Double Yolkers

I am a lover of eggs, and have a boiled egg with toast soldiers every day for breakfast.

I buy eggs from various sources, often from a local farm.

As a child, I can clearly remember it being a real treat to get a double yolker.

I have not had one for years and years.

Has anyone had a double yolker lately?

XL ones from the local farm shop are often double Yokers

Bunnyhair · 22/09/2023 18:39

We had 3 in this week’s box! The key is to get mixed weight eggs. You get huge eggs and tiny eggs. The huge ones are almost all double yolkers.

Last one I had in August 2018 from a friend's very free range ladies!

I regularly buy eggs from a small farm shop - over the summer I had 3 separate boxes of 6 that were all double yolkers.

Oysterbabe · 22/09/2023 18:43

I bought a box in Lidl once that were all doubles 😃

NorthCliffs · 22/09/2023 18:48

I had twelve in a box of twelve recently!

You’re right, and it’s yet another issue this government is failing to do anything about.

Simplepink · 22/09/2023 18:49

Loads the past few weeks!! Delivered from our milkman from a local farm I presume

Growlybear83 · 22/09/2023 18:50

I remember a few years ago you could buy boxes of double yolkers from Sainsbury's. I've not had one for a while now.

SloraceHughorn · 22/09/2023 18:50

I have never had a double yolker 😥

I stopped buying large eggs after reading (on here I think) that large eggs aren't healthy for the hens so maybe that's why. Or I'm just unlucky.

pawsandponies · 22/09/2023 18:52

As a person with chickens double yolks are not such a good thing because usually they are overly large for the chicken to pass, and can get stuck.

Certain breeds of chicken are also more prone to laying them then others so it might be that the hybrids most layer chickens are nowadays are not prone to them. I get a few from my Rhode Island Reds.

We have a local egg supplier who sells trays of double yolkers. He said that supermarkets tend not to sell double yolkers as they are so big and therefore more liable to be broken when being transported. Whether or not this is true I don't know!

Ratfinkstinkypink · 22/09/2023 18:53

They tend to come from young hens who are just beginning their laying life, once they establish laying they don't lay double yolkers any more. Commerical farms get rid of their hens when they reach 72 weeks of age and they then get a new flock, the new hens then lay double yolkers.

Lahdedahiam · 22/09/2023 18:53

Yes you're right and no I haven't!!

isntitapip · 22/09/2023 18:54

Our hens have been laying double yokers and they're only young. We have a cockrel, not sure that makes a difference or if we're just lucky?

We buy from a local farm also . Used to double and even triple ( a few times ) however this year , not a single double.

Never had a triple!!

BlackeyedSusan · 22/09/2023 18:54

I have had a few from the same box. But this is the only time I have had them.

Moreorlessmentallystable · 22/09/2023 18:55

Yes, but we have chickens, we get one double yoker most days 😉

itsnevertolate · 22/09/2023 18:56

I bought half a dozen from Aldi a few months ago and they were all double yolks. I usually get eggs from the local farm shop and had never had a double yolk before.

NorthCliffs · 22/09/2023 18:56

6 eggs, 12 yolks!

This might be a silly question, but how on earth do they know what's going to be inside the shell?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/09/2023 18:57

I had a box of 6 recently from Tesco and every single one was a double yolker!!! I was so excited!

tac10 · 22/09/2023 18:57

Yes we had 3 double yokers from a box of 6 the other month. None since though!

KvotheTheBloodless · 22/09/2023 18:58

We had a few double yolkers when we kept chickens. Occasionally one would lay a massive egg that made me wince in sympathy with the hen that laid it - it was generally a double yolker.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 22/09/2023 18:59

This thread is amazing me, I've never had a double yolker in my life or seen one.
