To think that girl's and women's swimsuits are sexualised

Why should I have to make sure I've tidied my pubic hair before going swimming? None of my other clothes cut so close to my genitalia.
Is it about aerodynamics? (the swim shorts worn by most men definitely aren't)
Or were they designed by men and now we're all just conforming to societal norms?

I expect the woman was just as weirded out by a small child's face right up her arse.

She didn't even see me. I was still half a metre away 🙄

Oh, I do apologise for being a bit weirded out by a face full of pubes as a small child! Good heavens!

To be totally clear, the judgy bit was when you said "🤢 please trim or cover up your bits appropriately". It's not your body to dictate about and there isn't anything illness-inducing about freshly-washed pubic hair.

Similar arguments that some kinds of hair are somehow wrong and should be removed or altered are used against Black women, including school girls, to justify uniform rules and dress codes that ban their natural afros. The arguments are just as shit then.

JaneJeffer · 26/09/2023 13:44

For a long time the only swim gear you could buy was really skimpy. It's great nowadays there's such a choice.

I wasn't loitering. I came up to the surface directly infront of the ladder. I wasn't policing anyone's bodies, it just was so unexpected and shocking to me at the time.

I could easily wear my swim shorts a bit lower and expose a strip of my pubic hair in public... I assume that's perfectly okay? You wouldn't be policing my body would you, or think showing a bit of natural pubic hair is a problem and fuck everyone else's sensibilities, correct? Hmm.

Coming up to the surface directly under the ladder is disrespectful of other people's personal space and potentially dangerous.

If you gave people enough space then you would not be close enough to get an eyeful of their public hair. It's a shame no one taught you this.

Maybe we should all get those bumper stickers that say, "If you can read this, you're too close" and stick them on our arses.

You do realise half a metre is only 50cm?

That's about the distance from my elbow to my fingertips.

Many men have pubes extending up to their navels, I believe known as the "garden path". If your shorts, securely and correctly worn, show part of your pubic hair, then you are not doing anything wrong or indecent.

What you are suggesting is wearing your shorts lower than the manufacturer intended, at risk of them falling off. This is not the same as not shaving before a swim. It's a false comparison to pretend that they are.

Yeah, and I do realise 50cm is only 500mm.

I was too close for comfort, that much is for sure! I didn't make the same mistake twice anyway.

Yes, too close for her comfort.

I don't think swimshort manufacturers actually stipulate where on your waist you should wear the shorts. It seems to be quite fashionable for younger men to wear them low to show off the muscles which look like a 'v'.

Personally I wouldn't be comfortable with hairs poking out of my undergarments in a public setting, but each to their own.

Look, either you were 50cm away and got a close up of her minge that still has you traumatised decades later, or she didn't notice you, but these two things cannot both be true. Make your mind up.

You cannot know that. She may have been too polite to flag your encroachment on her personal space.

Diamondcurtains · 26/09/2023 14:19

I only wear short style swimsuits or tankinis. There are hundreds to choose from on the internet. If you don’t want a more revealing one don’t buy one it’s really that simple 🤷

It was a noisy pool, she didn't hear me break the surface, she was concentrating on pulling herself up and out. If someone silently came up behind me and was half a metre away, how would I know they were there unless I turned around? Anyway, this was 20 plus years ago!

sunglassesonthetable · 26/09/2023 14:20

Be weirded out. I would have been too. And wouldn't have swam that close to someone going up the pool ladder again. Social distance lesson learned.

But I wouldn't be on SM decades later putting out pube maintenance standards. The "weirded out" bit was your issue not hers. She just went up the ladder in her cossie.

She probably knew and just ignored you anyway. @Querypost

It's not possible to emerge from a body of water silently.

If this happened, she was certainly thinking, "Ugh, what is that little gobshite doing right underneath me, go away you horrible creature!"

The hard part is the combination of legsuit bottoms and bra-sized top in 34HH. If I had 34As there'd be no problem.

To be fair I think it is .

But that’s the same with any swimsuit or bikini. I’m a 34H too and a size 14/16 so have the same problems.

spookehtooth · 26/09/2023 14:33

@Querypost let me take that shovel off you 🤣 There's nothing that makes the judgy comment about shaving okay. You're best off just acknowledging that and moving on

They don't have bra sizing.

sunglassesonthetable · 26/09/2023 15:06

They don't have bra sizing.

FYI

Bra Stop, Curvy Kate and Simply Be all have Bra Sizing swim tops.

And swim leggings are at Calypso, Lands End , Amazon, Decathlon.

It’s great that we can choose what swim clothes to wear. We don’t have to wear skimpy stuff if we don’t want to. But we don’t have to cover up either if we don’t want to. We can choose. Hurrah!

The pubic hair story however has made me think. What’s our right to look natural and however we like vs other people’s right to have pleasant surroundings? Freedom to vs freedom from? Where’s the line on that?
