Double Yolkers

EatsYummySprouts · 22/09/2023 18:11

I am a lover of eggs, and have a boiled egg with toast soldiers every day for breakfast.

I buy eggs from various sources, often from a local farm.

As a child, I can clearly remember it being a real treat to get a double yolker.

I have not had one for years and years.

Has anyone had a double yolker lately?

Chicks form from the white of the egg, not the yolks. The yolks are what the growing chick feeds from. So you wouldn't get two chicks from a double yolker!

We keep chickens as pets and luckily frequently get a double yolker

gamerchick · 22/09/2023 21:29

I go to our local farm for ours. They go through a machine to check they're double yolkers so we know they're certain.

Once had a box of six that were all double yolkers- had the odd one since but not for ages.

Was watching Little House on the Prairie once and Mrs Ingalls was selling eggs to the Olsens - they were trying to diddle her and she said that she wanted more money as 6 had a double yolk. DH and I were mystified as to how she would know and decided she must have to put them up to the light to see.

I need to get out more!

We've recently had a few double yorkers from our new hens. One was a huge egg but the other was just a normal sized egg so no clue.
Think I've only ever had one in commercial eggs.

If the double yolkers were fertilised and left with the hen to hatch, what would happen? Would you actually get two chicks, or would one absorb the other yolk?

They would both develop but also both die.

I keep a few chickens and had a Bluebell hen that laid a double yolk at least once a week throughout her life.

Generally, it's the younger hens who lay double yolks whilst their systems are getting established. You rarely get one from an older girl.

@Panda368 I believe you. Same has happened to me. As previous poster says, very tiresome when you are baking.

NIparty · 22/09/2023 22:00

I got a whole box of double yolks a couple of months ago. Blew my kids minds.

BashfulClam · 22/09/2023 22:04

I had a full box of double yolks recently.

JocastaElastic · 22/09/2023 22:05

Able & Cole have lots of eggs with double yolks.

I didn't think it was either? From memory the germinal disc is attached to the surface of the yolk and that's what develops into a chick. So 2 yolks = 2 germinal discs and potentially 2 chicks.

My primary school had limited imagination with school trips and we went to a 'teaching farm' 3 years running Grin.

Box of 6 from Morrisons, everyone a double. I've had this a few times.

roseopose · 22/09/2023 22:28

I have ducks and chickens, the ducks lay massive eggs sometimes which are often double yolkers. Can't recall ever having one from shop bought eggs though.

CherryMaDeara · 22/09/2023 22:29

Not in the shops. We bought 2 dozen from a farm shop advertising them.

Shadypaws23 · 22/09/2023 22:30

I've never had one

Rainpigeon · 22/09/2023 23:13

Definitely not as frequent as they used to be. I had a triple yolker a few years back.

kitsuneghost · 22/09/2023 20:12

I had a partially formed chick once.

I would literally vomit

My experience (20 years of poultry keeping) is the reverse.

While you may get the occasionbal double yolker as young hens get started laying, senior hens lay them much more often.

Commercially hens are culled long before this, but my 5-9yo girls are the double-yolker layers. Big eggs, less frequent laying.

They are easy to spot as the eggs are too long and often lave a little ridge halfway along. They are also far, far heavier.

GuffyTheDustBuster · 23/09/2023 16:38

Hadn't had a double yolker for must be 20 years - then last month 2 in one box!

So excited I took a picture 😁

We had a box of six from Aldi, all double yolks. Never had one before, or since!

RichardArmitagesWife · 23/09/2023 16:44

It's probably related, but the hens that live to be between 5 and (my longest record) 11 years old are the larger breeds of hen like Orpingtons, Bluebelles, Brahmas and other mixed use breeds.
