Just on the news - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-66817795

Week after week, there is something wrong with dogs (and the owners) today, I grew up with them and this never, ever happened. Maybe because dogs were treated as dogs and not trophy animals. Awful for everyone.

Crime scene

Man attacked by two dogs near school in Stonnall dies

A man suffers fatal injuries when attacked by two dogs in a street near a school in Staffordshire.

@VeterinaryCareAssistant You wouldn’t think so from the amount of posts on mn at the moment.

News has been updated today regarding XL’s they’ll have to be neutered/spayed, kept on a lead and muzzled when out in public and insured. There won’t be a mass cull.

So pretty pointless then, Just hot air.

Attacks in the home/private land will continue and no one to enforce anything at all.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 17/09/2023 08:35

Sorry @Missingmyusername you lost me, I wouldn't think so, what?

I prefer not to face them in public without a muzzle and lead though

Especially my dc, who won’t see them in anyone’s home

ArabellaDinosaur · 17/09/2023 08:46

@Missingmyusername im not so sure a big country pub near us on a dog walking route won’t allow them inside now, I think they stopped nearly a yr ago.

And I realised last week that a cafe which I’m surprised about as it was always full of hipsters and cockapoos is now dogs outside only.

So either something specific has happened (not heard) or they have realised it’s not quite so lucrative.

Which views would those be? Objecting to the dog shit that cakes every park and pavement? Objecting to the people being mauled to death? Objecting to the thousands of dogs languishing in shelters?
What do you have against sensible regulations?
Or are you not really a "dog lover" and just you and your dog and the most important things ever?

The view that every dog breed should be muzzled.

What's that to do with animals in dog shelters.

I was only arguing the fact my beagle won't ever be muzzled.

Oliotya · 17/09/2023 08:16

Oh yeah, and the poster I was responding to was being lovely and polite of course

I was. I was expressing what most dog owners want. Not to have their dogs muzzled.

Tiredofdogs · 17/09/2023 09:34

Many times I’ve been out walking dogs run up and jump on me. I’m really sick of it and the owners always say “don’t worry they are friendly”.
Some of them are big and could potentially knock someone down - I’m quite sturdy but my child is not- he is very slight and short for his age.
How can I successfully get the dog to back off if the owner is not in control of their dog? How do you get a dog off someone if it decides to attack them?
It is alarming reading about these dog attacks and some of the advice I’ve read says that you should carry dog treats on your walks to distract a dog. Well I refuse to buy and carry treats for someone else’s out of control dog.
What I’d really like to know is how can I kill a dog if it poses a threat to me or my child? How can we defend ourselves against these animals ? I have no qualms about taking a dogs life if it is threatening a humans life or potentially scarring it for life so how do I do it?

Tiredofdogs · 17/09/2023 09:36

I was knocked down as a child by a staff or and because I was then lying on the floor it started to growl and try to get hold of my neck. I was in the dogs garden and the owner had gone to the toilet in the house. The owner came then and pulled it off saying it was playing but it didn’t feel like that as a small 9 year old on the ground with a heavy dog on top of it.

All dogs should be muzzled simply to eliminate the need to monitor and enforce size, weight, and breed exemptions. My opinion. You're entitled to yours.

I don't really care what dog owners want. I want to be able to walk, let my kids play at the park without stepping in shit. I want my child to not have snacks stolen from his hand by "friendly little dogs". Your wants don't trump mine.
And, no, you were not polite.

Either the government needs to remove dogs from private ownership or train the public in how to fight them off. Dogs are now a weapon rather than a pet so we need to be able to defend against them accordingly. I'd like to see the laws relaxed so we can carry guns to use on dogs (only farmers really have the right and ability to shoot dogs at the moment) or at least carry knives. It wouldn't stop all dog attacks but carrying a "dog knife" and being trained in how to kill a dog would stop some attacks definitely.

The effective way (and I've researched) is to choke them out. A lot of people who fear loose dogs whilst waking their own, carry a spare slip lead to either restrain or choke if needed.

Americans right now in impoverished areas rely on their guns to protect themselves against loose pits. The daily deaths & attacks are staggering. To be honest if the rise in dog attacks continues on the same trajectory we should at least be thinking avoid having pepper spray...Americans use bear spray.

