You really don't know much about media if you think 'isn't it getting like 1984'.
Wakey wakey.
Its been common practice for years for communications teams to drop press releases on busy news days to bury it.
Its is so much more difficult to do the opposite and drop a big news story to cover unpalettable information. Because those news stories are hard (and costly) to produce. You can't just invent them easily.
You DO get some 'dead cat' stories where there is no real substance to them. A three year investigation into the sexual misconduct of Russel Brand, the culture which protected him and the impact on women working in media and comedy, is NOT a dead cat story because it actually has significant public interest merit.
An example of a dead cat story would be the third time Boris Johnson talked about building a bridge to Northern Ireland when its been looked at seriously and repeatedly debunked as logistically utterly ridiculous as an idea for very obvious reasons which anyone with half a brain cell can probably think of without too much effort.
To suddenly be going in 2023, 'Oh its like 1984' is to be really not be paying attention to the world at all.
AND THAT is more depressing than any dead cat or conspiracy story.
