He has no backbone, no coherent policies (u-turns a dozen times a day)and no understanding of ordinary people's lives. Plus he wears all his clothes a size too small, which really irritates me.

he also seems to turn a blind eye to India supporting the Russians over Ukraine, Russia, a country which really is a threat to Europe an our way of life, not to mention the Ukrainians and the '000s killed/tortured by them too.

https://www.iglobalnews.com/newsviews/labour-has-long-strong-relationship-with-india-sir-keir-starmer-to-open-uk-india-week-2023

FYI @Clavinova , i don't agree with Labour/Starmer on this at all, however, at least his family isn't personally gaining financially from carrying on business with Russia.

Perhaps you would also care to disagree with Sunaks policies on India? no i didn't think so...

it seems rather odd we support Ukraine, punish ourselves with sanctions against Russia, whilst all along backing India as they trade freely with Russia, to the extent that India supplies Russia with the components to make weapons that then kill Ukrainian civilians and target grain exports, causing UK shoppers to have higher food prices..... also give Russia the foreign currency it needs to maintain its war effort...

All very odd & not just the UK either.

NEW: The Tories are struggling to find people to fill seats at their own conference

Top Tories are now being told to stuff the front rows so TV cameras have people to cut away to

They’re also struggling to find candidates for the next election according to The Telegraph.

The Conservative Party has fallen well short of a deadline to find 100 candidates for the next election in time for its annual conference, an analysis has found.

Earlier in the year, Greg Hands, the party chairman, said that he was “accelerating” candidate selection to have 100 prospective MPs in place by the time the Tories met at their conference in Manchester, which begins on Sunday.

You are not alone in disliking Rishi.

Alexandra2001 · 01/10/2023 18:39

Got to admit, i dislike Greg Hands more than i do Sunak, reminds of the old World at War series on Goebbels

I'm not keen on politicians flying business class, but I'm sure that Clav will come back to explain why dear Rishi absolutely must travel by private jet or helicopter...

30p Lee is the absolute nadir for me.

The current tory party is awash with candidates isn't it?

I actually find Lee funny, surely no one takes him seriously? a bit like my former MP Scott Mann and his idea to put GPS trackers in knife handles to tackle the UK s epidemic of stabbings....

I mean where do they get these idiots from?

anniegun · 01/10/2023 18:55

He has made Suella Braverman Home Sec and Lee Anderson Deputy Chairman. He is the richest PM in history and is trying to abolish inheritance tax for his family. He will screw the country and then vanish to his California home. His kids will never have to rely on a crumbling school or an overworked GP. He is now trying to cancel imaginary taxes on meat and compulsory car sharing to generate positive headlines in the Daily Mail. His only appeal is that he is not Truss or Johnson

You do not get to be Prime Minister of the UK and Northern Ireland by being ‘gormless’!

Not without being an ERG puppet, or whatever it is they are calling themselves now.

If there had been an actual leadership contest, Sunak would have lost.

The problem is not Sunak as a person. It’s the in-fighting that won’t go away in the Conservative Party. They are divided on taxation. Historically they are the party of low tax. That’s not the case right now due to fighting inflation. We do need inflation reduced because it hits the poorest the hardest. Tax cuts rarely benefit the poorest very much.

Be careful about disliking someone because of their clothes. I’d rather have someone with a brain. His trousers are a bit longer now but his suits are modern and immaculate. If you are slim you can carry it off.

Beware Kemi Badenoch and the awful Suella. They are lining themselves up to challenge for the leadership. Both are right wing snd unsuitable. Or you could have Penny Mordaunt. She holds a sword well but what does she stand for? Who knows. So it’s all very well not liking Sunak but look at the others?! God help
us.

ilovesooty · 01/10/2023 19:06

I don't care what Sunak looks like and I've said nothing insulting about his appearance. I do care that he has a total absence of decency and integrity and is entirely self serving.

Sunak is pretty right wing himself and alternative isn't Braverman or Mordant, ist Starmer.

As for "the party of low taxation" well, Thatcher may have lowered the higher rates drastically and lower rates a little but she also took VAT from 8% to 15%
Plus of course lower taxes mean poorer public services, no country has low taxes and high quality health and education...

So what do people want?

I' ve not read a single post that says they dislike Sunak because of his cloths.

Passepartoute · 01/10/2023 17:17

@Clavinova, is there any chance of an explanation of why you defend Sunak despite his repeated and very public support of Johnson whilst he lied to Parliament and the British public over and over again?

Blind Tory dogma of course.

TizerorFizz · 01/10/2023 19:39

@Alexandra2001 Other countries have a mix of taxation and insurance for health. We need to move towards this. Sunak’s clothes? Read the OP. Suits are too small! They are not.

VAT is one tax. There are loads of others. Historically the Cons position themselves as taxing less. They just do. Except now they are not and it’s causing angst.

There are issues with all the parties on taxation. I read in the Sunday Times today that we have a country that wants green policies, until we have to pay for them. You can repeat that position for everything else that’s desirable. The uk largely doesn’t like paying. So the Cons win in Uxbridge. There might be shocks in store next year.

As you alluded to, Thatcher actually increased tax, both in real terms, and as a percentage of GDP during her time in office - but spun it as tax cuts - the cuts were to shift the burden from the rich to the poor of course.

Clavinova · 01/10/2023 19:42

Tories fall short of 100 election candidates needed for conference deadline

“We all know the importance of giving our prospective parliamentary candidates the time they need to increase their name recognition, build their local profile, and hit as many doorsteps as possible up and down their constituencies."

Considering the article says only around 50 Conservative MPs have announced they are stepping down thus far - where would 100 selected candidates 'build their local profile'?

I wasn't aware that James Cracknell had been selected for Colchester - hopefully a popular choice.

TizerorFizz · 01/10/2023 19:42

We also have low productivity and not enough people paying tax yet we want more and more and more. We need to understand the balance between taxation, productivity, work and services. Until
we do, those in work are over burdened. Particularly the younger workers.

Passepartoute
Unfortunately, however, Sunak's tweet referred to a promise not to impose new taxes to discourage flying, whereas your link refers to him reducing an existing aviation tax.

My link quite clearly claims that Sunak rejected the proposal for a new tax;

Rishi Sunak slashed aviation tax on domestic flights and rejected a new ‘frequent flyer levy’ after lobbying by the airline industry

The Labour Party spokesman quoted in the article (March 2023) is in favour of a new frequent flyer levy/tax.

Why shouldn't those who choose to frequently pollute the world pay more for doing so?

Have they rebranded as the NatCs or is that another bunch of loons?

Dunno Clav. Maybe Conservative Central Office could help you out. Perhaps they’ve got a series of scandals brewing or a load of seats where last time’s unsuccessful candidate has decided not to stand again.

Nail on the head. Workers have been hit time and time again, yet the likes of pensioners haven't been hit with the increases in NIC, nor workplace pension deductions, nor student loan repayments, not the removal of child benefit for higher rate taxpayers (OAPs tend not to have dependent children), etc. Tax rises (and other wages deductions) in the past 25 years have all been aimed at workers and they've now squeezed them until the pips squeak and the limit has been reached. Future tax rises need to be aimed at all those who've not been hit over the past 25 years, i.e. on pensions, investment income, etc.