CBAanymoreTBH · 17/09/2023 09:53

Bramblecrumble22 · 15/09/2023 11:25

Absolutely nuts, stabbing a dog would unlikely be safer, probably make it more vicious... but teaching to stand like a tree, don't run, back off slowly, use a loud but firm voice but not scream could help. But really dogs are the problem.

If you were in the position of those men trying to save the most recent victim, the only way would be to choke the dog or cut its jugular. 3 men were whacking the dogs with poles & bricks to no avail.

There have been several U.K. attacks in the home and the owners had to use a knife against their dog.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 17/09/2023 09:58

If we’re saying it’s not the breed it’s the owner, and we’re saying no to muzzles, then we should lift the ban on carrying knives with a blade longer than 3 inches.

Because the principle is the same right ? It’s not the knife it’s the owner. Potentially dangerous and potentially lethal “things” are welcome on our streets apparently. And the people who will be irresponsible with these dangerous things are apparently an underclass who won’t follow rules anyway apparently.

So either treat these dogs like dangerous knives or legalise dangerous knives - because the principle is exactly the same.

My friend is one of the people on Facebook sharing photos of her xl bully with her kids and going on about how soft she is. Couldn’t be further from the truth… She’s been pulling her hair out with it’s behaviour ever since she’s had it it’s been a nightmare, utterly hyper and wrecking furniture etc. So I don’t buy into all these posts to be honest.

This is the photo the owner of the dogs who killed the man recently had shared on their social media

Another dog attack, man killed, can this just go on?
Greeneyedminx · 17/09/2023 10:00

The only way forward is for every single dog, regardless of breed or size, to be muzzled if outside and to be always walked on a lead.
That way, there is no doubt on what breed people say their dog is, as it won’t matter the same if it’s muzzled.
Stop allowing dogs in shops and cafes and pubs, so that people can remain safe without worrying about dogs coming up to them.
Stop putting dogs above people and put them back in the correct pecking order, dogs do not matter more than children and adults.

Again, it won't happen.

Will agree to disagree.

You don't like dogs but unfortunely in your lifetime people will be having them as pets.

Not all dog owners leave dog poo or let their dogs run wild. I've walked by children and the only time a child touches them is if the older child or young child's parent has asked if they can pet them. Beagles tend to attract children because they think they are cute.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 17/09/2023 10:01

@CBAanymoreTBH maybe the dogs thought the man was a threat to the child.

Sometimes a trigger can be so subtle that nobody knows what actually causes an attack. One dog gets triggered the others join in.

The only effective way is to choke the dog out using a belt or even a bag strap. I watched footage of a dog attack in America, 3 men were trying to save someone using sticks, shovel and kicking them. An older woman got out her car with a load binding strap and choked it out.

I've also researched it and this is the only method that can help if nobody has a weapon to use on the dog.

I fully agree with this...as a dog owner. Dog owners wishes do not come into it. People are trying to live in a society...we do not want the risk of being mauled by someone's family pet.

Unlikely. Since the dogs escaped their owner's house and entered the victim's mother's garden through a hedge where they attacked him.

So there's been 10 deaths in 2 years. This means statistically 8 more in 18 months. Probably more since XL's for sale are flooding the market and as well as this the impending legislation will see many problem dogs being handed on to someone else, causing more instability in the dog.

Having acknowledged the problem, I think any further attacks/fatalities then the government will be squarely culpable.

Shadowchaser · 17/09/2023 10:18

Not sure where your defending the behaviour of these people and dogs @VeterinaryCareAssistant

I work in veterinary and have a Ma in behaviour. There’s no excuse to buy, breed from or own dogs descended from animals that show aggression to animals or people, as it proven in almost all of the foundation dogs used to create the XL. Ignorance is not an excuse, I have no sympathy for the owners at all, why did they not research what they were buying? Or maybe they did and don’t care about anyone but themselves.

There’s no excuse to buy crossbreed mutants on gumtree or whatever other rubbish platform exists for the people who throw these dogs together with no thought for anything but money. Absolutely not one excuse.
