidates the time they need to increase their name recognition, build their local profile, and hit as many doorsteps as possible up and down their constituencies."

Considering the article says only around 50 Conservative MPs have announced they are stepping down thus far - where would 100 selected candidates 'build their local profile'?

I wasn't aware that James Cracknell had been selected for Colchester - hopefully a popular choice.

I am sure that Cracknell will fit in famously in the Tory party.

I'm not keen on politicians flying business class, but I'm sure that Clav will come back to explain why dear Rishi absolutely must travel by private jet or helicopter...

I look forward to Keir Starmer's manifesto pledge that he won't travel by private jet or helicopter.

We also have low productivity and not enough people paying tax yet we want more and more and more. We need to understand the balance between taxation, productivity, work and services. Until
we do, those in work are over burdened. Particularly the younger workers.

It is important I think also to remember that we have a government who is determined to stop people who like to move here to pay taxes from doing so, while welcoming those who will pay little or no tax to the Exchequer.

Quite.

We don’t need it. He doesn’t do it.

Are the Tories only intending to contest those seats they already hold?

I guess it makes sense, no point wasting time and energy on seats they are definetely not going to win.

With your fine research skills @Clavinova are you able to tell us where in the manifesto Sunak ran on and is now implementing it said that the government would do all it possible could do damage the environment?

@BIossomtoes congratulations on your appointment as Labour party manifesto writer.

Do you know something we don't about when the election will be?
I take it this autumn since you are busy writing already?

TizerorFizz · 01/10/2023 19:39

@Alexandra2001 Other countries have a mix of taxation and insurance for health. We need to move towards this. Sunak’s clothes? Read the OP. Suits are too small! They are not.

VAT is one tax. There are loads of others. Historically the Cons position themselves as taxing less. They just do. Except now they are not and it’s causing angst.

There are issues with all the parties on taxation. I read in the Sunday Times today that we have a country that wants green policies, until we have to pay for them. You can repeat that position for everything else that’s desirable. The uk largely doesn’t like paying. So the Cons win in Uxbridge. There might be shocks in store next year.

We are looking at overall tax burden and the Tories, like Labour, have generally increased it, regardless of their positioning, whatever that means. FWIW Denis Healey, in real terms, reduced the overall tax burden...

Other countries do not all use insurance model and even those that do, spend per head far more than the UK, hence they have more Doc's and Nurses too.

Uxbridge was won by 400 votes, a single issue and on a small turn out, any party that reads too much into that are idiots.

TizerorFizz · 01/10/2023 20:15

There’s a huge issue with a property tax. It forces people to sell. Except that’s far from easy. Many folk won’t be able to pay it. What about people on benefits that own property? Not everyone has spare cash in an already highly taxed society.

Pension savings are already taxed. The doctors are finding this out. However older people have had a lot of advantages and I think paying NI, if they pay tax, could be introduced. Maybe at a lower rate? Both parties know older people vote. So we’ve had decades of wooing them with policies paid for by those who work. We have to accept the burden should be shared more equitably.

352 Conservative MPs would be fine.

The average worker has no say in the UKs productivity, thats down to UK Govt investment decisions, policies on health and industries ability/desire to automate.
The Govt continually slash pay in the public sector, private sector follows... now we have so many working people not paying much tax.... plus have to claim benefits in order not to starve.

Whose fault is that?

Honestly, why do you bother when you and we know perfectly well that there are SO many clips of Sunak sitting next to Johnson and cheering him on as he blatantly lies? To say nothing of him blatantly lying on his own account? Every time you do this you just expose the paucity of your resources.

I don't know why you bother tussling over this issue. I once drove at 39 mph in a 30 zone. I went on a speed awareness course. End of story. My 'crime' was a lot worse than standing gormlessly in a meeting room.

Sunak's problem is that he's always the one standing gormlessly in a meeting room, when he should be leading his party and doing the work of being PM of the UK.

TizerorFizz · 01/10/2023 20:20

Who would want to be an mp? My DD worked with a former female mp. Who on earth would put up with the abuse, party in fighting and unsocial hours etc when they can earn substantially more doing another job? DD changed her thoughts about it very quickly. They will get (sheep) candidates but the quality of MPs is poor.

Its amazing the Tories are already 13 MPs fewer than they were after the election in 2019.

Perhaps Sunak should go on a Rules Obedience course? so he can learn that if you tell the nation to do something for the good of others, you should also obey your own laws... he could just as easily have walked out of side room... but chose not too...

Pretty fundamental in a Leader.

Is that why he doesn't go to the major international events like UNGA?

My personal opinion is that Keir Starmer has told more 'lies' during the last three years than Boris Johnson - I expect that many people on the left of the Labour Party would agree with me.

TizerorFizz · 01/10/2023 20:26

@TooBigForMyBoots Do you really think anyone can lead the Cons right now? They have too many factions and internal strife. I would imagine he’s heartily sick of them. What would you do with Rees-Mogg and his ilk? How would you manage them? Do what they want or upset them so they cause more trouble? Labour has had similar issues down the years too.

BIossomtoes · 01/10/2023 20:28

They haven’t asked me to write the manifesto @jgw1. Perhaps Clav knows something I’m not yet party to.
