To think this, is how the Tories could win?

Sunak is setting out his stall as pro-car:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/28/rishi-sunak-expected-to-limit-powers-of-councils-in-england-to-curb-car-use-20mph-speed-limit-traffic-camera-fines

This could actually swing it for him. People sink vast amounts of time and money into their cars, they're aspirational status symbols. The UK loves it's cars.

The largest expenditure recently has been Covid. I thought it a mistake at the time but most on here were for it and the public demand was high

Then energy support with payments direct to back accounts. There was another just recently. High public demand for this too, including here

The appetite for spending has been huge and hard to watch

If I were to pick a time to be in gov I’d choose the upward swing of a global boom, not war and pandemic, just in terms of ease. But that doesn’t mean you can say the boom times will be useful for what to expect next. The context is very different (Wales struggles too, despite extra per person)

It might not be as hard in next few years as pandemic recedes in time but same issues with aging population will strain funds

The Tories want to cut Inheritance tax, that currently raises 7bn, IFS predict it will be 15bn in a decade, why?

Bribes for votes, like right to buy. The Telegraph is running a campaign to abolish it, conveniently omitting to mention that only about 4% of estates are liable for it.

StowOnTheWold · 30/09/2023 12:09

@Lastchancechica Secondly all of Europe is battling with high inflation and Germany is in recession. So not a great comparison.

And yet just two hours ago you posted a link that made comparisons between the UK economy and European countries that suited your narrative.

Plus the other CBI link that was outdated.

Your card is well marked here for bending facts so you cannot be taken seriously.

I have heard the Russians are desperate for Labour to win - unsurprisingly. Apparently putting some serious resources into the campaign…

Weakness is a gift to them for sure.
The very same John McDonnell, Diane Abbott incredibly criticised NATO for assisting Ukraine.

Much of Labour publicly and openly support our withdrawal from NATO.

How can anyone seriously trust these shysters with our national security, it is just beyond me.

We are a million per cent safer with the conservatives, they have always supported our membership of NATO and always supported Ukraine 🇺🇦

It is beyond me that senior members of the Labour Party can even consider leaving NATO and turning against the brave people of Ukraine that depend on our support for survival.

Alexandra2001 · 30/09/2023 12:14

Rubbish, many larger EU countries have far lower inflation, i listed them.

Germany is starting from having a far larger and healthier economy than the UK, our GDP per Capita is mid 20s and falling, Germany's is increasing, they are also cutting debt, ours is 100% to GDP (going up) Germany is around 65% to GDP.

We all want the UK to do well but lying about the state of our finances does no one any good at all.

‘We will bring back stability’

I heard Rayner go on about this

She had to skip the stability already apparent with Sunak and was woeful on future plans for increased spending

The Tories aren't stable. They haven't been stable for a very long time.
Vote Cameron, get May.
Vote May, get Johnson.
Vote Johnson get Truss.
Then Sunak.

Tory MPs are already posturing for the next leadership race, so the question is will they get rid of Sunak before the GE? If not then
Vote Sunak get Braverman, Mordaunt, who?

The Torys are a chaotic, shambolic mess.

You are being very silly now.

Link please?

BIossomtoes · 30/09/2023 12:17

I think they’ll let him stay until after the election @TooBigForMyBoots but he’s toast as soon as it’s over. I really hope Braverman’s their next leader, they’ll be unelectable for a generation then.

And the Daily Mail. Their readers will fall for it also. Abolishing IHT disproportionately increases the wealth of the richest. But they won't print that. The effective rate of tax on a joint estate of £1.2m is 6.7% but 'sad face pictures' of a couple standing outside a bungalow in Godalming will put a spin on it.

Even Reform UK are not calling for the abolition of IHT, but updating the nil rate band to a reasonable £2m to reflect the value of homes in Greater London and equalising the rate at the same rate as CGT.

DuncinToffee · 30/09/2023 12:29

From Chica's link

the Labour leader said the party’s commitment to Nato “is unshakable”.

AllyCart · 30/09/2023 12:38

Coming back to the original point of the thread, yes absolutely anything seen as a war on motorists is a vote loser in many places.

It's fine if you're in, for example, Greater London as you can fairly easily get into the city and then you travel around with ease on public transport.

Where I live, outside of rush hour I can drive to our nearest city in 25 mins. By public transport, it's a 15 min walk to the bus stop (buses only hourly) then 33 mins on first bus, 34 minutes on second bus and 43 minutes on the third, plus the waits between buses - it totals a minimum of 2h 13mins according to Google maps.

Granted we live in a village in the north but not in the middle of nowhere; there are 10,000+ residents across the villages within 3 miles of our house.

Anything making it easier to get around on public transport up here would attract votes. Anything looking like a concession to even better public transport in the south or increasing the difficulty getting around for us is a sure fire vote loser.

I am sorry to say but Starmers administration is still packed to the brim with bearded Corbynites. They are silenced a lot these days.

The stop the war petition was an exceptional case but they were quickly shut down, but what we see is a very dangerous subset within senior ranks of the Labour Party that genuinely side with Russia over Eastern expansion. Would pull us out of NATO at the first opportunity and flog the nuclear deterrent. This is the truth of the matter.

Those people have not gone away.
They still very much make up a large chunk of the Labour Party be it with a new more acceptable front man and not Corbyn but it’s the same party alright.

I think people conveniently forget who the labour actually is.

Clavinova · 30/09/2023 12:42

the Labour leader said the party’s commitment to Nato “is unshakable”

Odd then that the party chose Seumas Milne to be its Executive Director of Strategy & Communications for the Labour Party (Oct 2015 - April 2020)
