To think that girl's and women's swimsuits are sexualised

Why should I have to make sure I've tidied my pubic hair before going swimming? None of my other clothes cut so close to my genitalia.
Is it about aerodynamics? (the swim shorts worn by most men definitely aren't)
Or were they designed by men and now we're all just conforming to societal norms?

My husband is from the Middle East, so I got a modest swimsuit for going to the beach there. This is the brand:
https://www.seafanny.com/

The name is a bit silly, but the costume is actually really nice - made of regular swimsuit material, but not clingy and tight. Also means you are less at risk of sunburn I'm sensitive areas! You can also just wear the leggings part with a regular costume.

pah swimsuits. That's nothing.

Look at differences between women & men's outfits at elite competition level for...
triathlon
gymnastics
skating
track running events

and tell me why ... just why. if the women's tri-suit is so aero, why aren't men adopting same lack of coverage to get same aero advantages.

An irony is that women 'feel the cold more' (biology). Yet we get the skimpy clothes.

Why ...

Gymnastics I agree, but as a triathlete I have to argue against your pictures. For a start, they're competing in very different events so the two pictures are not comparable. Lots of women wear trisuits with legs, but they're based on men's styles and I find they're really difficult to run and swim in. The woman's suit gives complete freedom of movement, is much cooler and will dry much faster. It won't roll up around her legs and chafe. It will let her torso turn during the run. Being allowed to wear so little is actually liberating as a female athlete because you can perform as your body is meant to, not being forced to cover up modestly to protect the menz.

It's 'liberating' to play in knickers (-style bikini bottoms) rather than in shorts? It's so liberating that the European Handball Federation have to protect women from not being liberated enough by fining the Norwegian women's team for wearing shorts?

I have this one. My last one lasted about a year. I swim a fair bit though in pools and wild swimming under a wetsuit or just with a pair of yoga pants if water is warm enough. It has support for the generous of nork I'm an E cup.

RomeoandJomeo · 21/09/2023 21:41

I agree, and the differences in men and women's outfits in sporting events give me the rage... but I've never been bothered about showing a bit of public hair when swimming, and certainly don't shave it off.

Clingfilm · 21/09/2023 21:44

Yes! Just week I was looking to see if there was a thread on this, I've worn a pair of men's swimming trunks as my bikini bottoms for years but they're looking tatty and the newer style has a masculine pattern so I can't replace.

Been looking for a nice normal bikini (I don't need tummy bloody control) with shorts (not just granny knicker size) for a while.

I shave my legs and underarms but sod having to do pubes every time I want to swim, it's a faff and I get a rash, as ever I ask, do men have to do this? No they fucking don't.

ZenNudist · 21/09/2023 21:48

I think you have to question why you are so bothered about hairy legs or bikini line other than societical norms.

I just don't worryabout it and swim in a nice lightweight normal swimsuit. It's definitely not serialised. I look pretty rotund but it gets me up and down the pool, bikini line and all...

How do these outfits have enough bottom padding to prevent chafing on the bottom during the cycle ride part of a tri ?

ZenNudist · 21/09/2023 21:49

Oh and you do see men in budgie smuggler/ speedos but I try not to look!!!!

UnctuousUnicorns · 21/09/2023 21:50

StamppotAndGravy · 21/09/2023 21:16

You could just not shave ;) I do serious swimming. The men wear budgie smuggler and the women wear high cut one pieces. If guess about 60% of both sex shave every session. We're there to swim, who cares if you're a bit hairy. By the time you've seen everyone naked in the changing rooms, wobbles scars and all, what's a bit of hair?

I've never been naked in a changing room, not do I ever intend to be. There are individual cubicles for changing in.

WeeOrcadian · 21/09/2023 21:54

On this note - does anyone know of a girl's tankini suitable for age 13 ish?

I do not want a bikini - she doesn't like wandering around with her belly button out! I, after hours of looking, eventually found one by Fat Face but DD is growing out of it.
I just want a full vest and bottoms / shorts

Thanks!

Memories from long ago of being on the beach and a male friend of ours came over to talk, he squatted on his haunches quite close to me and shall we say that his bathers did not contain everything. It was an uncomfortable conversation especially as another friend couldn't contain her laughter any longer and told him to put his hairy bits away.

dizzydizzydizzy · 21/09/2023 22:17

I have often thought that, OP. In fact female teenage club swimmers often have costumes that don't even cover tbeir bottoms, whereas the boys have shorts they go halfway down their thighs.

ThePoshUns · 21/09/2023 22:18

I surf so wear a swimsuit that has 'shorts' length legs as don't want a wedgie. Ergo no need to worry about pubes.
Swimsuits are practical if you buy the right style.

underneaththeash · 21/09/2023 22:22

I bought one last year, looked fine on website.
Didn't try it on before going on holiday, it was literally up my bum - both in an uncomfortable and revealing way. I'm late 40's but toned and slim.
DH loved it.
DS1 didn't say anything
DS2 (15) said it didn't fit.
DD said it looked obscene - but that was only when the bloke siting next to us stared at me every time we got up.
It sold on vinted.

Trickofthetrade · 21/09/2023 22:24

I really like this swimsuit but whenever I see someone wearing one the first thing I think is that they must have a bikini line halfway down their legs.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 21/09/2023 22:26

Have you seen the size of Men's Speedos?

Well, they choose to wear them. There are so many options today! I used to have to wear running shorts over a bikini bottom to swim in before they came out with women’s board shorts.

KnittedCardi · 21/09/2023 22:28

Pandor · 21/09/2023 21:26

I guess we could all swim naked, as why should anyone have to feel ashamed or obliged to cover their bodies.

Or we could all cover up every inch of flesh when we go swimming, in something that hides every contour.

That, and pretty much everything in between is up for grabs - it’s all down to prevailing cultures and fashions.

One thing you can be sure of, it will never stay stable - sometimes it will be more, sometimes it will be less.

When it swings one way people will find the other way appalling and wanton. When it swings the other, people will laugh and shake their heads in disbelief at the prudishness of their mothers and grandmothers.

Nothing is right, nothing is wrong, it just is, and it just keeps changing.

Exactly this. Freedom to wear what you want. The early adopters of bikinis celebrated their freedom and emancipation. Women all over the world are fighting and dieing to have that freedom. I don't like the current trend for modest dress, but that's my choice too. I am sure it will change and change again.

Hotfeetcoldfeet · 21/09/2023 22:28

@MeinKraft i have ordered one too. Looks perfect. I’ve been on a search for the perfect cossie for years as my bum eats them all so I’m hoping this one will solve all my problems, thanks!!

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 21/09/2023 22:29

Thanks from another stranger!
I've actually got one of these but have worried about wearing it and looking like a Victorian swimmer. Not being alone would be wonderful.

It is great news that other women don't want to reveal their pube-plucking skills at the pool or beach :)

Somanycats · 21/09/2023 22:30

For those saying women choose what swimmers to wear, why do you think that most women 'choose' to wear swimmers that show their arses and seem to require the wrenching out of pubic hair, and most men don't? Why do men and women make different choices?

UndercoverCop · 21/09/2023 22:34

This is definitely a thing in women's swimwear but I think a lot of children's swimwear could be more covered, particularly for sun protection. DS tends to wear 3/4 swim legging things and a rash vest, but most boys on holiday were in trunks or shorts and no top. Girls' swimwear is often more sexualised though.
