Cryptic pregnancy, positive test at 5 months

Im sure I’m being silly but I’m terrified, shaking and crying and need some reassurance. I last had sex 5 months ago, I’ve had periods ever since albeit a little later than usual but still every month.
this month I’m 10 days late so brought a PG test on a whim and this came up immediately although as it’s so faint I’m thinking it can’t be a positive as surely if I was five months it would be darker?

Hcg goes down after 12 weeks so you could be. We can't tell you. Only a doctor can.

CanvaQueen · 25/09/2023 12:10

GP for a blood test, urgently… Any other symptoms?

KimberleyClark · 25/09/2023 12:12

How old are you? Could you be perimenopausal?

PrettyPleaseXo · 25/09/2023 12:12

I’ve called the doctors the receptionist basically thought I was mad and told me to keep taking tests as it couldn’t be positive. I’ve gained weight but I thought I was just getting fat and I’ve had gas bubbles but again I have IBS so haven’t thought much of it

Keep calling, you need a blood test. Also try the local maternity unit.

If you’d want an abortion, you’re cutting it very fine so time is of the essence.

Summer2424 · 25/09/2023 12:15

Hi @PrettyPleaseXo
Try taking a Clearblue digital test hun xx

PrettyPleaseXo · 25/09/2023 12:15

Thanks everyone I’m going to go into town now and get a clear blue I’ll keep you all updated. My auntie had early menopause so it could be that. I’ll get this test and then come back x

You need to see a Dr. I was 12 weeks with DD and the GP diagnosed me by palpating my abdomen.
Don't let the receptionist say no, just say you have women's problems and you're too embarrassed to tell her what it is.

CanvaQueen · 25/09/2023 12:18

As PP said, HCG levels decrease once you’re past about 12 weeks. Perimenopause won’t give you positive tests.

You need a diagnostic blood test and a scan really.

TGGreen · 25/09/2023 12:18

DM found out she was pregnant with her fifth child on the first of March (I've changed the month), I was born on the 17th...

Caro678 · 25/09/2023 12:19

You need to call back and insist on an appointment with the GP. Don’t go
into details with the receptionist. You can just tell her it is private if she is going to be difficult. There is no such thing as a false positive on a pregnancy test so you absolutely need a scan ASAP.

Minfilia · 25/09/2023 12:21

Is that just an evaporation line on a cheap test? It doesn’t look like an obvious positive to me.

Maybe you do need a blood test but I wouldn’t be panicking yet…

CallieTR · 25/09/2023 12:23

Whilst pregnancy is the most obvious reason, there can be other medical causes for a positive pregnancy test without a pregnancy - you should insist on a GP appointment straight away.

FourStringsNoWaiting · 25/09/2023 12:36

That could be positive although we can't give you a definitive answer based on just a photo, you need proper medical advice

I know a health visitor who did a new birth visit for someone who didn't know she was pregnant until she gave birth on the toilet at full term. While it's not common, cryptic pregnancy does happen so it's best to be absolutely sure

I hope you get the outcome you want

PrettyPleaseXo · 25/09/2023 12:50

Not pregnant on a CB digital but after reading that HGC can decrease I don’t know what to think. Im going to book an appt with the doctors and get a blood test. The line on the other test came up before the control line came up so it definitely wasn’t an evap

There is something called the “hook effect” that makes positives look faint after the hormone levels have peaked… dilute your wee with water and take another test. See what that’s like.

CanvaQueen · 25/09/2023 12:54

What’s your situation OP? Abortion is only usually allowed up to 24 weeks and pregnancy’s usually counted as starting two weeks before ovulation. So if you’re not sure if you’d be keeping a baby you really need to push for the blood test and scan immediately as you may already be very close to or over 24 weeks. If you’d be keeping the baby this is less of a concern.

Good luck with the doctors.

beeswaxinc · 25/09/2023 12:58

I have been 10 days late before without being pregnant (was TTC so am sure of how many days) and while annoying it does happen.

I would say that if you have been having fairly regular periods you are highly unlikely to be pregnant at all, let alone 5 months.

If a CB Digital is saying not pregnant, I really think the line you have on the pregnancy test is an evap line.

Saying all this, my mum didn't know she was pregnant with her first until 4 months as she had breakthrough bleeding every month til then!

toomanyleggings · 25/09/2023 13:02

at 12 week I needed the tiniest drop of urine with a full glass of water to turn a pregnancy test positive. It’s possible you wouldn’t be able to get a clear result on a pregnancy test at all if you’re 5 months. You’d need to do a blood test. Was the sex unprotected?

Yes. I think you're panicking about nothing OP.

maddening · 25/09/2023 13:06

Love how the receptionist thinks she is qualified to give medical advice 🙄

Paintingonthewall12 · 25/09/2023 13:14

I had a false positive once and then there was a need article about a faulty batch. It does happen occasionally but not often.

Drfosters · 25/09/2023 13:15

It could be an ovarian cyst which is also causing the bloating. Honestly a blood test and an ultrasound is the only thing that can tell what it is. I would go to A&E and get a scan. I did that when I had sudden pains in my ovary and it ended up being a chemical pregnancy.
