Hello all

DH and I are expecting our first daughter and have decided on the name Skylar. We are aware she might get nicknamed Sky or Skye which we are happy with.

but I see so many threads hating that name. Maybe a few likes, but most seem against it. Is it really that bad? What is wrong with it?!
we love the name so much and really don’t want anything else.

are we being unreasonable to go ahead with it?

Why does opinions of strangers bother you? If you and dh like it, that’s all that matters

Willmafrockfit · 20/09/2023 10:02

mumsnet is huge
there are masses of posters.

PurpleChrayne · 20/09/2023 10:02

Would you really base your decision on what some randoms behind a screen think?

If you like Skylar, name her Skylar.

Duttercup · 20/09/2023 10:03

Why do you care what Mumsnet thinks?!

My baby's name has been described as 'absolutely disgusting' on here 😂

Use the name you like, not that an internet forum has a view on.

Peakypolly · 20/09/2023 10:04

It's because of Breaking Bad that some people dislike the name isn't it? Other than that character it's fine.

Enko · 20/09/2023 10:06

Pick a name you love and use it. Mn imo tends to only like top 50 names. My 4 have mostly (3) of them got names that regularly get yucked from mn people. However they all 4 like their names.

Skylar is a pretty name go for it.

Wolvesart · 20/09/2023 10:06

It’s fine, it was popular about 10 yrs ago.

I know step sisters named Layla and Skylar - roughly same age and not blood relatives but the grandparents loved this outcome

This! Why on earth would it matter what anyone here thinks? (Although, I think it's a nice name, fwiw).
If you both love it then you've found your perfect name, do it!

Moonlightsonatas · 20/09/2023 10:06

My daughter’s name isn’t popular on Mumsnet, everyone in real life is very complimentary though.

PinkRoses1245 · 20/09/2023 10:09

Why do strangers' opinion matter? I personally would just name 'Sky', I hate names which are shortened.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 20/09/2023 10:09

Reminds me of Skylab.

I thought it was made up but I actually quite like its Dutch translation.

Sammi89 · 20/09/2023 10:11

Aw thank you so much everyone.

i struggle with anxiety so I worry over everything!
I know I shouldn’t.
yes me and DH are so agreeable on it!! We never had such an easy agreement ever before, and certainly not for our sons lol.
I just wasn’t sure if it is a name that people might tell me she would get bullied etc.
I’ve never seen breaking bad lol!

Aw we actually also agreed on a name that could be shortened, and we both appreciated that our own names could be shortened so wanted the same for our kids.
I guess that’s part of my overthinking - that she has a bit of choice as she grows up

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 20/09/2023 10:13

Definitely go for the name you love! I think it's nice.

EstieGreenwood · 20/09/2023 10:15

Who cares what random people on the internet think?! It’s your baby - if you love it, go for it!!!

Beezknees · 20/09/2023 10:16

YANBU! Names are a very personal thing. It's nothing to do with anyone else what you name your child. If it was something like Adolf that's going to set the child up to be bullied then I'd say reconsider but Skylar is fine.

rainbowtea23 · 20/09/2023 10:17

My favourite girls name is also one that divides opinions. I’m expecting DS2 so DH has escaped it again he hates it. If we did have a DD it would be her name or at least middle name as I love it.

Mummysalwaysright · 20/09/2023 10:22

It's due to "Breaking Bad" association. Maybe if people didn't like that program on the telly they won't like the name. Or they think you've only chosen it 'cos you watched that programme.

Why don't you try a different name such as Tabitha or Hatty or Urmintrude etc etc as per MN convention

takealettermsjones · 20/09/2023 10:22

I've seen my daughter's name described on here as both "beautiful and classic" and "tacky and awful" 😅 I wouldn't worry OP! If you're holding out for something everyone will love you will be waiting a very long time.

sexnotgenders · 20/09/2023 10:25

I've never posted the question myself, but I am aware that mumsnet absolutely hates my DDs name. I couldn't give a shit. Not sure anyone has actually asked about my DSs name on here, but I'm pretty sure there would be equal levels of outrage that anyone could do that to a child.

It's your child, so you should give her whatever name you want and don't worry about what others think (in real life, my children's names have never raised any eyebrows, despite the horror on here). When it comes to naming kids, it's really best not to tell anyone before the birth - internet or otherwise - as you invite a debate into what should be a private matter between the parents

aSofaNearYou · 20/09/2023 10:26

Well I often dislike the names MNers tend to like. Which really just goes to show that there will always be strangers who don't like your child's name! Don't base it on that, it's by no means a universally disliked name.

Plusque · 20/09/2023 10:27

I don’t like it at all, OP, but why would that matter? You probably wouldn’t care for my son’s unusual name, which only comes up on here on threads about ‘names I love but wasn’t brave enough to use’.

TheChosenTwo · 20/09/2023 10:28

My kids names are regularly dismissed on here as being boring (I guess they must be popular and I do know a few of the older ones name), it’s fine with me!! I had an unusual name and hated it growing up. No one knew how to spell it and there are a few ways of pronouncing it, I still actually hate saying my name out loud! At least my kids don’t have to go through that 😂
If you and your DH love the name that’s all that matters.
FWIW I had a Skylar in my class one year and she was absolutely delightful.

I've seen my name discussed on here, it's a timeless classic name that people still use for their babies, some love it but I've also seen it described as "twee" and "wet." Everyone has different views!

itsmyp4rty · 20/09/2023 10:30

Personally I prefer Skye - but at least it's not Austyn!
