To love a name for baby that MN seems to not like :/

Hello all

DH and I are expecting our first daughter and have decided on the name Skylar. We are aware she might get nicknamed Sky or Skye which we are happy with.

but I see so many threads hating that name. Maybe a few likes, but most seem against it. Is it really that bad? What is wrong with it?!
we love the name so much and really don’t want anything else.

are we being unreasonable to go ahead with it?

I wouldn’t base any large decision on the consensus of Mumsnet.

nobodysdaughternow · 20/09/2023 15:29

MN loves my name. I hate it so much I changed it by deed poll last year.

Since changing it I always get compliments on my new name. Never, ever happened before.

Thanks all I know in massively over thinking but feeling better about it now.
(although feeling silly for even worrying in the first place! 😂) x

My baby didn't have a name for two weeks because I wasn't sure either op. Perfectly ok to be unsure.

SunsetsInVenice · 20/09/2023 18:00

I've heard a lot worse. I don't love it but certainly do not hate the name.
One of my DD's is named Mia. I've had people say it's beautiful. Others say it sounds meh. We love it, that's all that matters.

Mia is on our list!

I’m confused why it would matter what mumsnet posters think.

That's an extremely common name in the US, and no one gets bullied for it. Most people do crazy variations on the spelling too, which is really annoying but also normal. It's perfectly common to me, like John or Mary honestly. I had the same worries myself in a similar situation. I named my youngest Poppy, which is common in the UK but very rare in the US (but gaining popularity). Every time someone asks me her name I have to repeat it several times and finally spell it out. I even say "Poppy, like the flower." The california poppy is literally a state flower, and they grow in everyone's backyards like how can it be that hard to understand lol. She's only 1 but it's making me worried kids will call her Poopy or something in school. So I know your feeling. But I can't think of any way Skyler can be twisted. Sky is also pretty (one of my Poppy's first words!) So I would be proud of it, don't worry.

Same! I spend most of my time eye-rolling all the different ways too many moan about a name, a type of name and all the negative associations they come up with.

There is nothing wrong with Skylar. Easy to say, spell, remember and likely different enough that they will be the only one in their class with the name, and comes with lovely nicknames. If you love it, go for it.

Boopeedoop · 20/09/2023 18:35

I know a Skyla and a Skylar. Both lovely girls. It's a lovely name.

daisypond · 20/09/2023 18:38

Skylar is a boy’s name. I’d be surprised to see it used on a girl.

Don’t go to America then! You’ll be in a permanent state of surprise!

Why does my opinion matter? Or anyone else's ? My DC's have names that people on here have variously described as 'naughty', ' not suitable for a professional career', I had people tell me that the names were cute for a child but not suitable for an adult, even that the names were 'weird'(trust me, they aren't). When I say told, I mean they told me to my face, since MN wasn't around when my DC's were born. And somehow, despite our awful, unsuitable choice of names for our DC's, they both survived to adulthood, both have good careers, including one who is extremely successful in their chosen profession.
Choose the name you like, OP, and don't let anyone else pressure you to choose something different.

Itsnamechange · 20/09/2023 18:57

My dd's name is one of those op and I was disappointed to discover Mnet thinks it's "chavvy". I'm in Scotland and it's not considered chavvy here - it's the name of one of the most beautiful islands in the country.

However I've seen Mnet say some very ordinary Irish boys names are "naughty boy" names so I suspect celtic=common for some here.

Fallingthroughclouds · 20/09/2023 19:30

Nope

Fallingthroughclouds · 20/09/2023 19:31

That was on reference to Skylar being a boy's name.

Fallingthroughclouds · 20/09/2023 19:31

In ffs

EvieLonglegs · 20/09/2023 19:44

My daughters name has been described as faddy and insubstantial on here, I honestly don't care as I (and DH!) love it and fortunately only our opinion mattered!

If you love the name, use it, unapologetically! I think it's lovely and I have a friend with a Skye.

I think it's because MN users are often keen to be middle class, and middle class names tend to be more traditional. Anything trendy or too 'out there' is shuddered at. Which is ridiculous really because I know plenty of poshos with children whose names make Skylar seem positively boring Grin

Bumbers · 20/09/2023 19:46

I love it!

ScrambledSmegs · 20/09/2023 19:47

Thanks to all those who've confirmed it's Dutch/English Schuyler as opposed to Greek Skylla (Σκύλλα). Which is definitely a good thing!

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 20/09/2023 19:49

I like it.

theduchessofspork · 20/09/2023 19:51

Call her it if you want.

People partly don’t like it because it’s seen as a bit low end like Nevaeh or something, if this doesn’t bother you, crack on.

YeOldeBuxomWench · 20/09/2023 19:55

According to MN you should name your child Hortense, Beatrice or Matilda as they automatically become an aristocrat if they have an aristocratic name.

I quite like the name. Name your child what you want.

My first son's name got scoffed at on here and it was probably about 250th of baby boy names, so was worried how it would be received, but I know of loads of boys with his name. it's very popular where I live, so it couldn't have been that bad.

TheSilentSister · 20/09/2023 19:56

I like Skylar and first heard it on 'Breaking Bad' so you may get people making associations with drugs but other than that, it's a pretty name.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 20/09/2023 19:58

@largomargo it's from a few years ago, my ds had about two mins out of nappy before I put him in the bath, crawled off into the hall when I wasn't looking.. my dss shouted 'there's a turd on the rug!!!' Perfect little pile in the middle of a fluffy white non machine washable rug 💩🙄
