Are we classed as "poor" or average

FutureMrsBourne · 17/09/2023 17:25

Sorry I couldn't think of a better word.
DH earns around £70k.
I only earn £12ph and work 3 days a week as we have 2 children under 5.
Most of my friends are on slightly more than me an hour but not massively, have maybe slightly nicer but similar houses, only really get their hair done in terms of beauty.. but most of DH's friends partners earn £50+.. have big houses with cinema rooms, bars.. have regular Botox, lip fillers etc.
we live in a 3 bed and semi and have saved since 2018 for a new kitchen.
Are we poor.. or average? I feel such a failure compared to DH's friends wives and I worked bloody hard for my qualifications that are rubbish pay!

I don't understand how the OP earns £12 an hour but doesn't grasp other people earn that wage too. Has she never heard of single people or couples where both earn £12?

Tortiemiaw · 17/09/2023 19:33

Hahahahahahaha. We bring home under £40k between us. We must be paupers. Why do people post this stuff?

Test123456879 · 17/09/2023 19:35

Your measure of wealth is utterly ridiculous OP. You can never be happy looking at tacky people like some of your friends you have mentioned. Our household income is >200k and never remotely thought of anything like your friends live.

Pushkinini · 17/09/2023 19:35

Nope you are not poor. An income of upwards of £80k does not put you anywhere near the poverty line.

ShanghaiDiva · 17/09/2023 19:36

Of course you are not poor. You are, however, ridiculous.

Abbimae · 17/09/2023 19:37

£70k household income? Is this a joke or

MonkeyChiselTree · 17/09/2023 19:38

Your DH earns more than my DH and me put together.

HTH

Ontheperiphery79 · 17/09/2023 19:38

No, you are not poor.
I genuinely don't believe you are so obtuse as to not realise how ignorant and disingenuous you come across by phrasing your post this way.
You're clearly not unintelligent enough to not know how to word things better, so please don't play sweet but dim here.

PrinnyPree · 17/09/2023 19:39

Ah the painfully middle-class, I can't afford a £700k house and have regular botox even though my husband earns double the average income, is this what poverty feels like.... 🥲

If this isn't a purposeful shitstir wind-up thread give your head a wobble please. X

Royaly82 · 17/09/2023 19:40

I'm assuming this is a joke/troll post?

Comedycook · 17/09/2023 19:41

Did you start this thread to make others feel like shit?

Our income is similar to yours...I'm aware we're not incredibly rich but we feel very comfortable. I don't worry when doing the food shop about the cost. We have been abroad this year. We can treat the kids. I feel very lucky.

but thanks for letting me know how poor I actually am.

Aposterhasnoname · 17/09/2023 19:42

This, right here, is why we are in a situation where people genuinely needing help are reviled. Because there’s people like this on 70 grand, asking all wide eyed if they are “poor”.

I’m embarrassed for you OP, really, get a fucking clue.

Figgygal · 17/09/2023 19:47

Jesus wept you've a huge household income and feel poor because you don't waste your money on shite like your image obsessed friends
Give yourself a shake op some people in this country can't feed or clothe their kids

Querypost · 17/09/2023 19:53

You must be a fuckin' idiot. You know there are scores of people who's household income is WAY lower? Are you just trying to piss people off?

SheilaWilde · 17/09/2023 19:54

Comparison is the thief of joy. You can't really think that a household income of 82k makes you 'poor'.

BlueMongoose · 17/09/2023 19:56

Your DH is on vastly above the average income. Even your household income still is. Average household income last year was £32,300 (down 0.6% on the previous year). Average for the richest 20% of people was still 'only' £66,000 (up 1.6%).
For the poorest 20% it was £14,500- a lower figure than the previous year by 3.8% despite inflation going up a lot.
So the poor were getting less in the year ending April 2022 than the year ending April 2021, the average were getting a bit less, and the richest 20% were getting significantly more.
Source, ONS (Office for National Statistics, the official UK statistical service).

Sparkleshine21 · 17/09/2023 19:56

@Imamumgetmeoutofhere thats literally me at the moment! I take her on the bus to school as it’s a 40 min walk and she’s six so she can’t manage it, i then walk to work and back before school ends and get the bus home with her. If I don’t have my daughter with me, you best believe I’m walking everywhere to save money.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 17/09/2023 19:59

I’d class you as a piss taker. Did it make you feel good to announce your husband earns £70k and then ask in your little Minnie Mouse voice ‘ooh are we poor’? I’m sorry for you that you can’t appreciate your blessings.

Wanttobekind · 17/09/2023 19:59

Words fail me. Get a grip. Of course you’re not bloody poor. Read the fucking news and learn about reality.

Arniesleftleg · 17/09/2023 20:03

Based on your family income, we're poor. 😳

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 17/09/2023 20:05

A quick google tells me that average uk household disposable income is £32,300.
I would say you are well off with possibly rich friends.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 17/09/2023 20:06

@Sparkleshine21 it's just shit. People who haven't been there just don't understand. I wore holes through the bottom of my shoes but because I couldn't afford to replace them I put insoles in them and wore sandwich bags over me feet so they didn't get wet on bad days. I really do genuinely sympathise with those struggling as we have been there when our eldest was a baby. Income of £18,500 a year jointly and that included tax credits and child benefit (hence the walking an hour and a half each way to work and taping up old shoes).

I'm just so thankful every day to not be in that situation any more. It's been a long hard struggle and we have had to sacrifice a lot. We are not wealthy by any stretch and our outgoings are rather high due to mortgage costs and one of the highest council tax rates in the country but have a roof over our heads, food in our bellies, can put the heating on in winter and can afford to take the bus when the weather is bad / don't want to walk and to me that's worth so much more than cinema rooms, Turkey teeth and Botox like the OP is talking about

Missmarplesknittingbuddy · 17/09/2023 20:06

Whether this is a genuine post or not I am truly embarrassed for you Op .

missmollygreen · 17/09/2023 20:08

Abbimae · 17/09/2023 19:37

£70k household income? Is this a joke or

90k household income, 70k is just the husbands pay.

Some people are truly out of touch with reality

UsingChangeofName · 17/09/2023 20:09

The very fact that one of the adults must be paying tax at the higher rate ought to be a bit of a clue Hmm

I don't suppose @FutureMrsBourne is coming back though ?
