Cryptic pregnancy, positive test at 5 months

Im sure I’m being silly but I’m terrified, shaking and crying and need some reassurance. I last had sex 5 months ago, I’ve had periods ever since albeit a little later than usual but still every month.
this month I’m 10 days late so brought a PG test on a whim and this came up immediately although as it’s so faint I’m thinking it can’t be a positive as surely if I was five months it would be darker?

That’s a negative test, and if you were six months pregnant there would definitely be something to feel (and you would feel fetal movements as well).

She’s sending you for bloods and a scan in case you have your dates wrong, but I do agree that if you haven’t had sex for six months, you are probably worrying over nothing.

PrettyPleaseXo · 02/10/2023 12:39

Just to clarify this would not be a planned pregnancy. I used contraception when I last had sex so comments regarding my finances are completely uncalled for.

thabks to everyone else I will keep calling till I get an appt xx

Can you ask to speak to a midwife at your surgery? Or call... I don't know, midwife led unit, early pregnancy unit or minor ailments and ask for more advice? A family planning clinic? Is the Brook Advisory still about?

If you are considering your options re: pregnancy then if you are pregnant then the more info you have available is essential.

I really feel for you, the not having answers is difficult.

Tinysoxxx · 02/10/2023 13:08

Some things like some types of ovarium cysts can cause HCG levels to rise, also kidney problems. So worth asking for these to be checked if pregnancy is ruled out.

When I was pregnant I was in another country and it was a long wait between appointments, so I used to take myself off to their a&e every few months and said I was having cramps so they would scan me. They would always make me do a pregnancy test first. The longer my pregnancy went on, the fainter they got. The docs said it was because the more HCG you have in you, the harder it is to detect on those tests.

That's disgusting.

She hasn't indicated what her intentions would be either way. Don't be so damned rude. Her finances at this specific moment are nothing to do with you.

None of its anything to do with any of us, that’s the joy of online message boards.

OP last had sex 5-6 months ago, so with every day that passes she’s closer to being beyond having abortion as an option. As she doesn’t appear to be in a relationship, has at least two children already and is in financial difficulties, that’d be the route many people would take.

She could be carrying a baby with genetic abnormalities that mean it won’t live beyond birth, or one that needs medical intervention pre-birth to survive. She could have some kind of medical issue that requires urgent intervention for her own health, because positive pregnancy tests are vanishingly rare for people who aren’t pregnant.

It’s not a situation to sit around waiting about.

Changeychang · 02/10/2023 13:47

Hope you don't have to wait too long OP and things turn out in your favour.

satellitesunshine · 02/10/2023 13:57

i think you should consider going to a&e or calling your local maternity unit and seeing if they can help?

Do NOT go to A& E becuase you think you might be pregnant despite having periods and negative tests and not having had sex in 6 months.
This is terrible advise. And the maternity unit is for people with confirmed pregnancies.

It is extremely unlikely that OP is pregnant.

BatteryPoweredMammy · 02/10/2023 14:28

@whatnot929

Eh? Don’t be ridiculous. Of course she can go to her local Maternity unit.

She had a positive pregnancy test initially so she should go as a matter of urgency and have a scan and get it checked out.

The most recent test? There’s a line though?

And did I miss where she’s being sent for a scan. I thought it was just bloods, no scan.

She had most likely a faulty test and multiple negatives. The maternity unit takes booked in pregnant women, not people who wander in thinking they may be pregnant against all signs to the contrary!

That's disgusting.

It really is. Lying and taking up precious time and resources in an A&E department? Unbelieveable.

PrettyPleaseXo · 02/10/2023 15:53

Just an update I’ve got blood test booked in for Thursday to check HCG and FSH encase perimenopausal x

Except Maternity Units/EPU also take women who have miscarried i.e. not pregnant, to check everything has completed and for other follow up concerns. I was one of those 'all signs to the contrary' women you refer to, because of miscarriage.

Tbh I would present at a&e

Why?

I had a line like that about 2 years ago. I was on the pill and doing the opposite of trying. It was a dodgy test.

Niinja · 02/10/2023 16:20

Good OP. A bit further away than you'd hope but IIRC the results tend to come through quickly.

The women who miscarried were booked in pregnant women, with positive pregnancy tests.
You were absolutely not one of the women I referred to, and neither was I the five times I was there for the same reason.

EPU is EARLY pregnancy unit, so not appropriate anyway. Maternity unit is for pregnant women who have been booked on to the maternity service. Neither is suitable for OP.

@MeinKraft yeah bang on!

Bananabreadandstrawberries · 02/10/2023 17:42

Good luck with everything OP!

However!!! Please do not go to A&E. Please save that for accidents and emergencies.

Bananabreadandstrawberries · 02/10/2023 17:49

Terrible advice!
Do not go to A&E!

This is why people with real emergencies are stuck waiting for 10 hours!
One day this could be you or your family member.
