Hello all

DH and I are expecting our first daughter and have decided on the name Skylar. We are aware she might get nicknamed Sky or Skye which we are happy with.

but I see so many threads hating that name. Maybe a few likes, but most seem against it. Is it really that bad? What is wrong with it?!
we love the name so much and really don’t want anything else.

are we being unreasonable to go ahead with it?

I wouldn't listen to randoms over the Internet or friends and family for that matter.

Sound like you love the name, don't regret not using it, I think it is a beautiful name by the way.

loislovesstewie · 20/09/2023 12:01

The problem with asking what others think about a name, particularly on an anonymous forum,is that you will get answers saying that it's horrid, twee etc.

TheBarbieEffect · 20/09/2023 12:03

Pick whatever name you want, but do be aware certain names have certain connotations so you’ll both have to live with that.

Skylar is certainly in with the whole Jayden/Kaden kind of crowd and that carries its own baggage.

Liv999 · 20/09/2023 12:04

Call your baby whatever you wish, everyone will always have an opinion, its your opinion that counts

Steev · 20/09/2023 12:08

Honestly? It's not a name I like but so what?

I've never seen breaking bad so don't get the connection but there was a Skylar in my class at school and everyone used to say all aboard the Skylark insinuating she had had lots of boyfriends.

I think it was from a cartoon but I can't remember which one.

TheLightProgramme · 20/09/2023 12:11

I don't really like any instances where people use surnames, especially occupational ones, as given names (taylor, cooper, parker, porter,

(Skylar derives from the dutch surname Schuyler meaning scholar).

But literally who cares? You might hate my kids names, so? Its a web forum.

SquashPenguin · 20/09/2023 12:13

The only time you’d get 99% of MN to agree on a name would be if you called her Taylor Swift.

Use the name you like 😊

Sparklesocks · 20/09/2023 12:15

Echoing others - you’ll never find a name everyone likes so just go with your favourite choice 😊

littleripper · 20/09/2023 12:34

It's seen as 'chavvy' as both my DC names are. And mine are at Oxbridge and an Ivy League Uni so there is no relation to reality, it is pure bigotry.
Skylar is a beautiful name :)

Definitely go for the name you love! I think it's nice.

Off topic, but how did your user name originate? Tell us the back story!! 😂

RoseMarigoldViolet · 20/09/2023 12:52

I thought Skylar was a perfectly ok character in Breaking Bad. What do people have against her?

Name your baby whatever you want to.

And made very famous by the Schuyler sisters in Hamilton.

Goldbar · 20/09/2023 13:24

If you love it, go with it. It's not my cup of tea, but it's nowhere near being a truly "awful" name imo (not that my opinion really matters but there are some names that make me wince).

My advice would be not to tell anyone beforehand and just send a message after the birth announcing the name. It would take someone very rude actually to say something negative about it at that point.

Fwiw I actually prefer Skylar to some names that get a lot of love on here (Artemis, Florence, Agatha, Wren and Willow, to name a few).

I thought she had an annoying smirk signifying superiority to Walt... but Anna Gunn seems lovely.

Agapornis · 20/09/2023 13:33

It's fine, I've seen both love and hate for my own name expressed on MN.

However, take any meaning found on the internet with a serious pinch of salt, especially re the Dutch meaning. I speak Dutch, and doubt the surname Schuyler means 'scholar', because the emphasis in scholier is on the second syllable. Dutch spelling hasn't changed that much in the last 370 years since Mr Schuyler migrated to the USA. A schuiler (modernised spelling, formerly schuijler - ij is often in handwritten records as ÿ) is someone who hides or seeks cover. According to Wikipedia, Schuyler may derive from the name of a hamlet.

lovemelongtime · 20/09/2023 13:40

Really ? Why on earth would you be worried what people on mumsnet think. Its your baby girl and you name her what you want to and what makes you happy.

boysmuminherts · 20/09/2023 13:42

reminds me of Skylar Storm in Lab Rats on DisneyXD.

mycoffeecup · 20/09/2023 13:43

Would you like to be called Skylar?

Workawayxx · 20/09/2023 13:58

Don't worry about what people on MN think! I think Skylar is nice and LOVE Skye. I have a name MN people would hate for my DS (more American surname) and one they tend to love for DD (traditional British). I love them both and they both really suit their names, DS loves his and DD is only 2 and seems to like hers! I've only had compliments on them IRL.

Goldbar · 20/09/2023 14:02

mycoffeecup · 20/09/2023 13:43

Would you like to be called Skylar?

But that goes for many names that people use nowadays.

I wouldn't like to be called any of the following:
Ocean
Artemis
Athena
Luna
Aurora
Delilah
Mabel
Nova
Birdie
Juniper

Some of them sound a bit dated to me and some of them sound odd. But they are all either extremely popular or rising in popularity and this generation won't blink an eyelid at them.

petermaddog · 20/09/2023 14:30

pp skylar is english /dutch not american /even if it is
the weird people here.....xenophobia is thick here

TarquinOliverNimrod · 20/09/2023 14:34

None of my business but I just get Breaking Bad vibes when I hear the name 🤷🏻‍♀️

ASGIRC · 20/09/2023 14:48

YABU for caring about what other people in an online forum think. Who cares? You like the name? go for it! It is your child, not MNers all over the world!

Bubop · 20/09/2023 14:55

Please don’t worry about what strangers on the internet think. You’re going to be using the name everyday, choose something that you love.

My DC have fairly popular names (on purpose, I’m still sore about not finding a headband with my unusual name on it as a child 😅). If I posted them on here I’d get loads of people telling me they’re boring. It doesn’t matter though, I love them.

I met a little Skylar at a soft play this morning as it happens, she was lovely.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

PennywisePoundFoolish · 20/09/2023 14:56

Namer her Skylar.

The baby names board is always quite opposed to whatever the OP lists .There was a phase of Xanthe being "the" go to nMe suggestion but I expect even that's fallen out of favour.
