Tesco driver said I wasn't disabled

Sara450 · 18/09/2023 21:31

I had a delivery from tesco today. The drivers always bring it up to my fiat on the third floor. I ordered via whoosh today.

The driver text me "I'm here. Come down."

I said "could you please bring it up, I'm unable to come down due to my disability."

He said, "come down."

Then he phoned me and said he'd leave my delivery on the street if I didn't come down.

I phoned my neighbour and she went out for me. He said to her "she's not disabled she's walked down the stairs before."

I'm so upset (maybe I'm being an idiot) but, I have MS and sometimes I'm okay, sometimes I'm not (I'm not today) 😔

Aibu to be annoyed at this?

@TorqueWrench

Also even if he isn't paid to deliver to flats, the issue is his attitude, accusing OP of faking her disability Hmm

Tell me you've not read the thread without telling me you've not read the thread....

Or you could just answer the question Confused

PurpleButterflyWings · 18/09/2023 23:03

@TorqueWrench You seem more outraged and angry that the poor iccle delivery driver was asked to bring the shopping upstairs for a person with a disability, than the fact he was a rude ableist ignorant pig who should not be in the job. (Or ANY job by the sound of it!) Says a lot about you to be frank.

Sara450 · 18/09/2023 23:03

Maybe it's my fault, I'm not sure. Maybe I shouldn't order things if I'm unable to collect them? I've just recently been struggling more with my condition and im not sure what's okay anymore.
I don't want to come across as entitled.

Also, they should cart the stuff to your door. Sainsbury’s always do this when we stay in an upstairs holiday let in the Lakes.

Marmite17 · 18/09/2023 23:05

Whoosh is contracted out, but when a delivery didn't arrive I had a refund from Tesco

Yes, which we all understand by this point, and which I have repeatedly said was unacceptable.

The separate issue is the assumption he will climb umpteen flights of steps to make every delivery, and the resulting abuse that every delivery driver will at some point have experienced for doing their job to the letter.

You'd have a pretty miserable experience as a delivery driver if you were disabled yourself, or even suffering an ailment such as a bad knee.

Bless you. Of COURSE it's not your fault. Flowers Don't think that, just because a certain poster on here is trying to make you feel that way, and is making excuses for the shit service and the hideous ableism from the 'delivery' driver.

I know right:

@TorqueWrench was right I didn't read every word, I thought perhaps asking the person who was adamant the guy was wrong to prove the point would be easier. Instead of showing proof they told me I didn't read the full thread

No shit Sherlock

Who the fuck would be picking up jobs from Uber if they were disabled and unable to do the job?

Chocolatepopcorn · 18/09/2023 22:35

He shouldn't have said that but expecting him to bring shopping to the third floor is taking the piss.

A lot of drivers are not bothered anymore, around us the supermarkets are having to cut delivery slots as they can't get drivers to deliver shopping.

There are many easier driving jobs with more money and less hassle. This is why lots of customer services are getting worse.

This. ^ This poster is really reaching and stretching now, to try and prove their lame and naff and ludicrous 'point.'

Not remotely your fault.

I'd be going ballistic at Uber. That driver needs to be sacked, that is wholly unacceptable behaviour.

Even if he did have a valid reason for not going upstairs, telling a third party (your neighbour) that you aren't disabled based on his experience of seeing you on a good day, is totally unacceptable.

You're not entitled when your disability requires you to have extra help. Not remotely entitled.

I'm actually really sad to read that's how you feel. To me that paints a very sorry picture of a how society still views disability today, if you consider stating your valid needs as entitled.

So, just imagine if he'd said he wasn't bringing it upstairs and OP had just said "ok, no problem, my neighbour is on the way down" and gave him no grief.

Because we all know that's not what happened. They clearly had a conversation about his perceived lack of service because how else would they have discussed the fact that OP sometimes comes down to collect? I doubt the driver was eager to stand around chatting aimlessly.

Driver was perfectly within his rights to not deliver upstairs and shouldn't have had his ear bent. What he said afterwards was wrong but it should never have got to that stage.

Dropthedonkey · 18/09/2023 23:15

whoosh deliveries are by nature only a small amount of shopping aren't they. And they are booked through Tesco so the fact they choose to outsource the delivery shouldn't make a difference

dysongirl · 18/09/2023 23:17

I have been in that situation before..
I too have m.s.
As the saying goes nobody gets it unless you have it. 🙄
You dont have to explain why your disabled to noone. 😍
But in every job there are arseholes.
You got the arsehole today.

There's a big difference between carrying a few bags to a front door vs climbing flights of stairs all day.

comedownwithme · 18/09/2023 23:20

You keep saying this but earlier you said...

I don't know about whoosh but historically it was at Tesco's discretion whether they would deliver the shopping upstairs. They reserved the right to deliver to the main entrance.

I may be out of date, however.

So what has changed, because when I asked you couldn't show anything to back up your claims?
