Just on the news - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-66817795

Week after week, there is something wrong with dogs (and the owners) today, I grew up with them and this never, ever happened. Maybe because dogs were treated as dogs and not trophy animals. Awful for everyone.

Crime scene

Man attacked by two dogs near school in Stonnall dies

A man suffers fatal injuries when attacked by two dogs in a street near a school in Staffordshire.

I don't really care what dog owners want. I want to be able to walk, let my kids play at the park without stepping in shit. I want my child to not have snacks stolen from his hand by "friendly little dogs". Your wants don't trump mine.
And, no, you were not polite.

Your wants don't trump other people's wants either.

Public spaces are just that - public. That means people have to share the space with elderly people, children, dog walkers, cyclists, kite flyers, footballers, joggers. Nobody trumps anybody.

Is this a plan to eliminate the domestic dog species from the UK? Cos if you neuter them all then not sure where you think puppies are going to come from?

Pet owners should not be allowed to breed their animals. It's a preposterous situation currently where shelters are flooded with animals, left there to rot. It's absolute animal cruelty.

Anyone who actually cares about animal welfare has to agree.

If all pets were neutered and breeders were strictly licensed then dog ownership could be regulated.

There are far too many dogs in the U.K. I have an old dog but I would never get another.

Needs trump wants. I don't give a flying fuck what any down owner "wants". I need to be able to walk the streets safely. As do we all. And our children.

So is it ok if I go to the park with a machete ?

Do other people’s needs trump my need to bring something potentially dangerous to the park ?

Needs != wants, to put it another way ...

NOT ONE BUT TWO PRIOR INCIDENTS/WARNINGS THAT WE KNOW OF!!!! ……. and still not muzzled!!!
Certain breeds should be muzzled when out.
exclusions zones where no dogs are allowed! - stop allowing dogs into shopping centres, cafes, at school gates etc…. No dogs at festivals/carnivals (places packed with people).. except assistance dogs!

Conkersinautumn · 17/09/2023 10:30

Modern life does not suit dog ownership at all. It's cruel to keep animals in massively restricted lifestyles, dogs get very lonely and aggressive and less than half get anything like adequate exercise. Most dog walkers are too busy with their phones to be aware of what their dog is doing when out and about.

Change the wording then, there should be areas that are pedestrianised …. No dogs allowed!
fir the public safety we already have areas where people aren’t allowed to ride motorised vehicles, drink alcohol etc…. Excluding dogs isn’t that big a deal…. There are plenty of areas to walk dogs away from shopping centres, and school gates .

Thanks @CBAanymoreTBH. We need more info on how to protect ourselves from dogs.

That's how I felt so I researched it. I read it attached stay on your feet if possible...give the dog a rucksack if it lunges at you or if necessary your left arm. Push into the attack nor pull away and of it has a collar lift it and twist.

Sounds completely infeasible if you are the one being attacked. Otherwise try to gouge it's eyes with a key. If you're a fisherman for example and have a knife, cut under its ear. Apparently you have to go for it with the understanding it's kill or be killed.

I know this sounds nuts but it isn't. These powerful breeds will kill.

CBAanymoreTBH · 17/09/2023 10:36

Apologies I can't edit my post pls excuse typos

CBAanymoreTBH · 17/09/2023 10:41

If I sound nuts it's because I had to climb on a car roof in a car park after an XL got out a car window. This was months ago and It ran at me. I blocked it with a trolley and climbed on the roof. It trotted away but I was too terrified to get down. Honestly I felt like a complete tit.

This was months ago and I became phobic for a while even though I wasn't attacked. I read up on all this and it made me feel a little better but still ludicrous I've got to consider it at all.

It should really become as it did with smoking. 1970 you had to ask (and may not have gotten) for a non smoking table in a restaurant. Then it slowly reversed until you had to ask for a smoking table as smoking was (like dog ownership) the minority. Pandering to pooches should be the exception, not the norm.

Problem is with all the will in the world this guy couldn’t have fought off TWO bully dogs.
yes we need to know how to defend ourselves, but the issue is irresponsible dog ownership… This dog owner had been warned previously TWICE… plus god knows how many times these dogs had been threatening and not reported. Yet he still took it to a public place… near a school at kicking out time! After the first incident these dogs should’ve been muzzled and walked in secluded areas. If they were my dogs they’d have been muzzled immediately after the first incident…. If not PTS

Topazmumma · 17/09/2023 10:45

Seriously, on what planet would you think this is a sensible response?!? More guns and knives = more people being injured and killed! PEOPLE! The issue isn't with the dogs, it's with the backyard breeders making a shit load of money, and irresponsible owners who buy these animals to look hard with no knowledge of how, or inclination to learn how to train them! These articles make me furious!

DON'T. PUNISH. THE. DOGS. PUNISH. THE. PEOPLE. LETTING. THEM. DOWN.

The intention isn't to punish the dogs. It's to save people's lives and to prevent others having the most hideous death imaginable. 1 death is too much.

God you poor thing. You did the right thing though

If I saw one running as that one did at the 11 year old girl I’d hope to find some where safe

It is madness it happens

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 17/09/2023 10:50

I am a dog owner, if I had to use a muzzle on my dog to go out to save a death from an xl bully, then I would do that. Surely any decent person would. Its a no brainer.

SerendipityJane · 17/09/2023 10:50

1 death is too much.

There is a school of thought that one death is a tragedy, but 10 a statistic. Certainly explains why there hasn't really been any urgency from the government. Not when there are more pressing things to look at.

You did right to get on the roof under the circumstances.

Looking at some of those videos it would be very difficult even for a well trained soldier with a knife to take an XL Bully out. Through a combination of natural instinct and training they aim for the throat. The dog's killing method is to reach the carotid artery and jugular vein, clamp down and shake so violently that these vessels get severed. Not a nice way to go from all accounts because it is a very painful process. On some videos you can see these dogs are capable of leaping up 6ft so one jump and they can get to a persons throat. This is what they have been trained for. A rucksack might appease a greedy terrier, but these dogs only have one aim. If you get near enough to gouge its eyes or cut under its ear, its jaw's are near enough to get your throat. Escape is the only option because carrying knives or guns gets 5 years in prison.

3 men as well as the victim were trying to fight those dogs off. If they had known to choke them it may have helped.

Also the muzzles wouldn't have helped. They escaped the owners house to attack the victim. Those dogs should have been destroyed after previous incidents.

CBAanymoreTBH · 17/09/2023 10:56

There are at least 3 of these dogs regularly on the school run near my local primary. Maybe this needs looking at. Any dog on a school run is unnecessary in my opinion. Dog shit & some kids are scared of any dog at all. They have to pass by a whole railing full of dogs tied up at drop off and pick up.

Punishing the breeders and irresponsible owners is a given. But so to is eradicating XL Bullies and other dangerous breeds.

Imagine ending a war by putting the war criminals and arms dealers behind bars, but leaving all the landmines behind to go off at random. That would be negligent.
