Just on the news - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-66817795

Week after week, there is something wrong with dogs (and the owners) today, I grew up with them and this never, ever happened. Maybe because dogs were treated as dogs and not trophy animals. Awful for everyone.

Crime scene

Man attacked by two dogs near school in Stonnall dies

A man suffers fatal injuries when attacked by two dogs in a street near a school in Staffordshire.

I'm not sure there is one simple solution or answer to preventing these dog attacks, I suspect the issue needs a number of solutions. Even then it is unlikely that we will be able to eradicate dog attacks completely but equally doing nothing is not the answer.

I'm a dog lover, primarily of larger breeds. I've grown up with and owned many different large breeds all my life, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Dogue de Bordeaux, Mastiffs, Boxers, German Shepherds and until recently an American Bulldog. Myself and my family consider ourselves to be experienced and responsible dog owners. We spent a lot of time socialising and training our dogs and fortunately none of our dogs has ever shown aggression, either towards another dog or a person. However, we have never claimed to trust our dogs 100%. In certain situations we are extremely aware that they could very well become aggressive and because of their size, the damage they could do to another dog or person could be fatal. For that reason we never walked our dogs off lead and we muzzled them when out in public. The dogs were never left unattended with younger members of the family and we also crate trained all our dogs.

I personally would welcome greater regulations on dog ownership and breeding if it meant that it would reduce the risk of any dog ending up in the hands of an irresponsible owner who just wanted a status symbol or were simply not experienced enough to know how to train, control or properly care for a dog. I don't consider it my right to own a dog, for me it is a privilege.

Man killed now named. This is a very chilling account. The dogs had previous form. So unnecessary.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-66817795

The police had already been called and spoken to the owner twice about the dogs. Removing dogs sooner, at earlier signs of aggression, should be normal.

As a dog owner, I would be fine with that and would absolutely obey such a law. I'm willing to bet the tossers with aggressive trophy dogs would not, mind

Certainly any dog that has killed anybody in the last twenty years. Absolutely.
So Pitbull, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Bulldogs etc.
Its not rocket science - the above are strong, dangerous animals. It’s akin to walking a trained lion.

That would also include border collies, Jack Russells and dachshunds, amongst others.

Kefaline · 15/09/2023 20:55

Yes the authorities completely failed to protect the general public here as these dogs should have been long dead prior to this attack. They should be ashamed that they didn't act earlier.

I like a PP have owned big breeds, GSDs, Rottweilers. Since the bottom feeding class of the UK cannot be trusted to be responsible, something serious needs to happen. Simply Banning XL bullies won't work because the bottom feeders will just get another breed.

Restricted ownership going as far as banning all council and social housing dog ownership is a good place to start. Owning a dog doesn't trump the rights of innocent people to feel safe.

Apparently there's a CoL crisis yet these horrible dogs are everywhere and mainly in the most deprived areas. They cost a bloody fortune and often sold on breeding terms to keep the lines going and earn the shitty breeder even more money. Absolute scum. If they're not breeding child killing monsters they're dealing drugs. What a shitty race humans are.

I’ve told this elsewhere before but last year I met two young men, on separate occasions, who had X Bullies. I was at the bus stop with one and I asked him if he was taking his puppy to a training class. He wasn’t going to. No idea how to handle a dog, never had one before. Another lad at the vet had one with cropped ears. Again, no idea how to look after the dog and not going to do any training. Cropping ears is illegal yet happening. Vets should be obliged to report that. I worry about both of these dogs, cute puppies but will grow into massive dogs with no training.

People are importing dogs with cropped ears from countries where it's still legal. And, some people are literally scummy and will do it themselves.

The Kept Animals Bill included legislation to ban the importation of cropped eared dogs but it got rejected by Parliament.

Vets can report owners of cropped and/or docked dogs to Trading Standards but nothing ever seems to happen.

Scotsgirl001 · 15/09/2023 21:02

I agree with that poster. Terriers are terrible. I’ve never met a friendly one, grumpy wee shites the lot of them (jokes, maybe) 😂

izimbra · 15/09/2023 21:08

FWIW - more people have been hospitalised or killed by cows in the UK in the past few years than by dogs, let alone by XL bullies.

Moonwatcher1234 · 15/09/2023 13:31

And? If you aren’t able to meet these animals very demanding physical needs which results in aggression and risk to others then don’t have one. It’s not a human right is it. Just get a toy poodle or a cat.

