Double Yolkers

EatsYummySprouts · 22/09/2023 18:11

I am a lover of eggs, and have a boiled egg with toast soldiers every day for breakfast.

I buy eggs from various sources, often from a local farm.

As a child, I can clearly remember it being a real treat to get a double yolker.

I have not had one for years and years.

Has anyone had a double yolker lately?

This might be a silly question, but how on earth do they know what's going to be inside the shell?

I remember from a TV programme that they choose eggs from chickens who are the right age for double yolkers and then scan the eggs to make sure there are two yolks inside.
I once had a whole box of six double yolkers from Asda and am now going to search out local free range large eggs to see if I can get some more.

I’ve had loads this year. Went through a phase of getting more than 1 in each box of 6 from Tesco!

If the double yolkers were fertilised and left with the hen to hatch, what would happen? Would you actually get two chicks, or would one absorb the other yolk?

I've wondered this for years!
I've asked everyone I've come across who might know, including an actual proper egg farmer.
Nobody has ever been able to tell me...

I had one last week in a box of Burford Browns, I was ecstatic because it's been years since I had one. My poached egg was 80% yolk it was marvellous.

I once had 6 in a box but that was 20 years ago.

Me too! And they were only supermarket ones.

Blackberrybrandy · 22/09/2023 19:07

We have some free range, very spoiled, chickens. Some of the hybrids laid them constantly when they were younger and two of them still are prone to laying them. Ours aren't necessarily larger eggs than usual for the chicken but they just feel different somehow when you pick them up. We probably get three double yolkers a week between five chickens and they must be 3 years old now

MoiraRosesBaybay · 22/09/2023 19:11

I had two entire half dozen boxes that were double yolkers.

My dad used to work on lots of farms and would often come home with trays of eggs that the farmers couldn’t sell as they were double yolkers.

HorseySurprise · 22/09/2023 19:12

I read recently (but I can't remember where, sorry) that now most double yolkers are sent to manufacturers who just use yolks and not whites in their product. I don't know how true this is (especially as pp are mentioning buying them in supermarkets).

FallingAutumnLeaf · 22/09/2023 19:13

Mum gets trays of eggs that don't meet the supermarket requirements. She goes through phases of getting double yolkers. Apparently it's seasonal, plus they often are too heavy for supermarket specifications.

Get thee to south Lincolnshire - in my experience, most of the eggs in the egg vending machine at Ryhall are double yolkers.

therealcookiemonster · 22/09/2023 19:20

I've never had a double yolker....😒

Poetnojo · 22/09/2023 19:23

We got new hens recently, I had never had a double yolker before these.

I got quite a few in one box earlier this year from Tesco

I also got a square egg which freaked me out

kitsuneghost · 22/09/2023 20:12

I had a partially formed chick once.

VickyEadieofThigh · 22/09/2023 20:15

We buy our eggs from the farm up the road. At least 50% of them - regularly - are double-yolkers.

Evenstar · 22/09/2023 20:18

I have my own chickens and got them as Point of Lay this spring, I had lots of double yolkers when they started laying and one triple. Before that I hadn’t had one for many years, I can remember them in the 70’s we lived very rurally and had farm eggs.

HappiDaze · 22/09/2023 20:47

It looked squarer. the photos don't do it justice

Put a light behind an egg and you should be able to count the yolks. We did this when we had a hen sitting on eggs as we were candling / checking to see what was good and what hadn’t taken, as the infertile eggs can go off and ruin the clutch. I used a torch and a tube of paper with the egg in front (in the dark!). Something similar helps separate out the double yolkers for sale.

A couple of years ago I got half a dozen eggs from a market stall and they were all double yolkers! Never happened again since unfortunately

Freezingcoldinseptember · 22/09/2023 21:06

I loved collecting the eggs and chatting to the Ladies at one of my customer's homes. Saw this one day...
The clever girl had hidden one precious egg under a bush... Came out very pleased with herself!

Within the last year, but not frequently at all. We had a five in a box of six once, it was very unexpected and exciting (can you tell we don’t get out much?).
