Tesco driver said I wasn't disabled

Sara450 · 18/09/2023 21:31

I had a delivery from tesco today. The drivers always bring it up to my fiat on the third floor. I ordered via whoosh today.

The driver text me "I'm here. Come down."

I said "could you please bring it up, I'm unable to come down due to my disability."

He said, "come down."

Then he phoned me and said he'd leave my delivery on the street if I didn't come down.

I phoned my neighbour and she went out for me. He said to her "she's not disabled she's walked down the stairs before."

I'm so upset (maybe I'm being an idiot) but, I have MS and sometimes I'm okay, sometimes I'm not (I'm not today) 😔

Aibu to be annoyed at this?

Not PP, but delivered uber Lots, tesco's whoosh page explains
"For apartment blocks, we’ll try to deliver to the front door of your flat. However, we may deliver to the property’s main entrance if the driver believes it’s unsafe or impractical to deliver to your front door."

I wouldn't deliver groceries to a third floor because impractical but driver was wrong with hiw he spoke.

@TorqueWrench

Driver was perfectly within his rights to not deliver upstairs

You keep saying this but earlier you said...

I don't know about whoosh but historically it was at Tesco's discretion whether they would deliver the shopping upstairs. They reserved the right to deliver to the main entrance.

I may be out of date, however.

So what has changed, because when I asked you couldn't show anything to back up your claims?

What has changed is that another poster posted a screenshot of Whoosh's delivery terms clearly staying that upstairs deliveries are at the driver's discretion.

Which you'd know if you'd like read the thread.

Mostlyoblivious · 18/09/2023 23:27

Don’t let him take that from you. Don’t let his being a terrible person impact you.

Contact Tesco, don’t take any rubbish from them and tell them to deal with Uber and for them to update yourself in the matter as they are the ones that employed Uber, it is their problem. This is absolutely not your problem nor a reflection on you or your disability.

I am so sorry.

Thanks, what didn't you just say?

Which you'd know if you'd like read the thread.

Quite, not as you were so adamant I expected you to merrily direct me to tout 'gotcha' - instead you have chosen to make 2 comments about me not reading the full thread, which of course isn't too clever of you; I already know I haven't read it

Maybe it's my fault, I'm not sure. Maybe I shouldn't order things if I'm unable to collect them? I've just recently been struggling more with my condition and im not sure what's okay anymore.
I don't want to come across as entitled.

He was a lazy git, like others I read that delivery t&c and it states will deliver to the flat unless impractical to do so. He's got no excuse not to deliver, he was perfectly capable of doing so safely he just didn't want to. Flowers

Dodie66 · 18/09/2023 23:29

Why don’t you order with Tesco doing the delivery. They have slots available most days

comedownwithme · 18/09/2023 23:30

So unless it's unsafe or impractical they will deliver to the front door. Not quite the gotcha you thought it was. It was neither unsafe nor impractical for him to deliver to the door.

I don't think I can be any clearer than I already have.

The driver was wrong to say what he said but a proper understanding of the delivery terms would've entirely negated the need for a conversation past the point of him saying "come down and collect".

Probably because OP hasn't booked a slot and realised she needed some stuff?

'Impractical' could be the situation where a high number of his deliveries were on the third floor, meaning it's impractical for him to carry them all up.

flappersdelight · 18/09/2023 23:36

@TorqueWrench She wasn't physically able to go down!! What on earth is it you find so hard to understand about that FFS. If he's not able to go upstairs then he's in the wrong job. You're ableism is rank. And tbqh honest, sending the first text saying "come down" before she'd even said she was unable to wasn't exactly great customer service either.

OP we've been getting Tesco deliveries for about 4 years now and in that time we've only had one instance when a driver has been a bit off. Have always found them really helpful and friendly, so I would just stick with their own delivery drivers if you can.

Sara450 · 18/09/2023 23:36

I didn't order via tesco directly because they don't offer one hour slots, and atm I am not sure how I'll feel from one hour to the next.

Anyway, I'm sorry I seem to have caused an argument, that's the last thing I wanted to do.

Yes, I will try to stick with the normal deliveries from now on. Feel silly for getting upset about it.

Don't apologise. What happened is upsetting. Have you tried co-op deliveries? Similar to whoosh and worked well for us.

weirdoboelady · 18/09/2023 21:37

Follow this up on twitter/x (more people see it there), making it clear that their failure to respond to your FB post (as well as the original actions of their driver) indicates that they are NOT making reasonable disability adjustments, as they are required to do legally. Log it all and complain to the EHRC if you don't get satisfaction.

Edited

This........ Definitely!

Appalling behaviour from the driver....

flappersdelight · 18/09/2023 23:44

@Sara450 Gosh please don't feel silly, you had every right to feel upset.

comedownwithme · 18/09/2023 23:45

@Zonder

They use a third party as well. A lot of the delivery drivers for one are signed up for all the apps and take their pick of the jobs (in busy cities anyway) so there is no guarantee OP wouldn't come across him again.

redribbon1 · 18/09/2023 23:46

so sorry this happened to you. its such a pity there is no respect for anyone who is different eg using a mobility aid, still using a mask. it really feels like the media and MPs are pouring more petrol on the situation all over again hey?

TorqueWrench · 18/09/2023 23:46

He's able to fulfil all the requirements of his job description yet he's in the wrong job?

Or is it actually that you should read the terms and conditions to ensure that they meet your requirements?

You didn't cause any argument. That is solely down to one person who is standing up for delivery men everywhere.

Honestly you have done nothing wrong and I'm sorry you were treated so badly by this man.

Emz6103 · 18/09/2023 23:48

Yes I think you're right and depending how much shopping there was, not OPs fault but that's three flights of stairs!! Two trips? Three trips? That's an awful lot of stairs. Also, playing devils advocate he may have had bad knees, a bad back etc, or could have been at the end of a long day of lifting and carrying people's shopping to the doorstep. He maybe thought that if she lives on the third floor she has to use the stairs to get in and out of the flats and therefore able to use the stairs. It's easy to call him alsorts of names and complain, splash him all over social media etc without knowing the full story. I wonder how many times he's heard that? I doubt he get paid enough to carry everyone's shopping up to the top flats and I believe there's only so much we can ask people to do tbh. I feel bad for OP but maybe she should get someone around to help her in future.

ALongHardWinter · 18/09/2023 23:48

Omg report him!

MrsEdinburgh · 18/09/2023 23:49

My DBil is a Tesco driver & they will take the food shopping order upstairs if you request it.
