What with his random shite this week about scrapping a non-existent meat tax and an imaginary 7 bins, actually scrapping his own home insulation workforce that was only set up a few months ago, scrapping any useful bits of HS2 and now scrapping A-levels (which is so far removed from what is actually possible in schools right now that it's not even funny), what the fuck is he on?

He's just flailing around madly scrapping everything in case someone, somewhere might vote Tory over it.

And he was supposed to be the sensible replacement to Liz Truss.

Remember those 40 hospitals....

The Transport Secretary Mark Harper asked why a series of commitments made by Rishi Sunak last week to build new transport projects around the country have now been deleted, says they were merely "examples" of the "sorts of things that that money could be spent on"

Sunak is a liar. No one has been able to prove his much vaunted (by him) integrity, because he hasn't any.

43ontherocksporfavor · 08/10/2023 12:51

Sunak was one of those fined for parties don’t forget!
No 10 was the most fined address during the lockdown.
What a joke!

I'm told that is because he doesn't know what a party is.

I love that idiot saying that der Yoof should vote Conservative because the Labour party are not promising to wrestle control of the economic situation we are in. Who does he think caused that situation, FFS?

Labour, of course.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/10/2023 13:57

@ilovesooty ha, it's all headline circle jerks - and yet naive people think it's gospel

LumiB · 08/10/2023 14:06

Well if there was a meat tax on the table to be implemented its good that its been stopped cos why are taxing meat which is good food to eat better than junk!

if there was something in the works to introduce 7 bins then thank fuck its been stopped too. Wtaf 7 bins! Ridiculous

As for HS2 when Labour wanted it everyone I know was moaning how its a waste money and the North esp on here were moaning they don't need it but want better links between northern towns like Leeds to Manchester etc.

So now he has scrapped what ppl were moaning about and saying its better to spend the mo ey on better links between northern towns the moaning starts again.

Cant win either way can he.

I quite a agree. Far better to tax the junk that Macdonalds serves rather than taxing meat.

If there a meat tax about to implemented, that would be the responsibility of the government.
If there was a proposal for 7 bins, then that would be the responsibility of the government.
I think it is probably also the responsibility of the government what it spends taxpayers money on.

So you seem to be saying that you are happy that Sunak has scrapped some policies that his government were responsible for. Hardly a ringing endorsement of them is is?

BIossomtoes · 08/10/2023 14:41

And they had the audacity to sell flip flops with Starmer’s face on them at their conference.

You do know there are think tanks and organisations who lobby the government or MPs with their recommendations to be considered as policies to introduce

"Meat and flight taxes are not Conservative proposals, with the party instead clarifying they were recommendations from the Climate Change Committee, an independent body with no power to pass laws."

All im am saying is if they were being considered its a good thing its been shutdown.

So you are saying it is a good job the government isn't introducing something that wasn't government policy.

My understanding of how government works is limited, but I thought it was perfectly normal for the government only to introduce laws that were in line with government policy.

L1ttledrummergirl · 08/10/2023 18:32

Wtf, is this double speak, treble speak or quadruple?

I've lost track given how much the truth is being bent, twisted, ignored by this joke of a government.

I think I've worked it out.

Truss listened to Tufton street and took all her policies from there, and look where that got us, so Sunak is saying to us that he isn't going to use Tufton Street anymore and instead will do his very best to sure that his inlaws and their pals benefit from his government instead.

Turns out Sunak was lying about the investment in new transport routes in the North. What a surprise.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-67018666

The thing is, Sunak himself didn't decide to mention the Airport tram link (which happened years ago). His advisers and senior civil servants would have given him a list of such projects to mention in his speed. So, what are incompetent advisors and civil servants doing here? Are they deliberately trying to sabotage him?

This kind of thing happens time and time again. We all know prime ministers and senior ministers don't come up with all these things themselves - they've got advisors and a civil service department to suggest options etc. So why are they so incompetent?

We saw it with covid support. I'm the first to blame Sunak for the 3 million excluded fiasco, but let's be realistic, he didn't write the plans himself, did he? Yes, he lied about them and misled Parliament when he knew they were a fiasco, but people behind the scenes came up with the detail of the flawed proposals.

Same with successive tax cock ups. Brown didn't plan tax credits entirely by himself in a darkened room one night - they detail would have been drawn up by his civil servants and advisers, who, again, were shown to be incompetent. Same with the child benefit claw back tax, history keeps repeating itself with this kind of cock up.

Just how are the advisors and senior civil servants recruited? Are they truly the best they can get? Or are they on the fiddle, taking back handers to cause mistakes and embarrassment??

Fightyouforthatpie · 09/10/2023 10:21

I dunno about anything else - but the 3 million excluded from Financial support is part of deliberate policy HMRC/Treasury has been following for some time to eliminate IT contractors due to a misguided view from a couple of academics and their pals that such people were nasty tax dodgers and more tax could be got from them. In fact, of course, the work just gets sent overseas to companies like Infosys.
Win win for Rishi (well his wife).

The competent ones were all sacked or resigned for being competent.

A competent advisor would never have allowed Boris Brexit to happen.

Crikeyalmighty · 09/10/2023 10:29

@Fightyouforthatpie never forget that Cummings said that 'we need more weirdos and misfits' he certainly got them, !!! People like Coffey and Gullis would never get on in real life apart from maybe at a particularly crap local council

Yes, I know about IR35, which has been a running battle ever since Brown botched it's introduction. I'm an accountant.

But the excluded group included a lot more types of cases, not just one man limited companies. Literally any kind of freelancer/self employed could have found themselves excluded at a whim just based on their circumstances at the time, i.e. the 50:50 rule, the £50k rule, starting s/e in 19/20 tax year, etc etc. It wasn't just IT contractors.

It's said that Brown sacked a lot of his Treasury advisors and civil servants - perhaps they were the ones who tried to warn him about his disastrous ideas, so he got rid and recruited a load of bum lickers instead?

Ah, yes. I remember how millions of IT professionals were going to emigrate and leave the UK high and dry because of it.

Many did. I've still got numerous IT contractor clients who now live abroad, but are continuing to work for the same firms they worked for when they used to live in the UK. Obviously, now they just pay their taxes in other countries rather than to HMRC. That's the problem with the "portable" workforce who can work from home - they can base themselves where they wish. IR35 doesn't apply to people who are resident for tax in other countries!

I guess this is where YMMV cuts in 😀

I don't know any. Well, that actually did. It was all a bit Phil Collins with them threatening to leave and then being here 2 years later.

I have no doubt some people did leave - for a variety of reasons. However over time I've noticed people (myself at times) are so much happier to whine than act. Hence the popularity of religion, Mumsnet, and the Daily Telegraph letters page.
