Walt Disney world florida or Disney in general

yes it’s expensive and it’s not for everyone but if you went as a child and have fond memories then you’ve got nostalgia or if you / your kids like the movies then It seems great.

im taking my kids, will be 5 and nearly 3 but flip me, people are so weird about it. So so so weird. I don’t know most people if they don’t ‘rate’ a holiday destination normally give a oh nice, or a minimal response but I met up with a wider group of friends the other day, so friends of friends, talking about hols and stuff, I got ‘oh gross, sorry to hear that hahaha’ and ‘my idea of hell’ and ‘waste of money’. I don’t know, I’d never crap on someone’s holiday that they were clearly excited about.

if you hunt around, like I did you can get an amazing deal that’s frankly cheaper than 1 week in Zante.

I only know 2 families who have been and they have been many times. The families don't know each other AFAIK but they seem to have the same attitude to life (jolly) and same hobbies.

Embarrassednamechangeadoddle · 08/09/2023 14:10

I mean Disney is absolutely not my cup of tea, and I’d pick quite a few other places before choosing Disney. However I wouldn’t be vocal about my opinion if someone said they were going…I’d just accept they like different things to me.

Disney Florida isn’t really the same cost as Zante though is it? Everyone I know spends at least over 10K when they do Disney Florida.

it can be!

i found a deal that was 4.5k for flights, transfers hotel (Disney hotel) and park tickets 10 days (2 adults 2 kids) helped that it was last min school hols which is off season at Disney and then had to pass on a wedding that would’ve cost me 4.7k for 1 week in Zante (school hols though). Half board in Zante and room only
disney

Genuinely didn’t realise it was possible to get it that low price.

I think some of the comment may be because of the cost. I know when I hear people going there I think “good lord imagine spending that much money to go there and queue and be around lots of people”….I’d never say that but lots of my internal feeling about it is because of how much people spend on it.

It’s rare and you have to be prepared to shop around and go at any time but you definitely can. How expensive Zante was however utterly floored me

We went when our DD was 3 and it was magical. To see her face light up seeing the characters she loved was priceless. We still talk about that trip 13 years later and DD loves looking at the pics. She actually wants to go again age 15! Yours are the perfect age. Have an amazing time. And ignore the negging, you will love it.

Oh fantastic!

it’s weird though. I’ve never encountered a destination to stir quite that reaction.

camping for instance for me is like like my idea of hell (Ie pitching a tent) some people absolutely love it and I actually wish I was one of them but I’ve been and hated it but I’d never ever say to someone who’s excited for their break

Surely the only response when someone tells you where they are going on holiday, is 'ooh lovely'.
People are twats and I reckon some of the negative responses are driven by jealousy.
It's horses for courses 🤷‍♀️

cushioncovers · 08/09/2023 14:34

I've been 3 times and we had a great time. It's was hot and busy but it's a fantastic place if you just want to have fun.

Yep, that's all people should say, why people want to shit on other people's fun I'll never know.

I don’t know, I got the vibe that some thought it was quite ‘basic’ ie a place with someone of low levels of sophistication would go to, one or two of those people have described themselves as ‘not resort people’ and not liking the ‘sort of people that do resorts’ so I wonder if that’s part of it too.

Our family do Disney. No place better for all the generations to come together and see young children's excitement and pure joy. Yes it's expensive but nobody does it like Disney. The parades, the rides, meeting the characters, the fireworks-just love it!

Beezknees · 08/09/2023 14:43

I took DS but I really didn't enjoy it much. I don't like rides as I get motion sickness so I barely went on anything, I hate crowds and it was so overpriced. Literally only did it for DS's benefit and I'd never go back.

I wouldn't shit on anyone else's holiday though, we all like different things. Mumsnet hates AI holidays but I enjoy them sometimes.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 08/09/2023 14:50

I don't really know any Disney holiday type people but I couldn't care less where other people choose to go on holiday.

