Sycamore Gap - tree has been felled!

Looks like someone has deliberately felled the famous tree in Sycamore Gap. I can’t believe anyone would do such a thing. I don’t normally get emotional but this has really upset me. It’s absolutely irreplaceable.

All this fuss about a tree. Just don't get it. Sorry.

Off you hop then. I’ll be keeping an eye out for your next thread about something you do “get” and be sure to jump on to tell you how much I just don’t get it and apologise insincerely accordingly.

Ohyoudodoyou · 28/09/2023 14:48

We can no longer have anything nice.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/09/2023 14:49

It's beyond belief. Why on earth would anyone do this? It feels as though we've lost a national treasure.

BIossomtoes · 28/09/2023 14:51

Wanton awful vandalism. That beautiful iconic tree had stood for 200 years. Shocking.

BasiliskStare · 28/09/2023 14:54

"It'll be some new money Tory landowner sick of commoners on their land. " - Err I think not or at least wait for the police to investigate

It is so sad. My initial reaction is ( once investigations done - plant a new one either beside or in place of ) & perhaps someone with an arboretum KC or others could donate a more mature tree not a sapling. & the wood from this one could be put to good use to - as a previous poster said - either benches - or make stuff to sell on behalf of the NT ( as the RN with wood from HMS Victory. )

But this vandalism & it does look like it is so so sad. I sometimes despair of people's thinking. But early doors - I shall be watching with interest to see what happened. That tree was iconic.

At least they can now count the rings on the stump to work out how old it actually was 😂

FFS 😡

CatamaranViper · 28/09/2023 14:58

The local rumour is that it is to do with a man recently evicted from his home in the area.

44PumpLane · 28/09/2023 14:58

I'm from Northumberland and like most others on this thread in absolutely gutted about this. It's has genuinely upset me this morning.

Whoever has done this is a sad and pathetic piece of shit. I wish them a huge amount of bad luck and sorrow.

AlviarinAesSedai · 28/09/2023 15:02

It’s awful. On local radio they said must have happened in the night. Got to be someone experienced, to be able to be do that in the dark.
Hope arrests are made.

Did you misinterpret that "crying with laughter" smiley for a "sad crying" one, because although your statement is correct, this isn't funny.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/09/2023 15:04

I wonder how much it would cost to put a new young sycamore in there - it wouldn’t be the same, but it would be something. I would happily kick in a few quid to replace this lovely tree.

Is anyone else thinking of the episode of The Simpsons where Bart cuts the head off the Jebediah Springfield statue for a dare, then regrets it when he realises how much the statue means to people?

No.
Because that was a kids' show on the telly.
And this is real life.

SwishSwishBisch · 28/09/2023 15:14

If there’s ever a thread where there’s a gap for someone to post something inane & obtuse, I can guarantee @Viviennemary will hop straight in. She’s MNs resident troll.

All this fuss about a tree. Just don't get it. Sorry.

Your loss.

It was 300-400 years old, a significant local landmark. People propose to one another under it, a friend scattered her dad's ashes around it, it's a much loved part of history.

If you can't value ancient trees there's something missing in you.

Hate to break it to you, but life isn't an episode of the Simpsons ffs.

Flumpaphone · 28/09/2023 15:19

So so angry about this. You can almost hear the rage howling across the North East today

Hankunamatata · 28/09/2023 15:19

It's tree of my youth. Every year we would hike to eat and eat out picnic

Yep.

Mind you, there's a few others sneering on this thread who seem desperate to belittle people for caring.

We care.

HelenFisksBrownSuit · 28/09/2023 15:25

When I saw this I felt devastated.
I hate this species - we're mindless vandals.

I'm from the South and had never seen this beautiful tree but this awful malicious act has made me cry today.

The people who say it's only a tree can just fuck right off

ChallengeAnneka · 28/09/2023 15:28

I don’t know the tree in question but I’m heartened that people on here care.

SanDimasHighSchoolFootballRules · 28/09/2023 15:29

I'm not from Northumberland or anywhere near but I'm gutted to read this today.

Why would someone do this? It's just so fucking pointless.

I'm sick of utter bellends wantonly destroying things just because they can (also looking at the bastards that set fire to, then bulldozed, the Crooked House pub)

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 28/09/2023 15:30

It was not 34 years old.

Here's a picture of the 34 year old one being planted (it's the small stick next to the person). The large, original, tree is clearly the one that has been cut down. It has the same distinctive branch structure as recent photos of the tree in the gap.

I've found a local business web page that mentions the 1989 tree. According to them, sheep probably ate it.
