Sunak is setting out his stall as pro-car:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/28/rishi-sunak-expected-to-limit-powers-of-councils-in-england-to-curb-car-use-20mph-speed-limit-traffic-camera-fines

This could actually swing it for him. People sink vast amounts of time and money into their cars, they're aspirational status symbols. The UK loves it's cars.

It’s also concerning that the UK is underperforming on many of the areas crucial to our long-term prosperity, such as business investment and trade intensity. Making our business environment more attractive to firms at home and abroad must be front of mind in the months ahead.”

Lastchancechica · 30/09/2023 10:10

Anyone that has the energy to read through the CBI report on a Saturday morning might feel very encouraged, the growth for next year looks solid.

If voters choose to take a massive punt on their finances and futures, and vote for an incompetent labour government that’s up to them. The rest of us will stick with the grown ups and choose growth and investment.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 30/09/2023 10:15

The grown ups?? Not heard the Tories called that for a few years 🤣🤣🤣

It is interesting @Lastchancechica that you wish us to read this morning a CBI report from June, rather than more recent reports such as this one which is on their website today -

GDP figures reflect a mixed picture across sectors, but loss of economic momentum could keep the economy stuck in a low gear.

13 September: The latest GDP figures show the economy shrinking by 0.5% in July.

Varied performance across the different sectors makes it difficult to separate the signal from the background noise. Manufacturing and construction output has been volatile recently and strikes continue to weigh on parts of the service sector. Consumer spending is similarly mixed: July was a washout for the retail sector, but a bumper month at the box office.

While rising wages and lower energy prices should aid households and help keep recession at bay, the loss of economic momentum through Q3 now being reported by firms could keep the economy stuck in a low gear.

With encouraging investment key to delivering growth, the Autumn Budget provides a vital opportunity to shore up business confidence. CBI analysis shows that a permanent full expensing regime could boost GDP by 2% by 2030/31 – with benefits felt across the whole economy.

Yes, but not all cities have good public transport systems!

No my son just wants to be able to come home for weekends, which from just 100 miles seems perfectly achievable. But because we're in the North of England, public transport is utterly crap. He thought it would actually be possible to leave work at 5pm (official finishing time) and get home, just 100 miles away, but when leaving at 5pm he can't make the penultimate train over back home, so has to rely on the last train (they only run every 2 hours), and when that gets cancelled he's stuffed!

Of course, in London and the handful of other major cities with good public transport, a "last" train anywhere as early as 7:15 would be laughable, as would any service that only ran every 2 hours! But in the North, apparently it's fine!

That's why people outside a handful of big cities rely on cars. I appreciate for those of you living in London or other big cities, you won't be able to comprehend any city with such poor public transport. It's exactly why people in Leeds, Manchester, York, Liverpool and Newcastle have been complaining about lack of public transport (other than their city centre systems), for decades!

And we've not even started on large towns, small towns and rural areas with ever poorer public transport options. But it's obviously fine because Londoners have good public transport options!

This!

lljkk · 30/09/2023 10:37

Rat Run Rishi polluting the air merrily and making sure nobody can get any where on the roads soon by making other transport options crap. Also endangering anyone who is not in a vehicle. What's not to like, eh?

Blossom you spend your whole life on here posting links and graphs no one reads, and no one cares about.

It’s good if you to admit you don’t care about facts and would rather just go on spouting total bollocks.

Creepy. Stop talking to me.

Someone, i.e. you, doesn't have an argument nor any real understanding of the issues.

Ad mulierem as your primary go-to is a big clue.

Lastchancechica · 30/09/2023 09:59

What on earth are you talking about? The economy is growing, we have millions of jobs!

You just make this stuff up out of nowhere. The British economy is doing exceptionally well:

Yup. One of the " had enough of experts" crowd, no doubt. Apparently you can fool some of the people all of the time...

Zonder · 30/09/2023 11:03

vote for an incompetent labour government

This made me laugh out loud. We have only had one incompetent government for the last 13 years and it wasn't labour.

