Dogs slobbering on products in shops

PurpIish · 23/09/2023 17:21

I know I'm not being unreasonable! But surely some think I am as they allow their dogs to do this.

Took DD(7) shopping today, trip was really spoiled by a few dogs.

Lush. Someone brought their large dog in, this dog was head height to the lower shelves, and had its snout in several of the products. I was about to complain to the staff, but several staff went over and started petting the dog, clearly they were team dog. I don't want my clean bath products with added dog slobber, nor do I want them handled by someone who has just been touching dogs. I will email lush to tell them, but I am posting to please ask dog people to resist taking your dogs into stores where they are going to have their noses in the products.

Next was at the little pop up market. Another dog, in owner's arms, sneezed on the wares (hand-knitted toys). Obviously sneezing happens, but come on, that's just gross.

Third, today, mid-to-large sized dog, cocked his leg on someone's stall. Owner wasn't even watching. Stall -holder has to pack up her table, with dog piss on the table leg. I did tell the owner, of the stall, she was really pissed off, and lamented that it has happened before, but because she's positioned in the outdoor market area, she has no control over people bringing their dogs right up to her stall.

Fourth. Woman had her dog on a long leash. Elderly chap tripped over the leash. Luckily he didn't land on the ground, it was busy so he just half -fell on someone as he stumbled, but he was shaken, and the person he landed on was hurt too. Dread to think how the old man would be doing had he completely fallen on the ground.

Fifth, there was a dog shit in the middle of the outdoor market.

This is all in one day. We were only out for about three hours.

Please please stop bringing dogs everywhere. And if you absolutely must, please watch them vigilantly so that the rest of us aren't impacted by them.

Yanbu - dogs should stay at home, or go to the park. They should not be in the shops.

Yabu. Dogs are still great, better than humans, and comparable to kids.

The denial of dog owners on threads like these is interesting. Instead of taking on board comments, or realising that the prevalence of these threads and the huge support for the OPs means that there is a majority of people out there who don't want dogs everywhere, they decide to berate these people as 'dog haters' and tut tut at 'yet another thread' on the issue.

There are different versions of this thread though.

I totally take issue with the "dog owners ARE this" and "dog owners ARE that" type of OP.
They 🐕are doing this or They 🦮are doing that, full of sweeping generalisations.

I saw a thread where apparently EVERY SINGLE cafe, restaurant and pub, in a County choc a bloc with them, was definately being coerced and pushed by hoards of bullying dog lovers into becoming 'dog friendly ' against their will. And all the beaches.

This is very specific and imho very sensible OP.

Not in denial, said I've got dogs and they don't go everywhere.

Some dog people don’t really have reading comprehension skills.

The piss situation was in the OP. Have a read. I have not seen it myself but believe others. As I have said on this thread already.

And some problem can’t help but live in ‘cesspits’. Not everyone is wealthy you see. Or able to move easily.

Anyway give the thread another read, slowly and see if you understand better.

Ah, ok, so you're asking me to read something that you haven't read yourself, as you couldn't be arsed, but expect me to be.......?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/09/2023 22:15

Those owners are surely too stupid to look after any creature more complex than a headlouse

Thr headlice on my dd were crafty clever little bastards😭

Sorry it doesn't mean "there is a majority" of anything.

It means it's a contentious issue on MN. It's a massive fail to think MN is the same as "out there."

And I don't think even dog owners want dogs " everywhere."

A good bit in my opinion. But that seems to happen with all threads expressing concern or annoyance about dogs being allowed everywhere. The OP is accused of being hysterical, a dog hater, making things up etc. As I said, denial by some dog owners.

Very little in this thread. I'd say folk are largely in agreement.

Has anyone said " dog hater" ? One poster?

This is actually the kind of generalising that is so divisive.

sunglassesonthetable · 23/09/2023 22:27

Yes but posters come on saying 'oh not another one of these threads' etc instead of realising the reason there are so many threads is because it has become such an issue, not because a load of posters have suddenly decided to start anti dog threads. It hasn't been as bad on this thread as on some others, but there are still the 'well I don't like kids doing this that and the other', 'only people who dislike dogs would make up this kind of stuff'...... and so on. When are they going to realise that most people do not feel dogs should be welcomed everywhere?

YeOldeGreyhound · 23/09/2023 22:35

Your voting options suck. I don't think dogs should only be allowed in their own homes or in parks, and I also don't think dogs are better than humans.

