It's not half as salacious, possibly a bit dry and dull to most people.

But it's fucking constitutional dynamite

Oh ok then, let's not bother trying to get rapists behind bars.

@madamreign
In every single example listed in that article, someone had been charged and/or the trial was underway before the reporting in question led to the trial collapsing. There are very clear rules: once someone has been arrested, formally charged, or a trial has started, you can only report what's been brought before the court.

That hasn't happened in this case.

madamreign · 19/09/2023 11:03

It's almost as if people are more interested in the media circus than any actual, practical change.

Cornettoninja · 19/09/2023 11:03

Oh, and pre-empting protests of ‘I don’t support brand etc etc’ I’m sure you don’t. But that argument only carries weight in a world where he hadn’t already issued legal threats or influences on employment to silence them up to this point. That whole argument has the hallmarks of making an undermining, technically credible point to discredit the claims around assault.

Raising awareness of the sustained and systemic nature of their crimes is all part of trying to get them behind bars, against all the odds.

It’s almost like you’re very bad at championing your cause.

People are allowed to talk about things, even if you think there are more important things.

I think you have made your preferences for this perfectly clear, along with the pesky journalists pursing the truth.

I agree with you.

I also think the Boris story was released because the RB story was taking up a lot of attention, rather than the other way around.

The Boris story is the result of a BBC investigation, and it was the BBC who released it. Do you really think the BBC wants to undermine its own investigative journalism?

And if they did - why did they wait until Monday, when the story they were hoping to bury it under was at its height on Saturday and Sunday?

ChillysWaterBottle · 19/09/2023 11:08

Scruffington · 19/09/2023 10:08

ex Big Brother presenter has opinions on the war in Ukraine. So obviously such a towering figure must be brought down by the establishment.

Take good care of those two braincells of yours.

I'm also dying at the idea that ultra-wealthy Hollywood star Russell Brand is somehow outside of the establishment. He did voice acting for the Minions film last year lol. He's pure Hollywood and pure establishment through and through. The only person he's a threat to is women and school girls apparently.

Sorry, CBA to read 14 pages of arguing back and forth about R Brand Grin But the point I wanted to make is sort of irrelevant to the bloody man, anyway:

OP, in what way do you think the appalling Boris Johnson story has been 'buried'?? It's been all over the news and the BBC has been promoting the Kuenssberg series a great deal.

This sort of post just feeds into the bonkers narrative that 'Mainstream Mediabwahaahaaa' is conspiring somehow to cover things up or put out coordinated fake news. Which is the sort of batshit stuff RB has been coming out with for years. I wonder why?

Quisquam · 19/09/2023 11:10

NRTFT, but isn’t it getting like “1984”? Distract the masses, so the real news like what’s going on with the government or say the junior doctors and consultants strikes this week, fade into the background?

Anyway, surely trial by media is at risk of prejudicing any criminal trial?

No, it's really really not that.

All that news is still there too. Nothing is being buried, or hidden from you.

And no, we are not risking that at all.

Does your tinfoil hat need adjusting?

Look, this doesn't even make sense. The BJ 'story' about senior officials considering taking the matter to the queen isn't a quiet government release while the attention is on RB - it came out of the BBC (yeah, those evil Mainsteam Medja guys!) and a current programme being aired. So there's no coordination there. Maybe you think that rather than a coordinated quiet 'taking out the trash' release, the government leaned on the BBC to release this at the same time as the rival tv network CH4 aired the Dispatches...?

HOW exactly do you imagine that works?? And Ch4 are not exactly given to covering up Tory and government scandals so I can't imagine they were leaned on. If you spent five seconds thinking about what you actually mean when you claim this is all misdirection/distraction/fake news to cover up the real news, surely anyone with some brain cells to rub together would realise it just doesn't make plausible sense?

Ocam's Razor, people. It's a Thing.

Well another strike is hardly breaking bloody news 🙄 people are bored to tears and it rarely makes the news.

No, the trial can go ahead safely. The jury will be asked to set aside any prior coverage/assumptions and weigh up the evidence produced as put before in court. Same as the thousands of other high profile cases.

He may plead guilty to have the sentence reduced if he is advised to do so by the sheer weight of evidence against him by his lawyer - there may not even be a trial.

Being an attention seeker I can’t see him finally doing the right thing for the victims. His prison experience is unlikely to be pleasant, so who knows.

Apparently not.

There's no point taking stuff to the police anymore. We've appointed C4 to enforce law and order instead.

You would like that wouldn’t you. Women giving up completely.

Do you also support the terrible persecution of Andrew Tate by any chance?

It’s almost as if people want to see a potential rapist exposed and brought to justice. The police are involved. Brands YouTube has been removed. His tour cancelled. The cogs are turning.

Tate is a nasty little con artist at best. Hope the Romanian authorities get him in the end.

Next?

No need for weeping and hair pulling. Believe the women and address the dysfunctional state. Chasing shadows is a gift to abusers of all kinds.

It's not about believing, it is alleged. That is all. This is a trial by media.

MiddleAgedAndExhausted · 19/09/2023 11:23

Let's ignore the fact that four women have bravely come forward to make these allegations and instead claim there's a conspiracy! This is crazy. I worked in the media for years and it is absolutely wrong to suggest this. Yes, bad news is buried on days when there are bigger things are happening - but it's buried by the organisations/parties/businesses/people themselves and not by journalists. But rumours about Russell Brand have been circulating for years. It must have been a nightmare to research and produce all this without it leaking. The journalists involved in the RB stuff should be applauded. Very few investigative pieces get made these days because of the costs.

You really don't know much about media if you think 'isn't it getting like 1984'.

Wakey wakey.

Its been common practice for years for communications teams to drop press releases on busy news days to bury it.

Its is so much more difficult to do the opposite and drop a big news story to cover unpalettable information. Because those news stories are hard (and costly) to produce. You can't just invent them easily.

You DO get some 'dead cat' stories where there is no real substance to them. A three year investigation into the sexual misconduct of Russel Brand, the culture which protected him and the impact on women working in media and comedy, is NOT a dead cat story because it actually has significant public interest merit.

An example of a dead cat story would be the third time Boris Johnson talked about building a bridge to Northern Ireland when its been looked at seriously and repeatedly debunked as logistically utterly ridiculous as an idea for very obvious reasons which anyone with half a brain cell can probably think of without too much effort.

To suddenly be going in 2023, 'Oh its like 1984' is to be really not be paying attention to the world at all.

AND THAT is more depressing than any dead cat or conspiracy story.

Removed completely? I had a pop up saying that all ads had been removed, so he won't be making any money from it until this is cleared up, but I hadn't realised it had been pulled completely
