Woken in hotel room

Dyinforaliein · 09/09/2023 12:01

Recently I went to stay in a hotel with two friends. We went to a show and stayed together in the room. My friends shared the double and had the single.

I haven't had a lie in in so long. I was looking forward to letting my hair down and waking up naturally because I have been burnt out lately.

After the show we went out for drinks and were back pretty late, about 3 or 4. I could not believe my ears when I was woken up at 9am. She was sitting up in the bed talking to her husband on the phone. It wasn't even a whisper, just a low volume. My other friend started stirring too, and that was it. We were all up. We had looked forward to this Weekend for ages so I decided to let it go.

If it was me and I wanted to ring my husband to check on the kids (I wouldn't, I would just text), I would have gone into the hallway outside the hotel room. I just don't get why she couldn't have walked a few metres to avoid risking waking us up.She was just sitting there on the bed talking on the phone!

I was so looking forward to having a night out with a nice uninterrupted sleep the next day and I can't stop thinking about it!

Would this have annoyed you?

i think sometimes even separate rooms doesn’t cut it and you have to be SUPER clear about what your intentions are. I’ve casually asked friends with younger children then mine ‘shall I knock and wake you for breakfast’ to be told every version of yes/no.
i think in your position I’d be miffed but I’d also have told them to chuff off or at least bring me a cup of tea in bed!

Twillow · 09/09/2023 16:21

You're overreacting.

LollipopChaos · 09/09/2023 16:24

Yes I would have been annoyed being woken up to someone on the phone regardless of what time it was. They should have gone outside! I am with you OP.

Lauren83 · 09/09/2023 16:45

I can't imagine 3 adults having a lie in in the same room, surely if someone went to the loo, had a shower or unlocked the door it may have woken both the others up anyway? Isn't check out usually about 10am-10.30am anyway?

TellingBone · 09/09/2023 16:46

I'd have been annoyed as well. If I was up but with two sleeping people in the room I'd tiptoe around. Rude.

Mind, with my friends I'd have told her to shut up FFS and my friend would have laughed, said sorry and complied. You should be able to talk straight to good mates.

HoneyPotts · 09/09/2023 16:47

What did she do when you told her move somewhere else to call her husband?

DP and I stayed in a hotel room last night for a long anticipated weekend away. Was so excited for a lie in.

6.15am DP's bastard alarm went off and it took me ages to locate the phone in the dark and switch it off. Couldn't get back to sleep.

That was annoying.

9am phone call is fine.

9am is not a lie in when you got in at 4am.

Very surprised at all the MNers who would seemingly happily get out of bed at 9am after a night of drinking and not getting back until 4am! If I'm away, especially without kids, no, I don't expect to have to get up at 9am.

Especially considering the posts we get about competitive leaving the kids to sort their own breakfast on a weekend threads we get. We seem to have MNers children who can change their own nappies and make their own breakfast from 2yo so their parents can lie in.

OP yanbu. Doesn't matter what time it is if you book a room to share with people you are considerate of those people.

Yes this would have annoyed me. I would have stayed quiet until everyone had woken up.

Sigmama · 09/09/2023 17:13

What was the conversation about?

Sigmama · 09/09/2023 17:14

Don't know who rang who, but they're both sound selfish and needy

StaunchMomma · 09/09/2023 17:16

I both agree and disagree with you, here.

Yes, it was rude of your friend to have a loud phone conversation while you were sleeping BUT it was after 9 and I also think it's rude to expect a lie in in a shared room as it would mean others tip-toeing around.

Separate rooms defo a better idea.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 09/09/2023 17:25

9am is not a reasonable time to wake up, or a lie in, if you've all got back to the room at 4am. Why is everyone ignoring the fact that its only 5 hours since you returned to the room?

RichardMarxisinnocent · 09/09/2023 17:25

No, it isn't. It is sometimes, but not in all hotels. And in this case it doesn't matter whay time check out is because THEY ARE STAYING ANOTHER NIGHT AND ARE NOT CHECKING OUT TODAY. At 9am it wouldn't have annoyed me. That's relatively late to wake up.

But the op and her friend were still sleeping? Why is it ok for the other friend to have decided that it was late enough?

OP, yes, it would have annoyed me. It's a basic lack of manners.

TheDuchessOfMN · 09/09/2023 17:37

9am would be a lie in for me. Don’t most hotels only serve breakfast until 10?

LovesJaffaCakes · 09/09/2023 17:39

I just think it's pretty weird that 3 women (who must be late 20s or older?) shared a double bed, and 1 in a single bed in one room.
Was this a family room? (the clue is in the name.)

Why on earth did you all choose to do that @Dyinforaliein ? To save money?

Does the hotel actually allow 3 adults in 1 room? Usually 3-beds are two parents and a child.

Would you still consider 9am to be a lie in if you'd only gone to bed at 4am? What if you went to bed at 11pm - would you consider 4am to be a lie in?

Lots of hotels have later breakfast at the weekend, often till 11am. However that doesn't matter in this situation because the OP and her friends were not planning to have the hotel breakfast.

Maybe OP is like me, can't sleep in no matter what time they went to bed. I'd be having an afternoon nap personally.

Ozziedream · 09/09/2023 18:03

If you wanted an undisturbed sleep / lie in, get your own room.

What did you say when she groaned at you?

Is your friend alway that much of a bitch to you?

You don't stay in many hotels do you?

I'm a woman in my 30s who goes away with friends and has shared a bed on more than a few occasions. Sometimes they oversell on twin rooms, sometimes house keeping accidentally ziplink the beds and you are too busy/it's too late to fanny on separating them, sometimes it's because it's the only config the room can have etc etc.

Regardless, families consist of more than just adults and children. A family room is just a larger room with capacity for more beds.
