Looks like someone has deliberately felled the famous tree in Sycamore Gap. I can’t believe anyone would do such a thing. I don’t normally get emotional but this has really upset me. It’s absolutely irreplaceable.

Really upset about this - what a pointless act of vandalism. What do you get out of doing that. It's a trek to walk there, carrying a chainsaw, preplanned - ridiculous. If it is a 16 year old I hope they give him 100's of hours of community service, digging holes by hand and planting 100's of trees😡

even if they catch whoever did it. I bet there is no jail term possible for felling a tree. It might be a £500 fine. This needs to change.

Someone cut down a number of sycamores in a property we had recently sold, by trespassing when the new owners were away. They had to remortgage their house to pay the ten-figure fine.

But trees support animals. The loss of trees has a hugely negative affect on animals and in humans. We need trees desperately for everything to balance. You support animals, you need to support their habitat and ecosystems too.

I don't believe this 16 year old did this by themselves. I hope whoever is responsible gets jail time and has to serve it up here in the NE. I can guarantee that that tree would have meant something to many of the prisoners so their life in prison would be thoroughly miserable

TBF this clearly isn't a thread asking your opinion on the conservation of historic trees. Or your opinion on trees in general.

Like PP said, read the room. The tree and area mean a lot to many, many people. It would have meant a lot to many, many animals as well. It would have been home to a lot of wildlife. It's things like this tree that help even the most urban of city dwellers to enjoy and want to protect the countryside.
