In a supermarket and heard a middle aged woman say 'OH! You've got back off your holibobs then!?'

What is wrong with saying 'holiday'? I actually cringed when I heard it.

Feel free to add your own...

"Owner not Breed" if I see it ONE MORE FUCKING TIME I'm going to scream! 🥱😤

Yes! I'm glad it's not just me!

"gift" as a verb always comes up on these threads.

It was in common usage 400 years ago and seems to have found favour again in recent years. Probably because the English used in the US (where "gift" as a verb is more common) hasn't been modified as much as the English we now use in the UK.

All these Americanisms creeping in . Saying line instead of queue , saying gotten , calling a car park a parking lot. Etc .

Fruitynutcase · 17/09/2023 10:14

Maybe not used as much now but Frocks, and Slacks.

Also why is everyone talking about bloody movies? It's going to the cinema or watching a film. Paychecks/cheques? Ridiculous as well.

Gotten is old English that British English speakers have changed over time, whilst US English speakers haven't.

"Lot" meaning plot of land comes from old German, through old English, and likewise was taken to America where it stayed, while British English changed.

Excited - everybody's so excited except that we're not
Off of (not just off)
Park up/pack lunch/pack up.... when did people stop parking and taking a packed lunch

Or even worse the 'excited for' idiocy, when 'excited about' is meant. Yes to all the others. I wish people would say from instead of off of/of. As in I've just got back from my holidays.

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 17/09/2023 10:27

@Fruitynutcase
"Queue" was first used to mean "line of people" in the 1830s whereas "line" has been in use since the 15th century.
So, again, as usual when people on here think "Americanism= bad", it's actually "Americanism= the original meaning and usage of the word not subsequently adapted and modernised by British English speakers".

Stupendousseptember · 17/09/2023 10:30

@alibongo5

Is that like "within their gift *

IsleOfPenguinBollards · 17/09/2023 10:32

Lil instead of little 🤮

Completely agree. It’s cute when said by a toddler, but vomit-inducing when written by an adult.

I also agree with “Karen”. I think it had a specific meaning at first, but now it’s used by men to shut down any woman who complains about anything, ever.

Raging

No one I know in real life has ever used that word. It's usually angry or furious.

Only on Mumsnet is anyone raging.

Quite common where I live in Scotland.

dextersontopofhiskennel · 17/09/2023 10:38

Unalived.

Because apparently the word 'killed' is triggering. This one is mostly used by those people who engage in psychobabble.

WTAF??????

AllMyExesWearRolexes · 17/09/2023 10:43

"Call out" drives me demented (because I don't know how to spell "skitzy"),
"Curated" outside of a museum,
"So" at the start of the sentence,
"Shop" as a verb,
"This one",
"Like",
"Literally",
"Inbox me",
"Myself / yourself" used incorrectly,
"Fur baby",
"Squaddie", always used pejoratively,
Any of the drivel used in DM fashion reporting "stepped out", "teamed with", "showcased her endless pins", "tresses", "a smoky eye & a nude lip" - anyone writing that should have a black eye & a fat lip,
"Welcomed" for "gave birth to".

Jesus, that feels better!

wednamenov · 17/09/2023 10:43
  • Bun in the oven
  • Up the spout

Still reeling from being on the receiving end of stuff like this when I was pregnant.

Rosebud21 · 17/09/2023 10:46

Beautiful when used with breath. I did a yoga class yesterday with an instructor I hadn't met before. I don't mind either of these worlds on their own but being asked to "take a beautiful breath", repeatedly, in a one hour class, drove me nuts, & breathe 😂

Willmafrockfit · 17/09/2023 10:48

agree with So at the start of the sentence
someone does a video call to the whole company on a monthly basis, and this is how she talks!
so, it is awful

HerMammy · 17/09/2023 10:49

'I say this gently' popular here on MN or OP post some arsehole opinion and ends with 'please be gentle'

Coastalcreeksider · 17/09/2023 11:02

Know what I mean

After every sentence. Used a lot by the Gallagher brothers in interviews.

Makes my teeth grind

Friths · 17/09/2023 11:11

Excited for. No you're not.
Evening meal. Why not dinner?
In this moment in time. You mean now?
As to. Why use two words when one will usually do?
Gift or birth as verbs. Just no.
Journey, unless actual travel is involved.

So many more ...

nottoday300 · 17/09/2023 11:27

Blue lighted - sorry just irritates me

Defiantjazz · 17/09/2023 11:42

Pop (as in pop in the oven, pop to the shops etc. Gives me the absolute rage for reasons I can’t explain)
Little one
Cheeky (as in a cheeky glass of wine or whatever, just why? - you’re not a teenager smoking behind the bike sheds ffs)
Folk (MN is to blame for this one. There are no people here, only folk)
Poorly
Tummy or (worse Tum 🤬)
Starting your sentence's with the word “see”
And worse of all “dropped” to mean released, as in “their new album had been released dropped”. It irritates me SO MUCH.

Purplebunnie · 17/09/2023 11:48

24/7 - just hate it.

Defiantjazz · 17/09/2023 11:56

Oh, and veggies.
I’m also extremely a bit annoyed by yeh instead of yeah 😬
