To think this, is how the Tories could win?

Sunak is setting out his stall as pro-car:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/28/rishi-sunak-expected-to-limit-powers-of-councils-in-england-to-curb-car-use-20mph-speed-limit-traffic-camera-fines

This could actually swing it for him. People sink vast amounts of time and money into their cars, they're aspirational status symbols. The UK loves it's cars.

@Lastchancechica its already ruined. Or haven’t you noticed.

amicissimma · 29/09/2023 12:40

" They prefer to have those as reasons to vote in a way they know is harming other people but believe is ok for them."

Like just about everyone else. I very much doubt that the number of altruists who vote against their own best interests, in favour of what they believe are the interests of others, is very large.

Crapsummer2023 · 29/09/2023 12:41

The Tory echo chambers and usual loudmouths will be championing his silly announcements but the tired and weary normal people are just waiting for their voices to be heard at the ballot box.

The Tory’s are just preaching to their base who would have voted for them anyway, well those who aren’t in Wetherspoons all day. They are not converting working people who work their arses off but are seeing their living standards fall through the floor whilst paying more tax for the privilege. No amount of screaming ‘small boats!’, ‘cars!’, ‘woke!’ will change that reality.

You honestly seem to have no grasp of the impact of a real recession or depression.

Or they might just want to continue to drive, work, identify as a woman. Not much to ask for.

I am still waiting Trashed…

You're going to be waiting a while then.

It's interesting though that you evidently regard explanation of why the Tories are fucked as politically partisan. It really isn't. It's not even an inherently left wing view, let alone specifically Labour. There are lots of other political parties in the UK whose leadership no doubt also understand that the Tories are irredeemably screwed and why, as well as non-aligned people.

Katharinablumwasinnocent · 29/09/2023 12:46

Agreed. Go on other echo chambers and most people are moaning about the current government, even on Conservative Home. In the scale of things MN audience is tiny. No one in reality is influenced by anyone’s comments on here. @Lastchancechica thinks she’s very clever for copy and pasting clap trap from Conservative woman but people can see the state the UK is in with their very own eyes. Most of the polls say the tories are unpopular. It’s probably true.

EasternStandard · 29/09/2023 12:39

Jaysus at this point it’s just words

Ok yes agreed my view of recessions being bad is the same as the electorate 👍

The precise opposite, in fact. The electorate clearly don't agree with you.

Yes and that is precisely the point.

Apart from trans rights and building on the greenbelt and inviting more economic migrants into the country - literally no one has the first clue what Starmer stands for, what the Labour policies are! Even now, it’s as clear as mud.

I was open to a political change actually but as I heard Starmer lurch from one ill advised soundbite to another. I have become increasingly alarmed at just how incompetent they are.

Why are you even voting for them??

Fightyouforthatpie · 29/09/2023 12:49

changedenom2023 · 29/09/2023 10:52

I've named changed for this.

I work in this field, I'm a local authority transport planner in a conservative council area. The general consensus in our team and the wider industry, is that the government have finally lost the plot. In our area we struggle to get any schemes through that aren't car based.

The bus industry is on its arse, and due to funding cuts, subsidies are a fraction of what they were. We've tried to get money made available for buses from our own funds, and our council won't prioritise it. Most of our transport funds go on fixing potholes and resurfacing roads. We shy away from any projects will add any time to a motorist's journey. Any cycling or walking schemes, and in particular those that reduce road space are fought tooth and nail. Even the way in which value for money of schemes is calculated is weighted in favour of journey times and efficient car use. I was talking the other day with a colleague, and we both agreed getting anything delivered is nigh on impossible. It's almost laughable.

We are due to start writing a new local transport plan, a document we are required to have, and which government wanted all authorities to update. we were led to believe this new plan would be more focused on offering better alternatives and travel options and a genuine desire to reduce carbon. We were told we'd get policy guidance on how to write the plan more than 12 months ago now. And we're still waiting.

This is a shambolic way to make policy.

Around here we have a perfect storm of thousands of houses added to our small town. Zero additional public transport provision to add to the pitiful and highly unreliable bus service, no extra provision for cycling or walking, and yet the new builds are adding junctions, traffic lights etc and changing priority on existing routes, all of which is designed to slow traffic to a crawl while adding vast numbers of cars.

‘Or they might just want to continue to drive, work, identify as a woman. Not much to ask for.’

Yes because the other major parties wish to ban all driving, ban working and ban women from calling themselves women.

I’m cringing for you.

Labour/Lib Dem should create a montage video showing all of the Tory’s ‘greatest hits’ of the last 13 years and share everywhere in the run up to the election so nobody forgets what an utter shit show this has been.

Personally I would welcome a Bobby from Dallas ‘it was all a dream’ moment to wipe this period from my memory.

It is also just a thing that tends to happen when parties have been in a long time. The next GE will be in probably late 2024 or 2025, so the Tories will have been in nearly 15 years at that point. There's no example since full suffrage of an incumbent party winning a majority after so long. Major in 92 got the closest and that wasn't quite 13 years.

cardibach · 29/09/2023 12:51

Lastchancechica · 29/09/2023 11:27

I think the conservatives deserve a chance to run without the weight of the financial meltdown in 2008 and saving us from the abyss, brexit ( that labour conveniently ducked despite millions of Labour voters supporting Leave) the pandemic and the war, they have been very unlucky to have to contend with all of that. I would like to see what they can do with some space to implement growth, ambition and innovation.

Edited

They’ve had nearly 14 years. All those things - that’s what governments are for, to manage issues. No government has a run without any issues.
What have they done to improve anything for anyone except the top little echelon and their mates in the last 14 years?

I didn't say that I was voting for them. Why have you assumed that? Completely absurd to think someone must be Labour leaning, let alone voting Labour given the possibility of tactical voting, just because they've said some things you find uncomfortable about Tory electoral chances.

Labour will ruin us.

We are already ruined. We've suffered more than 30 years of steadily more incompetent idiots governing us.

30 years. So a Labour government too?

cardibach · 29/09/2023 12:57

Lastchancechica · 29/09/2023 11:33

That is exactly it!

There are NO positive reasons to vote for Labour. None.

Green new deal.
No reputation for lying and breaking agreements abroad.
Plans to increase staffing across public services.
There are more, but there’s no point you’ll either ask how it will be funded (but never ask the Tories that) or say they won’t do it. For some reason you are still convinced the Tories are competent when all the evidence is that they are both incompetent and actually corrupt.
