To think this, is how the Tories could win?

Sunak is setting out his stall as pro-car:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/28/rishi-sunak-expected-to-limit-powers-of-councils-in-england-to-curb-car-use-20mph-speed-limit-traffic-camera-fines

This could actually swing it for him. People sink vast amounts of time and money into their cars, they're aspirational status symbols. The UK loves it's cars.

Other UK governments managed it. Why is this one so shit at everything?

They were not dealing with millions in previous decades.

Most "economic migrants" come as a result of visas that we grant them. 1.2 million last year.
You do realise, don't you, that climate change and war are a big driver of why people leave? That people risk their lives to come to Europe because their situation in their home country is so dire?

If climate change continues as predicted, a lot of countries are going to become uninhabitable. So when you say we can't "absorb them" you are basically saying you are fine for other humans to be left to die, because they had the misfortune to be born outside Europe.

It is a grotesque attitude in my opinion.

We simply do have the space to absorb potentially billions of migrants moving here for a better life/climate change/war.

We have finite resources and space.

There are other safe countries that could also provide shelter that are bypassed. Like much of the Middle East, China and Eastern Europe for instance.

Why is that do you think that is?

The migrants need not perish, there are other options available to them much closer to home.

1.2 million arrived in 2022 alone. Over a period of five years it is many millions.

BIossomtoes · 01/10/2023 13:28

Estimates and projections aren’t reality. There are currently no millions.

ThinWomansBrain · 01/10/2023 13:29

because we have a ridiculous undemocratic first past the post voting system, and the non tory vote will split behind lib dems/labour/greens & presumably still some SNPs

  • These estimates are provisional, experimental and have a degree of uncertainty around them; we have improved our methods – most notably the inclusion of asylum seekers – which means estimates published in November 2022 covering year ending (YE) June 2022 have been revised.

1.2 million people migrated into the UK and 557,000 people emigrated from it, leaving a net migration figure of 606,000 as of the end of June 2022

2022 was high because of the war in Ukraine

Look at general migration trends, across Med and Mexico to US, and look at why numbers are increasing

Lastchancechica · 01/10/2023 13:37

1.2 million were processed. That figure does not include all of the unprocessed migrants that arrived here by other means.

Anyone underestimating the impact of this is quite frankly deluded.

So Starmer now promises a deal with the EU to accept even MORE migrants when we have completely run out of housing stock, and spending millions on hotels each week as it stands, we can see the cooling effect of his new policy directly in the recent polls.

You seem to be struggling to read. Last year 1.2 million migrants arrived. That is the confirmed registered number.

I have attached an easier article for you to look at.

https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2023/05/25/uk/uk-net-migration-figures-gbr-intl/index.html

Most of them from Ukraine and Hong Kong. On visas so no need to process.

More reason to have a working asylum processing system

UK asylum backlog hits record high as over 175,000 await decision

Potentially billions? Do you know how many millions are in a billion?
1000. At last years migration rates,it I'll take 2000 years to get to a billion migrants.

There are 8 billion people in the world. You seriously can't be saying you expect 1 in 8 of the worlds population to migrate to the UK in the near future.

Either this is huge hyperbole or you've got some serious migrant anxiety issues...

Fast and easy will mean more arrive. People go where governments allow it more

Look at France, before now it was easier and now it’s a no

We’ll see this pick up as numbers increase

@derxa I live in a shit area. So far waiting to be levelled up, still no sign of it.
I have concerns about immigration but still think the tories are shit and have no answers.
One of the reasons my town voted for Brexit was because as a place very much forgotten by central government, the number of migrants from far flung places arriving here and needing to be accommodated has increased dramatically putting a strain on already scarce resources. Back around 2016 we had an influx of Roma gypsies, now it’s refugees from Somalia and Eritrea. Austerity hit hard here. Our council has had to make cuts of £428 million per year since 2010, budget has dropped by 28%. Combination of crumbling public services and hundreds of vulnerable but extremely visible refugees has created a really toxic environment. Again I don’t know what the answer is, being humane and considering the needs of the local community.

What I find most striking about your post is your acceptance that migrants are already at capacity ( as they are in most areas) what exactly do you think is going to happen when Starmer introduces his new latest plan to take even more should he get into No10?

Your area is already a tinder box, so what do you expect will happen? And how on gods earth does this serve you and your family? Your quality of life and future prospects?

Labour have already confirmed helpfully that they will NOT be be increasing funding - so what is the upside for you in particular to vote for Labour?? Your services aren’t going to be improved, nor the housing. You will just have many more migrants.

BIossomtoes · 01/10/2023 13:47

Fast and easy will mean more arrive.

Very odd that wasn’t the case when we were processing quickly. And not wasting millions on substandard accommodation. We need more taxpayers, we could have them with rapid processing and permission to work.

That is not my personal over estimation of migrants moving due to climate change, but a consensus of expert opinion. I will link:
