Dogs slobbering on products in shops

PurpIish · 23/09/2023 17:21

I know I'm not being unreasonable! But surely some think I am as they allow their dogs to do this.

Took DD(7) shopping today, trip was really spoiled by a few dogs.

Lush. Someone brought their large dog in, this dog was head height to the lower shelves, and had its snout in several of the products. I was about to complain to the staff, but several staff went over and started petting the dog, clearly they were team dog. I don't want my clean bath products with added dog slobber, nor do I want them handled by someone who has just been touching dogs. I will email lush to tell them, but I am posting to please ask dog people to resist taking your dogs into stores where they are going to have their noses in the products.

Next was at the little pop up market. Another dog, in owner's arms, sneezed on the wares (hand-knitted toys). Obviously sneezing happens, but come on, that's just gross.

Third, today, mid-to-large sized dog, cocked his leg on someone's stall. Owner wasn't even watching. Stall -holder has to pack up her table, with dog piss on the table leg. I did tell the owner, of the stall, she was really pissed off, and lamented that it has happened before, but because she's positioned in the outdoor market area, she has no control over people bringing their dogs right up to her stall.

Fourth. Woman had her dog on a long leash. Elderly chap tripped over the leash. Luckily he didn't land on the ground, it was busy so he just half -fell on someone as he stumbled, but he was shaken, and the person he landed on was hurt too. Dread to think how the old man would be doing had he completely fallen on the ground.

Fifth, there was a dog shit in the middle of the outdoor market.

This is all in one day. We were only out for about three hours.

Please please stop bringing dogs everywhere. And if you absolutely must, please watch them vigilantly so that the rest of us aren't impacted by them.

Yanbu - dogs should stay at home, or go to the park. They should not be in the shops.

Yabu. Dogs are still great, better than humans, and comparable to kids.

@PurpIish seems very far fetched, busy Saturday or not!

Totally doesn’t sound fake to me! Come to Herne Hill farmers’ market on a Sunday, every second family has a dog with them, and yep you definitely see them pissing on things, shitting and the owners pretending not to have noticed, and many owners keep their dog on a stupid long lead despite it being a crowded market, so they get tangled up with people walking in the opposite direction. Of course half the rest of the owners don’t have their dog on a leash at all, so they are running free and sniffing everything/getting under people’s feet that way, so it’s swings and roundabouts.

As a proportion of owners, it is probably only 10%, but if there are 50 dogs there over the course of a few hours, that is five dogs misbehaving/not under control.

Sailawaytocromer · 24/09/2023 18:05

I quite like a few dogs but am not a “love all dogs” person. I have seen most of what the OP described. Also south east, busy area.

I have also found some of the posts here by sensible dog owners really helpful.

One of my best friends has a dog (no children) and the dog is treated as carefully as a child. Which is fine. But it’s awkward when she comes to my house and I have to explain that no, her dog can’t come too. We have a cat so I use that as an excuse but actually, I just don’t want dog smell in my house. I’ve never understood why the dog can’t stay at home with his “daddy” or alone for an hour or two. Everything is about putting his needs first. It’s just a bit irritating and I actually don’t really like her dog as a result.

The dogs I am fond of fit in with family life rather than have life revolve around them.

Im 100% against dogs being in shops or restaurants. No problem with them being in pub gardens etc if they’re well behaved.

Exactly so. There were lots of dogs. I've only highlighted the issues around the ones that I found unacceptable in public life. And really, it's not them. They are just dogs. It's obviously the owners I object to.

A dog pissing up that stall table leg is revolting, especially because disassembling it requires close human contact, absolutely revolting to allow this. I would not be happy!!!

I've also witnessed some kids letting their dog piss up the guy ropes and side of someone's tent. We were all leaving that day. Sadly I could not find the tent owners to tell them. So so gross.

@PurpIish anymore examples of bad dog behaviour..... surely you just have more!

🙄

I must live in a south london/Surrey border a long way from you...

You come across as a dog-person with low standards. So of course you won’t register these incidents happening because in your eyes they are acceptable.

You can keep screeching that these incidents didn’t happen, but most decent people are intelligent and aware enough to know that there has been a huge increase in poor dog management since the pandemic. Pretending others are making it up won’t make the issue go away.

@NoodlesAndRice I'm not screeching, I couldn't be heard above my dog barking!

CoolerWeather · 24/09/2023 20:02

Did you go to the beach/park afterwards and get knocked over by a dog who then stole your ice cream?

Sigh. Say it didn’t happen on one day. Say each incident happened on separate days. Does that make them all acceptable?

You are focussing on the wrong issue here.

I really don’t know why bad dog-owners like you, defend these incidents either by saying kids are worse, or by pretending that others are making it up. Your type of owner does anything other than addressing the gross behaviour. So it continues.

You need to learn something from the decent dog-owners posting on this thread.

Yanbu. I have dogs, I love dogs, but I'm fucking sick of having to accommodate other people's shitty dogs, everywhere we go! Couldn't get a seat at an outdoor farm event last week... why? Because DOGS were taking up spaces, sitting at the tables, literally on the seats, like people. My (paying) children had to stand, because dogs were using the seats. Couldn't buy the jacket I wanted in John Lewis, as the only one in my size was covered (and I mean covered) in dog fur! And when I'm paying £100+ for something, I don't want to have to get it cleaned before I can wear it. My daughter got bowled over by a woman who had no control over her dog at a farm shop today. The woman was antagonising the dog by saying in a really high pitched voice "shall we go see the duckies?!" Over and over on repeat, whilst basically snogging it's face off, it then lunged off on the lead, and the woman got flung around, and smacked straight into my 8 year old. Dogs in places they shouldn't be, like the ZOO really wound me up the other week. The captive animals looked shit scared of these panting drooling dogs, leaning into their enclosures, clearly wanting to rip them to pieces. A dog actually bowled over the side of the red panda enclosure, and had to get lifted up and out by it's lead. If they'd let go, I'm sure it would have killed it. The panda didn't come down from the tree the entire time we were there afterwards, looked petrified. Just leave them at home for god's sake. And stop talking to them like they're human children, it's fucking embarrassing.

I personally can't stand children with dirty, sticky fingers touching things in shops. Each to their own, I suppose.

If one thing on this forum is going to end up giving me a fucking aneurysm, it's people comparing dogs to kids on every single dog thread.

How hard is it to spot the fucking difference between a dog and a child.
I'm off to headbutt a sodding wall 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️

paintityellow · 24/09/2023 20:44

So many dog owners in denial. 'This didn't happen'.... 'that didn't happen...' 'my dog's perfect'...... 'You're all just dog haters'.... 'the Mn poll isn't representative' 'Everyone's dramatising'...... etc etc etc etc
No doubt if stricter laws have to be introduced they will be whining about the 'nanny state'.
No ability to realise their lack of responsibility and awareness is the reasons rules have to be laid down.

This... it's truly incomprehensible how people can fail to see the difference between a child... a small, young HUMAN being, and Fido the annoying as shit labradoodle, that's just taken a piss up the side of your tent. Yeah let's lock all our kids at home and release them out into the big wide world when they're 18, with no social skills and a serious case of fucking rickets. Fwiw, my kids have never pissed/licked/shat/moulted fur on anyone's stuff.

It's literally the ONLY thing they can think of saying when trying to defend their case.
It's wafer thin.

Oh come on..... so many dog haters soaking up all these happenings in one busy Saturday afternoon! Come to mine next Saturday, which is a south london/Surrey border, we will see how many of there's incidents actually happen....

Lahdedahiam · 24/09/2023 21:02

@paintityellow I'll guess I get no takers...

DiaNaranja · 24/09/2023 21:04

I need to add a story from another incident at a farmers market, which makes me laugh and cry in equal measures whenever I recall it... I saw a woman carrying her small dog around, that had clearly got bored and demanded to come out of his stroller (don't even get me started on that) she was obviously unaware that while holding him, she had her fingers literally placed directed on said dogs rectum, one finger may have even slid dangerously close to going inside at one point, dog looked most uncomfortable, and she stood there for a good few mins basically (and I'm assuming unaware) massaging his asshole with her digits... she then swapped hands, as little Mr Puggywinkle was getting a bit heavy, and picked up a cheese sample with the offending anus fingers and popped it straight into her mouth. I fucking gagged. Of course she had to offer a sample to Mr P, and even he turned his nose up, (probably knowing where those fingers had just been). Obviously this caused roars of laughter and jokes about how Mr P is such a fussy little so and so... give me a fucking break, he doesn't want to sample his own shite like you just did mate.

Jesus how disgusting is that comment, whilst others have real worries that cause stress and others have medical reasons for aneurysm's!

Shame on you!!

Lahdedahiam · 24/09/2023 21:08

@DiaNaranja and you think it's going to cause people to have an aneurysm?

Do you actually know what it is?

I happy with all the comments I've made.

But do you ever say anything except to generalise and stir?