I've seen pictures on FB if a couple of school mum acquaintances that went at it looks like a complete waste of money to me but each to their own.

Soubriquet · 08/09/2023 14:52

I would love to take my kids to Disney. I just can’t afford to.

I don’t get why people are snobby about it. Even if you don’t like Disney, there’s still so much to do

Cazzovuoi · 08/09/2023 14:53

I’d rather chew glass than be around that many kids in one place … that’s why I don’t like it.

But would you say that to someone who booked a holiday there and was excited about it? That’s the question lol.

Took DD when she was 2 to Eurodisney as it had just opened and was only a couple of hours from us at the time. Never went back.
When she finished prep school at 11 we went to the Florida one for 4 or 5 days - Discovery Cove had just opened and was best bit. It was ok but not really my cup of tea. She enjoyed it which was main point,
From Florida we flew to California and did SF, Yosemite, Death Valley, Vegas driving round from our friend's base in NorCal. We finished with 3 days in New York. If we had finished at Disney I would have been disappointed.
There is so much more to see in Florida than Disney and defo worth making a trip of it rather than the whole time at fantasy land.
I don't hate it but once was enough! Each to their own.

We’ve gone just Disney, factoring in lots of breaks and rest days for the kiddos. Next time I think we’d do more!

Some people are horribly snobby about Disney.
When I was a teaching assistant on a ridiculous low wage my lovely Dad used his redundancy money to take the family to Disney. Several of the teaching staff said said they could think of nothing worse and were scornful of somewhere they had never been.
We loved it and have returned several times over the years. My Dad has sadly passed away but we have so many wonderful memories of our holidays.
We have just booked to go again, Im 65 and DH 70 and we can't wait!

shearwater · 08/09/2023 15:02

I think it would be nice to go once but also sounds rather overpriced, hot and stressful in Florida.

We might go to the Paris one at some point.

I prefer relaxing holidays which do not involve theme parks.

Needmorelego · 08/09/2023 15:05

I don't enjoy theme parks and am fairly "meh" about Disney so I really wouldn't want to go to one of the Disney parks so I wouldn't be going even if I could afford too.
I also wouldn't want to go to an All Exclusive place in Spain or wherever, clubbing in Ibiza, Backpacking around India, luxury in Dubai, a wine tour of the vineyards of France or 1001 other holidays that people do.
Everyone likes different things. In my head I might think "urrgh" or "why" but I wouldn't say anything to them. I would say 'Have a nice time". Do people really say horrible things about other people holiday choices? How strange.
Oh and I am not even sure where Zante is so I can't comment on whether that's a "better" holiday destination.

Spareus · 08/09/2023 15:07

I hated the idea but we felt it would be nice for the kids to experience, have to say we screamed with laughter the entire week and had a ball. Offset it by a week in St Pete’s afterwards so I knew that respite was coming which I dare say took the edge off. We all preferred universal to Disney and no way would I take toddlers there, they’ll never remember the experience - but glad we did it. The whole Florida shopping mall thing is tacky though.

Stompythedinosaur · 08/09/2023 15:07

I think some people harbour an idea that child entertainment focused holidays are lower class.

We went the Disney world last year and had a lovely time, but it clearly wouldn't have been everyone's cup of tea.

While it's great if some people have managed to find deals, it is generally a very expensive holiday I think. Despite being savvy and using discounts, we were definitely closer to 10k. I don't think many people manage it for 4.5k (obviously good luck to people who can).

MondieBee · 08/09/2023 15:09

Is there enough in the park to occupy ten days? That feels like a long amount of days to essentially keep going back to essentially the same theme park. Other seem to say 3 - 6 days is enough.

Anyway yes it's rude to say that to someone, just nod and say that you good the person has a lovely time. I can't imagine travelling all that way and not really seeing anything of the country I'm in, but we all want different things out of travel. I equally wouldn't enjoy a week in a resort hotel in the med and I bet plenty of the people poo pooing you do that.
