To think that girl's and women's swimsuits are sexualised

Why should I have to make sure I've tidied my pubic hair before going swimming? None of my other clothes cut so close to my genitalia.
Is it about aerodynamics? (the swim shorts worn by most men definitely aren't)
Or were they designed by men and now we're all just conforming to societal norms?

I agree with OP, growing up all there was that I could buy was cheap tie string bikinis. I remember my mum taking me for a wax and I was just so self conscious the whole holiday!

SaturdayGiraffe · 21/09/2023 23:16

And have you noticed that women’s swim shorts are cut lower than men’s to reveal the belly?
Women and girls are on display, because we are public property.
Men and boys are not on display because they are private individuals.

I really like this swimsuit but whenever I see someone wearing one the first thing I think is that they must have a bikini line halfway down their legs.

I have one of those, thanks to Danazol.

Mine aren’t nor are my DDs swim shorts “cut lower to reveal the belly”
The belly isn’t being revealed anyway because it’s covered by our tops.

Funny, men and boys nipples are on display…

merrymelodies · 21/09/2023 23:23

Personally I prefer a high cut suit because it's more flattering (on me). Gives the illusion of longer legs. And I wax when I wear a swimsuit because I don't like looking at pubes and I can't imagine anyone wants to see mine.

Yes blah blah can buy whatever you please, but OP is right that the default style, as it has been for gymnasts' leotards is a lot more revealing than the men's versions.
Good that there are more choices available now but op's point stands.

It really doesn’t - it’s nothing to do with men designing them (?!), just what has been popular among purchasers.
Those purchasers are women - and products that sell are invested in and developed further.

Men hardly ever buy swimwear for their partners, so the style of ‘revealing’ swim suits is bugger all to do with men I’m afraid.

Pandor · 21/09/2023 23:27

I think people are also ignoring the fact that men’s genitalia is a bit more…mobile than women’s, often at awkward moments, and especially over the course of a long day at the beach.

That thought alone is enough to get them reaching for the baggy board shorts rather than risk the “leave nothing to the imagination” speedos!

CharlotteBog · 21/09/2023 23:31

LuckOfTheDrawer · 21/09/2023 22:52

I don't buy the argument that you can get both revealing and non-revealing men's swimwear too, so this isn't an issue.

The vast majority of women's swimwear is revealing, while the vast majority of men's swimwear isn't.

I wonder why that might be.

I would say that 1/2 the men I see at my local lane swim wear long cut but snug shorts rather than baggy ones. Pretty revealing IMO. But everyone's just getting on with their swim.
Tri suits are very snug all over, so as not to have fabric flapping about. Wet suits need to be snug.

sunglassesonthetable · 21/09/2023 23:34

Thank god for baggy board shorts I say.

On this note - does anyone know of a girl's tankini suitable for age 13 ish?

I do not want a bikini - she doesn't like wandering around with her belly button out! I, after hours of looking, eventually found one by Fat Face but DD is growing out of it.
I just want a full vest and bottoms / shorts

Thanks!

Try Lands End.
I just had a look and they only have one pair of swim shorts, sadly too small for your DD, but there are a few vest length tankini tops.

Maybe keep an eye.

I’ve swum in a legsuit for years now. Fantastic way to avoid dealing with any of that nonsense.

I have this one. My last one lasted about a year. I swim a fair bit though in pools and wild swimming under a wetsuit or just with a pair of yoga pants if water is warm enough. It has support for the generous of nork I'm an E cup.

I see your E cup and raise you my H cup. It really is Bravissimo or don't swim for me.

QS90 · 21/09/2023 23:40

Just bought one of the "boyleg" suits too! @MeinKraft you should be on commission 😂

Men's and boy's nipples aren't deemed sexual in mainstream British society.

TheMountainsCall · 21/09/2023 23:43

I just don't buy that sort of thing and have never had a problem getting a swimsuit that is wider cut at the bottom. I've also put boardies over my swimsuit if I wanted to cover more.

Escapetofrance · 21/09/2023 23:44

The vast majority of shops that sell swimming costumes do not stock boy leg designs. I’m talking about M and S, TU, Next (maybe online), Primark, H & M etc.
Yes you can get them online which is great, but walking up your high street-it’s a different story.

How do these outfits have enough bottom padding to prevent chafing on the bottom during the cycle ride part of a tri ?

How do they not get thigh rub during the running phase in those?

If you go to stores that market bras towards curvier women, they will likely have brands that are really nice but more likely to cover wider. I tend to go for those kinds of brands because I am long in the body and find some of the suits that go into bigger sizes (and also have the smaller sizes) cater to a longer body. They also tend to have better bust support.

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 21/09/2023 23:52

IslaWinds · 21/09/2023 23:15

That’s not true. Many larger cup sized women wear tank tops or swim shirts with swim shorts.

Putting surf or canoe attire on to swim is not the same as being able to buy an actual bra-fitted full-coverage swimming costume.

Yours, someone who already puts a canoeist's rash top and board shorts over a bra-sized bikini. Which means twice the layers and gets too warm, so I hate it.

Threemangoes · 21/09/2023 23:54

I wear long sleeve shirt with full length leggings. All covered up!

AmazingSnakeHead · 21/09/2023 23:57

IslaWinds · 21/09/2023 22:55

I agree. Europe as a whole is less prudish about the human body than the U.K. and other countries/cultures.

"Europe" is a big place! The European country I was raised in is very militant about what counts as acceptable fashion and body wise. So whereas on the surface it appears less prudish (topless at the beach is normal, more comfortable with skin on show) it comes at the cost of making sure your body is shaved and presentable. Brits are far more accepting of different body choices, even though the same beauty standards are there in the background. But the flipside is that we might then not want our bodies to be on display quite as much.

GrandTheftWalrus · 22/09/2023 00:13

I usually wear mens swim shorts and a tankini top but I like the look of the female board shorts. May buy a couple of pairs before next year's hols.

User764 · 22/09/2023 00:15

Can anyone find a maternity legsuit or swim shorts?

Obimumkinobi · 22/09/2023 01:39

"Gussett erosion" is definitely a thing (and may well be the title of my next dissertation)! I don't want to wear boylegs (although they're a great solution for many). I just want to be able to buy a regular a cossie/bikini that doesn't flash my arse and pubes. I never used to have to "trim" for an M&S cossie but now I do.

Yes, I could wear shorts, leggings, rash vests etc but I'm happy in a "regular cossie", and don't want the jeopardy of flashing my labia every time I get off a sunlounger.
