It makes my blood boil! They drive their big childcrushers whilst on the phone, they tailgate other smaller cars, they use enormous amounts of petrol, they block up roads, they look threatening...how can people choose to drive something like that? Do they have ha a selfish gene, do they think they are just better than other people so rules don't apply to them, or are they just thick?

(NOTE this is only about town drivers, i appreciate that they are useful in the countryside).

Sometimes, I think Jeremy Clarkson is winning.

I don't mean to patronise anyone - but..........

Please have a look here at the NCAP website.

My X5 has a better pedestrian safety rating than .... say an Audi A3 ..... but you wouldn't bitch on about that would you??

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!?????

Would be nice if people weren't so ignorant perhaps?
And a tad less judgemental?

Joolyjoolyjoo · 03/03/2008 23:44

I'm sorry DKMA- I'm sure you are a perfectly nice person, just BMWs provoke a knee-jerk reaction in me! I find it hard to believe that people will spend so much money on a car! Especially when they depreciate so quickly! I always therefore assume (probably wrongly!) that they are making a statement about having tens of thousands of pounds to throw away! Which IS a bit crass! Maybe to people who are true car enthusiasts they are worth all that, but for me getting from A to B, in a car which quickly fills up with mud/ litter/ dog hair doesn't merit that amount of expenditure! Not meaning to be judgemental, but surely you choose a car like that to say something about yourself? To me, that's what it says.

Scramble · 03/03/2008 23:47

Yawn!!!

DKMA · 03/03/2008 23:52

It's a company car - thanks - and not everyone defines themselves by the car they drive like you perhaps do?

Youcannotbeserious · 03/03/2008 23:56

oh dear, JJJ. You wouldn't like my family much then.

We have 3 cars, my 'main' car is a BMW estate which I use for the sole purpose of ferrying my dog around.

Will soon have DS to ferry around too, so perhaps you will like me a bit more then

I have no idea how little you must have in your life to spend so much time wondering why complete strangers drive the cars they do...

Youcannotbeserious · 03/03/2008 23:58

Oh, and I don't clean my car. I park in the valet spots in car parks and have someone clean it for me.

bet you really hate me now!!!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 04/03/2008 00:03

God, I hope I don't define myself by my car- its falling to bits! I don't spend all that much time pondering it, just happen to drive past a BMW showroom on my way home and gasp at the prices! Just out of interest, then, why did you choose the car? Or did you have no say? Does that mean if it WASN'T a company car, you wouldn't choose it? I'm not being funny- I am genuinely curious!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 04/03/2008 00:04

Be assured, I may make assumptions about people, based on their choice of car, but it certainly doesn't matter enough to me to HATE anyone about it!!

Scramble · 04/03/2008 00:06

Mine is held together with cable ties, my next vehicle will probably be a transit van, wonder what that says about me .

Tortington · 04/03/2008 00:07

youcannotbeserious

youhave a car............for your dog.

consider yourself judged.

Youcannotbeserious · 04/03/2008 00:09

Exactly, JJJ... That's what I don't get.... You'd probably be reasonably offended if someone said that they thought people who drove 'your-sort-of-car' were cheap chavs or something, wouldn't you?

For me, I drive the car because it's safe, reliable, large, comfy, fits us all in when needed, got the extras I like to have, paid for and happened to be my DH's old work car so we've had it since new....

I could change it for a new X3 or X5, but I'm quite happy with it, it runs well and looks good.

Scramble · 04/03/2008 00:12

Perhaps I will buy a double decker bus for the school run, or a tank nah feck it a hummer nah strtch hummer. are 4x4's less offesvie if they are dirty, buy soem spray on muck and pretend you are just off the fields.

I miss my 4x4 it was fab

Youcannotbeserious · 04/03/2008 00:12

Well, Custardo, I do use it for work too....

But, yes, I have an estate car so the dog has enough room on the back seats... he doesn't like sitting in the boot...

Ah.... hell... I deserve to be judged!!!!

DKMA · 04/03/2008 00:12

I chose it because I love the drive of it, it has a 5 star NCAP safety rating (Just checked that) it has fab MPG (better than many average cars) and I off road everyday, and do thousands of miles every month on the motorway for work.
Plus I have loads of boot space for work boxes and pushchair and horse crap that I ferry about.
If it wasn't a company car I couldn't afford the £40+k it costs - but as I get a monthly allowance and it is on fleet plan - I can have it.
And that's it!

So JJJ - if you don't define yourself by your car - then why do you think I would???
It's a car ffs!!!

YCNBS - I think you're cool!!

Tortington · 04/03/2008 00:12

vulgar dear, v. vulgar.

there are such things as taste, modesty and class and you seem woefully bereft of all.

Scramble · 04/03/2008 00:13

Heehee

Joolyjoolyjoo · 04/03/2008 00:14

I don't really like my car-its an older zafira, but with 3 kids, inlaws and dogs it was the practical choice. We also have a 10 yr old toyota that DH takes to work or I take if I am lucky enough to escape out without the entourage. He was the first car I bought myself and I love him! I would be quite happy to have people judge me on it, as I am an inverted snob! It says that I don't care about what I drive, which is true. if that makes me a chav in someone's book so be it!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 04/03/2008 00:19

Still don't get why people (even companies) would spend £40k+ on a car!! That's an extension on my house and a holiday in the Bahamas! Or some serious investment! Of course it's just a car, but it could be so much more!

DKMA · 04/03/2008 00:19

Oh dear JJJ

According to the NCAP people - your car is an even worse 'Childcrusher' than mine.

See here

Than tells me - yes you don't care what you drive - but also - you don't care about the safety of pedestrians! Where as I in my 4x4 at least score one point!

Tbh - I couldn't give a shit - I'm just proving a point!

Tortington · 04/03/2008 00:20

the old " i kill less people than you" safety point.

DKMA · 04/03/2008 00:22

To all you lot pointing the big finger...........Look up what car you drive on NCAP and come back and report what the pedestrian safety rating is!

I'm guessing most of you are blowing hot air out of your ass on this one!

Did I miss something?? I've never crushed any pedestrians as far as I know!

Ok, you can have your point! I'll just be happy to be £40000 better off!

OK, JJJ... I need to get this straight:

Old Zafira = Only have because of excess 'baggage'... (I am not sure who makes these cars, but I am sure this wasn't the message they were hoping to convey)

10YO Toyota = Inverted snob who doesn't care about image (I'm sure Toyota will be SOOO pleased to know that this is the outcome from the millions they spend on advetising and marketing each year!)

BMW = Aspirational car which will make Toyota drivers think you have loads of money (Actually, I think BMW WILL be quite pleased at the outcome of their advertising / marketing campaign!!)

Yep, I'm sticking with the BMW!!

All flippancy aside, I actually DO agree with the OP that 4x4s can be bit agressive. I also drive an X5 and a mini and it's easy to forget how dominant the X5 can be... The full beams of a 4x4 can pretty much blind the driver of a mini!!!!
