To love a name for baby that MN seems to not like :/

Hello all

DH and I are expecting our first daughter and have decided on the name Skylar. We are aware she might get nicknamed Sky or Skye which we are happy with.

but I see so many threads hating that name. Maybe a few likes, but most seem against it. Is it really that bad? What is wrong with it?!
we love the name so much and really don’t want anything else.

are we being unreasonable to go ahead with it?

Luckily the type of people on here who are disparaging about the name of a child, are also the type of person who lives in their parents basement and can’t leave the house without an escort so I wouldn’t worry too much about that .

VeridicalVagabond · 20/09/2023 10:33

I'm only not keen on it because it's the name of my grandmother's very naughty springer spaniel. But as you will likely never meet said spaniel it shouldn't effect your name choice!

I'm sure lots of people would dislike my daughter's name too, especially as we've used a traditional spelling which Mumsnet seems to hate "she'll forever be correcting people on the spelling, she'll hate you for it!" ...but in reality she loves her name, so do we, and it has caused her minimal problems in her life.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 20/09/2023 10:34

Not keen on the AR spelling.Think it looks softer as Skyla

Idtotallybangdreamoftheendlessnotgonnalie · 20/09/2023 10:34

It's not for me, but it makes me think of skylark which is a nice connotation. There's a nesting field near me and it sounds amazing in late spring/early summer.

thing47 · 20/09/2023 10:35

I like Skylar, and as you rightly say @Sammi89 it can be shortened if your DD prefers to do that. You shouldn't give a monkey's what us lot think!

PS I've also not seen Breaking Bad so the reference is totally lost on me.

XenaEcoWarriorPrincess · 20/09/2023 10:37

I like it. And the Skye shortening. Mumsnet are fickle anyway. The name(s) I chose for my children were consistently slagged off here till about five minutes ago and now seem to have the seal of approval. Sucks for me, because I stayed outside the top 100 for a reason and now my children are likely to be know as Name Surname.

Olika · 20/09/2023 10:37

I love the name. I wanted to name our DD Skylar or Skye but my DH didn't agree.

moonriverandme · 20/09/2023 10:43

If you both like the name that's all that matters. No name you choose will have universal approval. Wishing you well for the rest of your pregnancy & delivery. 💐

MariePaperRoses · 20/09/2023 10:44

I highly doubt you will ever meet me so does it matter whether I think is a lovely name or an awful name?

MaryEarpsTongue · 20/09/2023 10:45

Dissapointed its not Balonz tbh.

Woahtheremate · 20/09/2023 10:45

I dont know what it is with it, I think the r on the end makes me think Skylaaaaarrr. I prefer Skylah. But strangers opinions shouldn't matter if you like it go for it.

Cowlover89 · 20/09/2023 10:46

I love it. Don't let other opinions especially on here upset you x

EYTTquestions · 20/09/2023 10:47

Mummysalwaysright · 20/09/2023 10:22

It's due to "Breaking Bad" association. Maybe if people didn't like that program on the telly they won't like the name. Or they think you've only chosen it 'cos you watched that programme.

Why don't you try a different name such as Tabitha or Hatty or Urmintrude etc etc as per MN convention

I always thought that Tabitha (which I love!) was generally quite unpopular on here!

I personally wouldn’t use a name that most people seemed to actively dislike, no matter how much I liked it, I don’t think. I once searched an usual name on here and literally everyone apart from the OPs of the threads said it was awful. It put me off as I wouldn’t want my child to dislike their name, or to have to put up with comments about it.

On the other hand, I wanted a marmite name for DD but her dad was against it as he was worried about name calling. That one is a name that some people absolutely love though, so I would have risked it!

loveisanopensore · 20/09/2023 10:50

The baby names threads are some of the worst snobbery and xenophobia on here.
If you like the name go for it.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 20/09/2023 10:50

If you like it, use it.

(Unless you are unknowingly about to name your child after a serial killer, genocidal dictator, white supremacist, yeast infection or famous sexual predator, in which case reconsider. But Skyler is none of these things, so crack on!)

Woodandsky · 20/09/2023 10:51

If you like it go for it, MN is full of middle class types that think anything that's not Emily or Charlotte or something is tacky.
Our son has an unusual name and he has chosen an unusual name for his son, so he obviously wasn't bullied for it.

Hungryfrogs23 · 20/09/2023 10:55

Again, personally I'm really not a fan of it at all. But that is my opinion. Plenty of people will have opinions on whatever name you choose so if you like it, go for it.

Purplewarrior · 20/09/2023 10:57

I know two Skylars. Both boys.

Ponoka7 · 20/09/2023 10:59

I didn't like or dislike it. I've just looked up the meaning and it's a beautiful meaning in all cultures. I like choosing names not only that I like, but also for the meaning. I do that for my pets as well. My youngest DD's name is often not liked on here, it's a name usually used in the states by people of colour, but was European/Latin. Go with what you like. It isn't in the realms of ridiculous.

Ponoka7 · 20/09/2023 11:01

Purplewarrior · 20/09/2023 10:57

I know two Skylars. Both boys.

The usual spelling for the male version is Skyler.

ManateeFair · 20/09/2023 11:03

There is no name that everyone will like. Give your child the name that YOU like. The opinions of a bunch of strangers on bloody Mumsnet are completely irrelevant - asking people on Mumsnet what to name your child is a bit like asking them what colour to paint your living room.

Debini · 20/09/2023 11:04

I don’t like it but why would you care what I or anyone else thinks. She’s your baby name her what you like.

Mamai90 · 20/09/2023 11:05

It's not my cup of tea but you probably wouldn't like my DDs names either and I wouldn't mind, if everyone liked the same few names then there wouldn't be much variety.

Tbf I've seen a lot worse names on here which might fall into the MN favourites.

Go with what you like, you can't please everyone.

Hankunamatata · 20/09/2023 11:06

I prefer sky

ScrambledSmegs · 20/09/2023 11:08

I've sometimes wondered about the origins of the name Skylar. Is it Dutch or Greek? I've not wondered enough to actually do the research though, clearly!

Anyway, it's fine. It has a nice sound to. MN is weird sometimes, most names are ok.
