Tesco driver said I wasn't disabled

Sara450 · 18/09/2023 21:31

I had a delivery from tesco today. The drivers always bring it up to my fiat on the third floor. I ordered via whoosh today.

The driver text me "I'm here. Come down."

I said "could you please bring it up, I'm unable to come down due to my disability."

He said, "come down."

Then he phoned me and said he'd leave my delivery on the street if I didn't come down.

I phoned my neighbour and she went out for me. He said to her "she's not disabled she's walked down the stairs before."

I'm so upset (maybe I'm being an idiot) but, I have MS and sometimes I'm okay, sometimes I'm not (I'm not today) 😔

Aibu to be annoyed at this?

Tesco won’t care as it’s a 3rd party delivery so you need to take it up with Uber but not sure they will really do much? It’s common for delivery services such as Uber deliveroo etc to not come upstairs I once had once come up from just eat and he demanded extra from me for coming up the stairs.

Bounding not blinding 😂

I had an image of blinding round the gym .. I imagined it meant with purpose and effort

Zanatdy · 18/09/2023 22:22

Wow that’s awful. They always bring it up to my flat (2nd floor, there’s a lift but they only use that with large shopping delivery)

Yes, I agree it wasn't professional. The reality of the situation is probably a working class male without a high level of education getting his ear bent for something that isn't his responsibility and saying the wrong thing in the heat of the moment. Probably not helped by the pressure of a huge workload/tight schedule.

This doesn't excuse what he said and a good bollocking/loss of his job will likely make him think twice next time. However, it's clear the OP wasn't aware of the t&c's and this is a separate issue. The conversation should've ended after the driver made it clear he wasn't coming upstairs.

GuardiansPlayList · 18/09/2023 22:24

I’m sorry for your experience OP. My brother has a hidden disability and has sometimes been challenged. Unfortunately some people do misunderstand hidden or variable disabilities and on the other side if the fence, some people claim to be disabled when they are not.
I wonder if the delivery drivers have previously had people claiming to be disabled when they actually were not.

I wouldn't have said what he said but neither would I be 'apologising profusely' for the customer not having read the terms and conditions properly. I suspect the driver would tell a different story, likely involving the neighbour berating him for not doing something he isn't obliged to do.

I also rather expect he encounters a lot of excuses as to why people can't come down and get their shopping, which doesn't make it ok but goes some way to understanding why he might have become frustrated when under fire for not doing something he isn't obliged to do. I certainly wouldn't be trudging up and down stairs all day for less than minimum wage.

Chocolatepopcorn · 18/09/2023 22:35

He shouldn't have said that but expecting him to bring shopping to the third floor is taking the piss.

GeneralLevy · 18/09/2023 22:39

Tbh I complained when a Tesco delivery driver greeted me with ‘you can fuck off with your house. Fucking stupid’.
He’d got angry trying to find my house (clearly labelled and where the map says) on the wrong road and decided to swear.
They didn’t care at all. I find sometimes you get more wound up complaining, it’s pointless with them. Just switch.

asecretslob · 18/09/2023 22:41

@Chocolatepopcorn

Can you elaborate on this please ? And why you think your opinion is so important

glossypeach · 18/09/2023 22:43

I had something similar, I had about 5 steps to get to my previous flat I was in. Tesco driver tried to make me go up and down the steps and carry the boxes to and from my door. I stated I’m disabled and couldn’t do that and he couldn’t care less and refused point blank to deliver my shopping. It’s so awful that us disabled people who are not in wheelchairs still have that stigma of not being ‘disabled enough’. I hope you’re ok OP and and don’t have anymore vile people disrespect you again.

Zonder · 18/09/2023 22:45

Publicly tweet them. This is terrible and the driver needs to be told.

Sara450 · 18/09/2023 22:46

I'd just like to update this thread by saying tesco have refunded me for my order. They've apologised and told me to take it to Uber if I want to take it further.

I won't order from tesco whoosh again. It's not worth the risk of getting that driver again. But I appreciate what they've done.

That’s appalling. You should shame them on twitter (X) but also let Tesco know as they should be aware how third parties are treating their customers.

Me neither- and I have severe arthritis.

People do treat drivers live utter shite- and do take gross advantage.

I wouldn't expect a food delivery driver to be humping stuff upstairs, unless it was something like a team of men like what John Lewis have for freezers/mattresses &c {and that is an expensive service} .

@TorqueWrench I am baffled that you have had the OP come on here and tell you what happened but you are somehow twisting it to a guy who was probably decent just having to follow the rules. He acted rude and quite frankly ableist and awful. That needs to be dealt with. Even if he cant come in (no one has said that is actually the case and many tesco workers do indeed take things up to flats often), the way he spoke is awful and the things he said was awful.

We are being told a version of events, you may think thats not truthful but to go making up your own scenario is just odd. This man was rude and that needs to be dealt with. The OP was lucky to have a neighbour to help, if they didnt then that worker would have happily let someone struggle and left their shopping outside just because they didnt believe they were disabled, thats not the kind of person that should be working in a customer facing role.

All of this. ^ I am gobsmacked at that user's attitude too! Like, oh he is such a hard working poor old minimum pay soul, he can say what the fuck he likes, and say all the ableist shit eh wants. Errr, no he can't FFS! Hmm

WTF have I just read?!! Shock If he can't do the job he is being PAID for, then he can fuck off and let someone else have it! What a really ludicrous, RIDICULOUS post! Angry

I'm not twisting it at all. If anybody is it's you, as you seem to be putting words into my mouth.

I clearly said his comments weren't acceptable but that he's not obliged to carry the shopping upstairs and that the conversation should've ended when he made it clear he didn't intend to.

You have no more right to expect a delivery driver to do unnecesary stuff than you have the right to expect a restaurant to give you a free starter.

It's quite apparent that most of the posters immediately agreed he should've delivered upstairs but he has no obligation whatsoever to do so.

PurpleButterflyWings · 18/09/2023 22:59

OMG @TorqueWrench your posts are getting worse by the minute. PLEASE STOP! Hmm

BananaSlug · 18/09/2023 22:59

Well that’s really amazing of them. I’m surprised they got involved given it wasn’t actually a Tesco driver. Just shows they are not bad after all.

Poaq · 18/09/2023 22:59

If he can't do the job he is being PAID for, then he can fuck off and let someone else have it!

What he said was obviously wrong, but the job he is paid for (which often goes under nmw), doesn't guarentee to the door, ifs it's impractical you don't have to.

He is not being paid to deliver upstairs.

He is probably being paid 'per delivery', meaning he will lose money if he climbs a lot of stairs.

MillenialAvocado · 18/09/2023 23:00

Complain, complain, complain! There's no way he should get away with that. My Dad has a form of MS and like yours, it varies in severity day to day. I'd be furious if he was treated like that. The texts were rude and unprofessional as well!

comedownwithme · 18/09/2023 23:00

@TorqueWrench

Have you anything to back up your claim that he is not paid to deliver to the door? It seems really strange for a delivery company not to, you know, deliver.
