Cryptic pregnancy, positive test at 5 months

Im sure I’m being silly but I’m terrified, shaking and crying and need some reassurance. I last had sex 5 months ago, I’ve had periods ever since albeit a little later than usual but still every month.
this month I’m 10 days late so brought a PG test on a whim and this came up immediately although as it’s so faint I’m thinking it can’t be a positive as surely if I was five months it would be darker?

Update - I came on my period very short 4 day bleed then stopped for 24 hours completely and then started bleeding again. This is a test from today. I went to the GP who said couldn’t confirm or deny pregnancy from feeling my stomach and has booked me in for HCG and FSH blood tests xx

That looks like a faint positive. Hopefully the blood tests will provide answers though.

Was there any suggestion of you being booked in for an ultrasound, depending on the results of the bloods?

PrettyPleaseXo · 02/10/2023 10:25

This is what I’m hoping for lovely and there was no talk of an ultrasound but I wish she would have just done that immediately alongside the blood test you know? I just need answers

Can you afford a private scan?

PrettyPleaseXo · 02/10/2023 10:35

I can’t afford a private scan at the moment I’ve just had two kids birthdays aha I’m just really confused as to why she couldn’t confirm or deny after feeling my tummy. I am overweight but surely by 6 months youd feel a uterus? And baby?

YellowHatt · 02/10/2023 10:38

I don’t know how you haven’t booked a scan yet, I couldn’t wait if it was me.

And you say they’ve booked bloods? So haven’t actually done them yet? How long are you having to wait for those? My GP offers booked appointments but you can also ask for the form and book your own appointment at the local hospital (which is much faster). If your wait is long you could see if they do that?

YellowHatt · 02/10/2023 10:39

Sorry Xpost, I see what you mean about paying for a scan, they can be expensive.

PrettyPleaseXo · 02/10/2023 10:40

My local hospital only do booked appointments for bloods I’ve just checked. I’ve left a message and keep ringing hoping to get through to someone but I might take myself up there and hope for the best

Tbh I would present at a&e

uncomfortablydumb53 · 02/10/2023 11:11

How frustrating You just need to know!
Have they actually examined you
The uterus would be above your pelvis now?
I never normally say this but could you go to A&E and say you're cramping?

She felt my stomach and said she couldn’t conclude either way as I am quite overweight I did think the same as you however and thought surely you’d feel either way?! I’m at work 9-5 all week so haven’t got time to go to A&E but I can’t say im not tempted

If you are carrying a lot of extra weight round your abdomen, it possibly could still be hard to be certain from palpation. You can get scans done very cheaply now. I would scrape together the money somehow to be honest, even if it meant selling something.

To be honest, I think it is very unlikely that you are pregnant, but you need a full medical check to confirm either way and to ensure that there is nothing else going on.

NCforthispostonlytoday · 02/10/2023 11:30

Don’t go to AE . Maybe call epu.

She possibly thinks you could have got your dates wrong, therefore she can't rule out an earlier stage pregnancy.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 02/10/2023 11:42

I agree with others that it could be the hook effect. This is 100% a thing and I tested it out when pregnant with DD2.

CanvaQueen · 02/10/2023 11:44

Private scans are £70. If you can’t afford that, how are you going to afford another baby?

You need to take the time off work (this is a medical issue - either you’re pushing six months’ pregnancy with no antenatal care, or you have a very rare medical issue that needs attention.

This. 100%.

Robotik · 02/10/2023 11:49

Try diluting your urine 50/50 with water and testing with a normal pregnancy test

this is something called the hook effect.

Honeybee798 · 02/10/2023 11:50

Would you be able to ring up the local midwifery team or antenatal clinic instead and see if they could help at all? Can usually find numbers online. They’d probably want to see you sooner than later if you are pregnant as you’re possibly quite far along and haven’t had any antenatal care. No other real advice other than I hope you get whatever outcome you’re looking for here x

She hasn't indicated what her intentions would be either way. Don't be so damned rude. Her finances at this specific moment are nothing to do with you.

Agree 100%, this was rude and completely unnecessary!

And this is helpful how?

Niinja · 02/10/2023 12:00

Hopefully you'll be able to get that blood test in quickly - definitely worth pushing for that asap. I would expect it to come through quicker than a private scan would, but I guess it depends on what the queues are like this week.

I know it's really worrying but if anything I would be spending on folic acid and a multivitamin rather than a private scan.

TeaAndCock · 02/10/2023 12:19

It’s likely a dodgy batch of tests, I wouldn’t have believed that to be possible until happened to me, definite line there on two cheap eBay tests but negative on clear blue digital, my second child was only a few months old and I was seriously panicking!

Cosycardigans · 02/10/2023 12:30

When I was pregnant I was in another country and it was a long wait between appointments, so I used to take myself off to their a&e every few months and said I was having cramps so they would scan me. They would always make me do a pregnancy test first. The longer my pregnancy went on, the fainter they got. The docs said it was because the more HCG you have in you, the harder it is to detect on those tests.