StowOnTheWold · 30/09/2023 11:09

What the country needs right now from its voters is some objectivity as we approach the GE. A proper informed debate on the issues this country faces over the next generation. Analyses of the facts. Facts checked and re-checked.

It requires a bit of effort to do that, rather than lazy reading of SM sites or tabloid newspapers. It is saddening to realise that more and more people are opting for the easy way out, especially when most people are reasonably intelligent. It is a worrying trend and we have seen the tenacity of that this morning.

Lonelycrab · 30/09/2023 11:25

Labour were booted out and none of us can forget their financial ineptitude. We should never vote for them again, we simply can not afford to crash the economy again

Tory claptrap cliche 101. Do you really think people are going to swallow this nonsense? You’ve all been watching Geebeebies too much.

Thread reeks of frantic Tory desperation. You know you’re screwed. We know you’re screwed. Thrashing around like rats in a sack, trying to gaslight your way out. Would actually be quite funny if it weren’t for the fact there is still potentially a long time until the much needed GE, and still
in charge of the country; even more damage is likely in the frantic scramble for votes.

Whens the conference? That should be fun. Johnson sniping from the sidelines over net zero, desperate to get his mug back on the front page… oooh will Truss make a pitch for the future, she was so misunderstood after all wasn’t she. Will Braverman go full BNP in her speech, forcing Sunak to squirm along as he accepts it knowing he has no choice. Oh. Sorry I forgot. We have a stable government and a strong economy.

Fucking hilarious. 🍿

YouJustDoYou · 30/09/2023 11:28

Labour is a failure of a shit show. The Tories have wrecked everything. There is no viable political party for this country that would improve anything.

Oh look, you posted a link (albeit an out of date one)

Lastchancechica's link is dated yesterday -

It means that the UK economy is now expected to have grown by 1.8% between the final quarter of 2019, before the COVID pandemic hit, and the second quarter of this year.

DuncinToffee's link is out of date.

DuncinToffee
UK GDP is currently (2023 Q1) 0.5 per cent below the level of GDP before the pandemic. Our forecast does not have it passing this level until the third quarter of 2024

Your August headline is out of date as it doesn't account for the 'pretty dramatic upward revisions for 2020 and 2021'

It was reported at the beginning of this month that the UK had fared much better after Covid than previously thought and regained its pre-pandemic size at the end of 2021

As Simon French, the chief economist and head of research at the investment bank Panmure Gordon was quick to note, the entire UK economic narrative, post-pandemic, has just been revised away. All those headlines about the UK economy not being back at pre-COVID levels, or bottom of the G7, are now obsolete.

Hunt’s proposing yet more cuts to public services. Does he not realise there’s no more fat to cut? Tory economics at their finest.

I can’t see where Labour will get extra funding from

The policies are very slim (VAT one)

Either they’ll have to raise taxes or they’ll have the same issues

I don't understand how they can speak about these things as if they're not solely to blame for them in the first place.

The cognitive dissonance displayed by the government and their supporters is staggering.

Lol! You mean like the Tories have been delivering for us all over the last 13 years? not!!! and who gave us Boris and Truss

I hope whatever CHQ is paying you its a lot... oh and Germany has lower inflation than UK, as does Spain, France and even Italy, by quite a margin too.

I find it extremely flattering that you would imagine my posts are worth paying a lot of money for. So thank you.

Secondly all of Europe is battling with high inflation and Germany is in recession. So not a great comparison.

Why won’t you acknowledge that the British economy is doing well? Why do you, and others, persistently talk our country down?

Pessimism never wins elections.

Alexandra2001 · 30/09/2023 12:02

Either they’ll have to raise taxes or they’ll have the same issues

Money can be spent with a long term plan in place, they can also increases taxes on unearned income.

The Tories want to cut Inheritance tax, that currently raises 7bn, IFS predict it will be 15bn in a decade, why? how will that benefit the economy?

Its just handing money to people who are more likely to be Con voters, money which could far more wisely spent.