And what are the demanding physical needs of those breeds I've mentioned? None of those breeds need anything particularly demanding.

Either the government needs to remove dogs from private ownership or train the public in how to fight them off. Dogs are now a weapon rather than a pet so we need to be able to defend against them accordingly. I'd like to see the laws relaxed so we can carry guns to use on dogs (only farmers really have the right and ability to shoot dogs at the moment) or at least carry knives. It wouldn't stop all dog attacks but carrying a "dog knife" and being trained in how to kill a dog would stop some attacks definitely.

I'm so ready to train for dog killing. I'm dodging shit every other step on the school run.

Get in the ring and start small. Twat a spaniel or something then work your way up. Final boss fight: a fully swole XL Bullyfucker called “CHAD”

Fuckingfuming1 · 15/09/2023 11:28

I read somewhere that makes people who carry knives and up with it being used against them, or they fall on it and injure themselves sometimes fatally so that sounds like an extremely bad plan. Also do we give a knife to the three and four-year-olds that seem to be the dogs favourite snack.

Realistically the children will need guns. They have no chance against a large dog, even with a big knife and training.

I quite understand cows having a beef with humans, given what we do to them.

GettingOldWithoutStyle · 15/09/2023 21:32

Having watched a 'playful' as the owner describe it, dog jump and bark all over my 3 and 5 yo who didn't even try to go near it, I would also support muzzling. My kids were hysterical. I'd have loved to have kicked the sodding thing that looked like it was ready to bite whatever it could get hold of, but obviously that would mean I would have been cruel or whatever. The fact is I was genuinely worried for their safety, my kids are now terrified and the owner mumbled something about the dog just being being playful and excitable. Awful. I hate dogs. Don't trust any of them and have told my kids explicitly to steer clear. 100% agree we are now paying for living in some stupid 'dog friendly' bubble, they should not be in cafes, children's parks etc etc

Ive started to develop a bit of anxiety when I'm out walking my wee spaniel, especially in wooded areas etc where lots of people have their dogs off leads. He's very timid, and I'm always on edge that we will come across an XL bully or similar not on a lead and the owner has no control. In fact its not just that breed, its any breed of dog, owners always say ' dont worry he/she is friendly' as it/they come towards us but sadly from experience thats not always the case. Ive been thinking about getting some kind of pepper spray type thing to carry with me. Its annoying that I should feel vulnerable doing something as pleasurable as walking my dog.

I carry this. My boy has never been off lead and we’ve been attacked multiple times, once quite seriously which resulted in police involvement.

The pair of you sounding fucking insane. Neither of you have anything to add to a discussion about reducing dog attacks, fatal or otherwise. We need effective policy which regulates dog ownership to prevent people being injured or killed and to improve animal welfare.

Rinoachicken · 15/09/2023 21:45

The average number of people killed by cows in the UK is around 3-5 per year.

Last year, there were 10 people killed by dogs (according to the BBC)

@izimbra really?

Regardless I'm not very likely to get hurt by a cow in the park, walking to the shop etc

billysillydilly · 15/09/2023 21:49

@Rinoachicken as I thought

Scotsgirl001 · 15/09/2023 21:50

I hate cows. I don't cross a field with cows. I hate dogs, I would like to not cross an area with dogs. But unfortunately there aren't any dog free routes to town

Passingplace · 15/09/2023 22:08

I generally find it easier to avoid cows than dogs.

Restricted ownership going as far as banning all council and social housing dog ownership is a good place to start. Owning a dog doesn't trump the rights of innocent people to feel safe.

I live in council housing, I have a large dog 🐕 ( not bully), I work, I'm a middle-aged mother, and I spend my weekend out doing classes with my dog. She is walked regularly, I hire fields, she sees vets as necessary, is vaccinated, chipped, insured, and is a happy, well-balanced dog.
Social housing is like hens teeth these days. I'd wager its not only SH tenants.

The problem is the failure to deal with gangs, drugs, anti social families,( most round me are owners), revolving door of justice systems. We know perfectly well that the owners of these dogs aren't the ones with insurance, trainers on speed dial, and field hire numbers in their phone. Until the breeders and scummy owners are dealt with, the rest is pure 'horse has bolted' territory.

Timeforchangeithink · 15/09/2023 22:25

@Kefaline" Restricted ownership going as far as banning all council and social housing dog ownership is a good place to start".
So......only home owners would be permitted to own dogs then?