If a market was outdoors, then you can't really complain about people having dogs with them. And to complain about a dog sneezing is just bizarre. The owner wont have known it was going to happen. And I can guarantee that humans will have also sneezed and coughed over them too. What exactly are you worried about when a dog sneezes? Did the Covid pandemic make you particularly anxious?

Yeah, someone leaving a dog shit in the middle of an outdoor market is gross.

The old trap tripping over a lead was an accident. Hell, I can trip over a matchstick. If it was an extendable lead, then owner should have kept it short in a crowded area. Lots of people use them, but lots don't use them properly.

The Lush shop thing.... are you aware how many people also pick up and sniff the products in Lush? I have taken my dog into Lush once (it was during their greyhound racing campaign, and I took my greyhound to the local store). I can't get worked up about a dog sniffing something that is going to dissolve in a bath with your unwashed body anyway. And lots of unwashed hands will have handles the products too.

Flickersy · 23/09/2023 21:35

Well for a start, rabies is not extant in the UK. So your list starts off rather badly.

Secondly, could you explain why you think guide dogs are magically excluded from the others? Bearing in mind there aren't vaccines for things like norovirus and humans are a much larger vector for norovirus than dogs.

And given that guide dogs are not excluded from e.g. norovirus, then they are just as disgusting as any other dog in your eyes. No?

Edited

I included the full list as I assumed everyone would recognise that rabies is currently a controlled disease in the UK. The increase in smuggled dogs to feed the ever hungry British pet trade is a constant threat though.

Yes I thought you would recognise norovirus as a bacteria also spread by humans. Parents are well aware of the 48 hour quarantine rule with norovirus - dog owners rarely stick to this if thier dog has vomited - thus it is a bigger spread risk.

Guide dogs account for only 4/5000 of the 12 million dogs in the UK. Even if the number of guide dogs quadrupled this is a minor in comparison. Guide dogs are highly trained and are also vital to people whilst there is no equivalent alternative.

Stopping the vast majority of pet (not guide) dogs from entering premises serving food would lower the risk of zoonotic disease.

Fact.

Buildingthefuture · 23/09/2023 22:41

@paintityellow if, everywhere you go, there are people with dogs, perhaps you need to realise that most people DO want that? Not on this thread ( or most of mn 🤣) I grant you. But, if dogs really are as prevalent as people on this thread claim (that is not my experience, I have to say, and I love dogs) but soooo many people shrieking that they are “everywhere”? Well, these dogs haven’t gone to the shops/supermarket/restaurant etc alone, they’ve all been taken by people who presumably want them there? Which puts you in the minority…..

sunglassesonthetable · 23/09/2023 22:42

Who's "They"?

You piled on here making generalisations. ...dog haters... etc
And basically stirring it up and being devise.
Massively over egging any stupid comments by randoms.

You're also referencing a 'majority' , simply not true. You don't know that from MN.

Granted there seem to loads more dogs since the Covid and so lots more stupid dog owners as expected but dealing in silly decisive generalisations doesn't help anyone.

MadeUpThings · 23/09/2023 22:44

Wow, all those things in one shopping trip. Unbelievable.

I can't imagine I'd notice if I was out shopping with my kids, I'd be too busy getting on with my day,

Very true!

I am willing to bet there were actually more dogs and their owners, but OP didn't notice them as they were well behaved.
It is the same when people complain about cyclists. You only notice the bad ones (and I don't think a small dog sneezing should even warrant any headspace, let alone a thread about it).

Buildingthefuture · 23/09/2023 21:35

@Moonwatcher1234 can you read? If so, read my previous response to that question. It’s really rather relevant.

Yeah, whatever. You shouldn’t be bringing your dog into a restaurant - so unhygienic and unfair on dog and other diners.

If the restuarant owner allows it, then the dog owner does nothing wrong by taking their dog.

MadeUpThings · 23/09/2023 23:01

Exactly.

Take it up with the shops/restaurants if you like. Our friends allow dogs in their cafe and their profits went up after they did, presumable z lot of places have found that which is why they allow dogs. Therefore you won't change it and it's tough.

i didn’t say it was illegal. It is, however, completely inconsiderate and selfish. Most would agree. I like dogs but to have them in restaurants is ridiculous.

CantThinkOfANewUsernameAgain · 23/09/2023 23:03

I hate dogs in shops and cafes.
I hate dogs coming up to me. Its not a fear etc. I just don't like it.
