To think that girl's and women's swimsuits are sexualised

Why should I have to make sure I've tidied my pubic hair before going swimming? None of my other clothes cut so close to my genitalia.
Is it about aerodynamics? (the swim shorts worn by most men definitely aren't)
Or were they designed by men and now we're all just conforming to societal norms?

There's a thread currently talking about those arse cheek out swimsuits. This is the perfect antidote.

Abergale · 21/09/2023 21:01

Yes! I don’t know why people are acting like you are being awkward. Most women’s swimwear give the same coverage as a pair of knickers, even the “sporty” rather than beach wear type ones. You might find a pair of shorts but normally there are 30 pairs of knickers design for 1 pair of shorts kinds.

I had a Nike set that was basically shorts and crop top that gave great coverage but it got discontinued :( I find swimwear really hard to buy I’m an awkward shape.

@MrsTerryPratchett Thank you 😊

Mooshamoo · 21/09/2023 21:06

I hate wearing women's traditional swimsuits too. They are so short and uncomfortable. I want to wear swimming shorts like men

WeightoftheWorld · 21/09/2023 21:07

I always wear legsuits or swim shorts but agree they can be difficult to find. I've had ones from Sports Direct before, I agree they don't last well and also I find them small on the bust...tend to have a bit of a side boob issue with them as I'm slim but a larger cup size. So then sometimes it's trade off over what I'm going to expose when nothing fits well too! Decathlon do some swim shorts but again I've found it hard to find stuff that fits, tend to be either too tight around my thighs, or alternatively too big round the waist in a bigger size.

Get a legsuit, I’ve had one for years.

This! You might look like an Olympian with all
the gear and no idea but if you want to go swimming regularly without having to get the hedge cutters out every other day, it’s the perfect solution!
search for DHB brand on wiggle.com

This kind of thing?

Karwomannghia · 21/09/2023 21:13

Definitely not sexualised. Miss worlds only wore swimsuits to demonstrate their personalities and pamela Anderson’s in baywatch was practical for life saving!

IslaWinds · 21/09/2023 21:14

I voted YABU because we have choices. Actual women’s swimsuits for swimming are not sexualised. The “lay by the pool and get a tan” suits are just lingerie and very sexualised- these are the ones that tend to shift or fall off if you try to swim in them.

Mum2jenny · 21/09/2023 21:15

Agree 100% Islawinds

user1846385927482658 · 21/09/2023 21:16

Choices do not occur in a vacuum.

StamppotAndGravy · 21/09/2023 21:16

You could just not shave ;) I do serious swimming. The men wear budgie smuggler and the women wear high cut one pieces. If guess about 60% of both sex shave every session. We're there to swim, who cares if you're a bit hairy. By the time you've seen everyone naked in the changing rooms, wobbles scars and all, what's a bit of hair?

This is just baffling to me - I don't want to wear very revealing swimwear, and I have to search to try to find anything that I'd consider buying.

Women's swimwear is absolutely sexualised.

LuckOfTheDrawer · 21/09/2023 21:18

@IslaWinds, apologies, I didn't read your post properly at all! I take it all back.

lljkk · 21/09/2023 21:19

pah swimsuits. That's nothing.

Look at differences between women & men's outfits at elite competition level for...
triathlon
gymnastics
skating
track running events

and tell me why ... just why. if the women's tri-suit is so aero, why aren't men adopting same lack of coverage to get same aero advantages.

An irony is that women 'feel the cold more' (biology). Yet we get the skimpy clothes.

Why ...

lookingforMolly · 21/09/2023 21:19

Burkinis and similar are available now. Also on Simply Be for size 10 and above there's all kinds of swimwear with varying coverage, even swim dresses.

LuckOfTheDrawer · 21/09/2023 21:19

Actually, I do find the majority of women's swimwear sexualised. I mean, we're not swimming in the Olympic, every gram of fabric doesn't count.

LuckOfTheDrawer · 21/09/2023 21:21

@lljkk, that's shocking.

cuckyplunt · 21/09/2023 21:23

My swimsuit looks like a dust cover for a Panzer tank, nothing sexual unless you are kinky for WW2 military vehicles.

Abeli · 21/09/2023 21:24

Not everyone grows a lot of pubic hair. I have very little and no underarm hair so a swimsuit reveals nothing. Shorts might be more comfortable though.

Pandor · 21/09/2023 21:26

I guess we could all swim naked, as why should anyone have to feel ashamed or obliged to cover their bodies.

Or we could all cover up every inch of flesh when we go swimming, in something that hides every contour.

That, and pretty much everything in between is up for grabs - it’s all down to prevailing cultures and fashions.

One thing you can be sure of, it will never stay stable - sometimes it will be more, sometimes it will be less.

When it swings one way people will find the other way appalling and wanton. When it swings the other, people will laugh and shake their heads in disbelief at the prudishness of their mothers and grandmothers.

Nothing is right, nothing is wrong, it just is, and it just keeps changing.

DreamingOfRest · 21/09/2023 21:27

Thanks @MrsTerryPratchett, my next swimsuit will definitely come from Calypsa! Determined to make a change now

sunglassesonthetable · 21/09/2023 21:27

I have a few swimsuits for different purposes.

I don't want them to be all the same.

Some are more hard working and practical for sea swimming and others are smaller and prettier for lounging around in.

That's fine for me.
