Sycamore Gap - tree has been felled!

Looks like someone has deliberately felled the famous tree in Sycamore Gap. I can’t believe anyone would do such a thing. I don’t normally get emotional but this has really upset me. It’s absolutely irreplaceable.

What the fuck?!

LIZS · 28/09/2023 11:17

That is so sad. The Parks Authority believe it may have been deliberate.

madamreign · 28/09/2023 11:19

This deserves jail time

DementedPanda · 28/09/2023 11:19

Sycamore Gap - tree has been felled!
whatchagonnado · 28/09/2023 11:20

Why?
An act of evil. Hope they find the culprits

Cockmigrant · 28/09/2023 11:20

Yes, I saw this on facebook a couple of hours ago and was really upset.
It's an iconic tree and so beautiful.
I'm originally from the North East and it was part of my childhood.

RandomButtons · 28/09/2023 11:24

What is wrong with people! That’s clearly premeditated and planned. Who hikes with a chainsaw? Takes a fair bit of stamina and experience to cut a tree so cleanly through

BelindaBears · 28/09/2023 11:25

Absolutely senseless, malicious vandalism. I really don’t understand what would motivate someone to do this.

CatamaranViper · 28/09/2023 11:26

I live in Northumberland and this tree meant so much to us!

Sounds daft but this is where we got engaged and where I told DH he'd be a dad for the first time.

CherryCokeFanatic · 28/09/2023 11:27

Discusting and vile behaviour hope the perpetrators are found

Blackbyrd · 28/09/2023 11:28

Has anyone any idea at all why someone would do this?

CatamaranViper · 28/09/2023 11:29

Apparently no one has claimed the felling but police are unsure if a crime has actually been committed.

Janieforever · 28/09/2023 11:31

It’s a clean cut. It’s been felled, it didn’t come down on its own. Very clear. We have trees that come down on their own, plus have had to fell others and the difference is immediately clear. That was chain sawed by someone.

very odd thing for someone to do. To deliberately go up there with a chain saw and fell it. And it’s someone who knew what they were doing, it’s not been hacked at.

Wehavealaughdontwe · 28/09/2023 11:35

I am very local and the community is devastated, such a big loss of an iconic landmark and it will have an effect on tourism in the area I imagine. Hundreds of people hike to the tree every day in spring and summer and use the local pubs and facilities near by. Very very sad and a lot of anger felt up here today!

FernFae · 28/09/2023 11:35

Absolutely awful really upset about this just why!!!!

Downtherivers · 28/09/2023 11:35

Does anyone know who owns the land nearby? I wonder if local farmers have become sick of people walking through the fields. As someone has said this must have been planned

Trickedbyadoughnut · 28/09/2023 11:36

Nooooooooo!!!

I hope they find who did this!!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 28/09/2023 11:36

Why? Why? Why?

Wtaf is wrong with people?

Sourisblanche · 28/09/2023 11:38

How bloody senseless is that. My friend hiked past just last week and sent a lovely photo. I was thinking myself about visiting at some point.

Ridemeginger · 28/09/2023 11:39

Someone will know who did this, and I hope they have the decency to turn in the fucker to the authorities.

viques · 28/09/2023 11:39

madamreign · 28/09/2023 11:00

Did they take the wood?

Doesn’t look like it from the picture. And it’s a pretty big thing to pick up and carry away!

I do wonder about what goes on in peoples heads sometime. I hope someone noticed a walker with a chainsaw in their back pack.

It’s in the National Park

😪

That is a stunning picture. You can see why people have fond memories of such a beautiful living thing that has been part of a landscape for so many years.

LIZS · 28/09/2023 11:43

A lot of the land occupied by the Wall and in the Park is privately owned, with permissive footpaths and access.
