Sycamore Gap - tree has been felled!

Looks like someone has deliberately felled the famous tree in Sycamore Gap. I can’t believe anyone would do such a thing. I don’t normally get emotional but this has really upset me. It’s absolutely irreplaceable.

Obviously, neither the 16-year-old nor the 60-year-old has developed any moral compass or conscience.

Well that is certainly true...

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 30/09/2023 09:18

And maybe an empathetic land artist such as Andy Goldsworthy could create a meaningful memorial from the severed trunk .
Oh god no!

LIZS · 30/09/2023 09:30

Just seen someone has planted a random sapling overnight. Was there really no security presence in the circumstances?

TawnyLarue · 30/09/2023 10:01

Nobody needs lecturing about getting perspective on this

again, whilst it’s sad and shitty, when people are comparing it to the murder of a 15 year old (or any murder at all really) I absolutely do think a reminder of perspective is necessary.

Oh no! They should be arrested too

While there is no comparison, it's worthy of consideration that kids who have that sort of destructive streak might 'graduate' to something much worse.

Lots of rumours circulating

Google "farmer evicted near Hadrian's wall" Newcastle Evening chronicle article.

UnctuousUnicorns · 30/09/2023 10:34

You mean the Plankey Mill farmer?

Willmafrockfit · 30/09/2023 10:44

how do you know it was a random sapling planted?

Willmafrockfit · 30/09/2023 10:45

i mean it could have been a planned sapling planted
they said you need to plant trees so the land doesnt forget how to grow sycamore

It's a crime scene still all taped off by the police who along with the National Trust have asked people to stay away

But it's in a fairly remote place where the police can't patrol 24/7 if they even had enough officers

Also people are taking away bits of the tree before the 'experts' have been able to take the cuttings they want for propogation

@Boysgrownbutstillathome I can never understand this argument. Of course terrible things happen. I could tell you a few awful heartbreaking things that have happened that years later I still haven't recovered from. This doesn't mean that I can't be upset about the needless destruction of a beautiful living thing which was just minding its own business, doing no harm. In fact doing the opposite of harm. Just growing and changing and keeping the air pure and watching over people as they cried or proposed or just sat and let the world wash over them. Nobody needs lecturing about getting perspective on this. It's a sad and horrible event that people are perfectly entitled to be upset about.

That's such a beautiful post, I feel exactly the same way 🌳❤️😢

Autumnunmasks · 30/09/2023 11:46

I like that someone has planted a new sapling, that's all we can do tbh 🌳🙏

Exactly- arrest them

Deep state op to distract us from their true agenda abandoning net zero, state of the economy, big Tory donations, big pharma profits etc

Same people don't really believe this do they?

In what world would a post on a discussion forum distract anyone from world issues?

Are you feeling OK?

Haha I don’t believe this. But it is the main story of the last few days/this weekend.

Pay attention to what smaller stories sneak by where the Tory Gov push out some awful stuff whilst we’re all distracted by a single tree.

This is what I hinted at earlier in the thread. Locals were convinced it was him from day dot.

How does that fit with the two people spoken to so far being 16 and 60? Do the police not read the Chronicle?

Man in his 60s, not 60 years old man.

The farmer in that article is 68 not 60

Interesting story though

VivaDixie · 30/09/2023 14:29

Hmm the way he talks in the article about comparining himself to ' a tree with roots'

That's changed since it was initially reported then, it was a 60 year old ywsterday

Guardian still running with headline ''man, 60'' but actual article says ''man in his 60s''

Confusing

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 30/09/2023 16:32

@TawnyLarue whilst I admit I have not read every single comment on this thread, are you really saying that posters are comparing this act of vandalism to the murder of a 15 year old? What I've seen is the grief police complaining that people are upset about this event whilst a child in Croydon has been killed on her way to school. It is them who are bringing this up isn't it? Not the people who are upset about the felling of the tree?

GPTec1 · 30/09/2023 16:34

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 29/09/2023 11:22

I'm not convinced at all that part of the trunk is missing. I understand the view that the branch seems to divert from the trunk at approx where the cut is, and that that looks too close to the ground from pics of the tree standing. But I think it's a trick of perspective.

This picture definitely looks like the 2 cut edges would fit together, minus the wedge removed to make it fall. You can see where the last little bit cracked and split off as it fell on both ends.

You can also see that originally the tree fell to the right, where the broken branches are lying, they would have hit the ground and the wall then tipped it over to the left where it lies now. You can see the stumps of the branches are a distance from the branches themselves. There is also a steep slope the other slide of the wall, so the weight of the tree would have pulled it down the slope to the lowest point and made it roll to the side until it settled. It's not been moved intentionally, it just rolled when it fell.

Yes this ^ the hinge wood, the bit that is broken & not sawn through, is same on both stump and trunk.

the tree would have "bounced" as the upper branches hit the ground, could have moved quite a bit, whoever cut it, was lucky they didn't injured (shame)

Also people are taking away bits of the tree before the 'experts' have been able to take the cuttings they want for propagation

The tree may grow back, we cut 2 large sycamores (my parents did) 50 plus years ago, as they were in danger of hitting the house, fast forward 50 years and in their place are 4 large trees which again have had to be felled and every year numerous branches spring up.
With a bit of husbandry, this one should spring up again, not the same of course but still a large tree.
