Walt Disney world florida or Disney in general

yes it’s expensive and it’s not for everyone but if you went as a child and have fond memories then you’ve got nostalgia or if you / your kids like the movies then It seems great.

im taking my kids, will be 5 and nearly 3 but flip me, people are so weird about it. So so so weird. I don’t know most people if they don’t ‘rate’ a holiday destination normally give a oh nice, or a minimal response but I met up with a wider group of friends the other day, so friends of friends, talking about hols and stuff, I got ‘oh gross, sorry to hear that hahaha’ and ‘my idea of hell’ and ‘waste of money’. I don’t know, I’d never crap on someone’s holiday that they were clearly excited about.

if you hunt around, like I did you can get an amazing deal that’s frankly cheaper than 1 week in Zante.

And travelling a long way to somewhere you could experience another culture and then massively failing to do anything but eat burgers and look at Mickey Mouse - bleugh

There is a fair whack of culture in WDW - Epcot has 11 different countries in its showcase, Mexico, Japan, Norway and many others which are staffed by people from those areas. I always learn something new when I go - obviously not as much as going to the actual place but that's not something I can't do at the moment.

As for burgers, that's a very dim view of the food on offer. Yes there are burgers - and De 'Luxe burger is amazing, but there are also so much more on offer, African at Boma. Chinese at Nine Dragons, Sushi at Morimoto Asia, etc
So much GOOD food that people make a living from it :) https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/

We (just DH and I, kids staying at home for this 4th visit) are going when the Food and Wine festival is on and I am very much looking forward to Kakigori, Beignet aux Trois Fromages and Impossible Moussaka to name but a few.

@Dreamhols I hope you have an amazing time, make sure you get your ESTA sorted in plenty of time and as well as The Dibb, check out It's Orlando Time on Facebook for any help etc

I have been twice with my kids and loved it both times. We didn't just do the parks, and there is also awesome discounted designer outlets to pop into xx

So many people who have never been to Disney World seem to have very strong and mostly incorrect ideas about what it is like as a holiday destination. We have been lucky enough to go multiple times with children and then grandchildren and on our own and loved all of them

We had a retired maiden Aunt who couldn’t understand why we went so often and told us we should go elsewhere. We invited her on a holiday with us and told her we were going to Spain. This was in the days before all the visas etc that you now need. We boarded the plane before we told her where we were going. She had a blast and loved all of it. When we were having family discussions about our next Disney holiday she said let her know the dates and how much the airfare would be as she was coming with us. We spent some amazing times over there with her

I’m writing this surrounded with lists paperwork and packing ready for our next trip

ohdamnitjanet · 10/09/2023 12:10

I’ve never been and don’t want to now - but oh I’d have been SO excited if we could have gone when I was a child / teen! Isn’t that the point? Don’t pay any heed at all to any snobbish miserable bastards who turn their noses up 😊

Takoneko · 10/09/2023 12:15

Yep, people can be really weird about theme parks. I’ve never been to Disneyworld, but have had similar reactions from people who can’t get their heads around why I’d want to visit Disneyland in Tokyo or Hong Kong or France. I don’t have kids either, which brings out a whole other level of judgement. Enjoy your holiday.

BorgQueen · 10/09/2023 12:45

People who haven’t been think it’s just an Alton towers type place, they have no idea that it’s 4 huge, differently themed parks plus water parks plus Disney Springs ( always Downtown Disney to me 😉).
There’s something wrong with someone who wouldn’t well up when walking down Main St and seeing the Christmas or Halloween decorations.
The Garden festival at Epcot is stunning.

The onsite resorts are incredible.

My one regret is that we didn’t buy DVC 15 years ago, but you can rent DVC villas for a lot less than going through Disney itself and still get the perks.

Underestimated4 · 10/09/2023 12:56

It’s each to my own but for someone whose not hugely into rides, gets anxiety travelling and hates queuing - not my idea of fun.

pinotnow · 10/09/2023 12:59

It's so rude to comment on someone else's holiday. Some people are snobs but others are inverted snobs, which is just as bad when they choose to vocalise their thoughts. I've taken my dc to DLP but have also done camping holidays, city breaks and various other things and have been on the receiving end of comments about how my kids would surely rather be in arcades than museums etc. Why people can't just say, 'Ooh lovely' when others tell them of their plans and activities I have no idea.

ThePoshUns · 10/09/2023 13:12

I've been to Florida twice and we had fabulous family holidays.
I didn't think it would be my thing at all but I'd go back again - probably when I have grandchildren.
I agree it can be cheap if you put it together yourself.
We went a second time when I realised 2 weeks AI in the Greek islands wasn't much cheaper.
I saved money by booking non direct flights, changing at Newark with American Airlines.
Was straightforward and saved a few hundred pounds per person.
We rented a townhouse on a gated development as opposed to a villa with a pool.

jumpingbean1810 · 10/09/2023 20:29

We're going in October and paying the same for 1 adult and 1 teen as you're paying for x4. I have to admit I feel a but sick at the thought of the cost as there are so many places I'd rather go. I went when I was 12 and loved it, thus taking daughter now but keep thinking we could have done an amazing two week holiday in peak summer for same price.

Astridastro · 11/09/2023 08:09

I have friends who love camping, they go camping every year sometimes several times a year. They go on about how great it is all the time, they were always telling me I should go take the kids etc. constantly.

It’s my idea of hell staying in a tent for 2 weeks, there is utterly no chance I would ever go on a camping holiday but I had the good manners to listen to them go on about how great their holidays are etc. They love them and that’s great for them. But then they would say how they couldn’t do one of our holidays I be found that rude. Anyway for us Disney was the best holiday we’ve ever been on and it was little things we could have stayed on the resort for a week in itself it was so amazing. Service, the people. Each to their own

Splishsplashsplooshsplosh · 11/09/2023 08:56

But LOADS of people make comments like "oh my god I could NEVER stay on a tent" if I mention we're going camping. I mean fair enough I'm not a big fan either but I suck it up every now and again because DH and the kids bloody love it and it's cheap. I would probably say "cool! Have a nice time" if someone told me they were going to Disney but if they proved further would happily admit I hate it there because of the awful bloody queues and the expense. And yes I've been. Twice. Never again though.

Chestnutz · 11/09/2023 08:59

Ignore them - your holiday. We go camping and some friends say it’s their idea of hell. I’m absolutely fine with that!

HoppingPavlova · 11/09/2023 09:06

I’d smile and nod and say have a nice time. But in my head I’d think the person was crackers. I’ve been and would never take kids under high school age. A waste of money as you can do other things with them that would make them equally happy but without the expense. Also, while rare unicorns exist, 3yo’s in general will never remember so the whole ‘making memories’ trope is tripe. A high schooler will get bang for buck including in the memories department. Also, little kids and planes, why?

We told ours we were happy to take them once the youngest was old enough. Then happy memories all round forever. Also, no amount of a kid enjoying some rides and Mickey can make up for inflicting a 3yo on other passengers for a 15hr flight to LA or 18hr flight (with a flight transfer) to Florida.

I always find those sorts of comments so rude. Especially the “You poor thing” and “gross”. Not just about holidays, but anything.

Yes, we all like different things. But the above comments aren’t even an opinion (which you also didn’t ask for)… the comments are just a put down. Think before you speak applies here.

Any chance they’re just jealous?
