Walt Disney world florida or Disney in general

yes it’s expensive and it’s not for everyone but if you went as a child and have fond memories then you’ve got nostalgia or if you / your kids like the movies then It seems great.

im taking my kids, will be 5 and nearly 3 but flip me, people are so weird about it. So so so weird. I don’t know most people if they don’t ‘rate’ a holiday destination normally give a oh nice, or a minimal response but I met up with a wider group of friends the other day, so friends of friends, talking about hols and stuff, I got ‘oh gross, sorry to hear that hahaha’ and ‘my idea of hell’ and ‘waste of money’. I don’t know, I’d never crap on someone’s holiday that they were clearly excited about.

if you hunt around, like I did you can get an amazing deal that’s frankly cheaper than 1 week in Zante.

Quite a lot of snobbery involved, I imagine. Theme park vacations aren't for everyone. Lack of culture, fast food etc. Do what makes you happy. I can't ski but I'm thrilled that others love it.

Phos · 08/09/2023 15:10

I probably wouldn’t say much if someone mentioned they were going there but Disney really wouldn’t be my idea of a nice holiday. I don’t really want to spend my holidays queuing for and going on rides and having to deal with crowds.

Then again I’m not a Disney adult and my daughter isn’t that fussed about Disney either so “seeing her face light up with a magic of it all” wouldn’t really be a thing so I guess it makes it a little pointless for us. Different if they’re into that sort of thing.

I think some people harbour an idea that child entertainment focused holidays are lower class.

We went the Disney world last year and had a lovely time, but it clearly wouldn't have been everyone's cup of tea.

While it's great if some people have managed to find deals, it is generally a very expensive holiday I think. Despite being savvy and using discounts, we were definitely closer to 10k. I don't think many people manage it for 4.5k (obviously good luck to people who can).

To be clear the 4.5k was the cost of room board flight and tickets, not spending money or food when out there.

that we’ve baked in about £100/£150 a day and a limit of 2 souvenirs for the kids. Bringing the cost down is a Walmart run for snacks and breakfast items, and water bottles and squeezy squash from home and ice water from the quick service restaurants. One character experience dining and the rest mainly quick service. Probably around 6k when you factor that all In

I've never been interested because it's in central Florida and too humid. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Have been to Disneyland a million times so I'm not anti Disney by any stretch. It just isn't for me.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/09/2023 15:12

Disneyland wouldn’t be to my taste, but I’m sure my perfect holiday wouldn’t appeal to some people either. What is the point in judging what other people do for fun, when it has no impact on me? Live and let live.

Thepeopleversuswork · 08/09/2023 15:12

I personally wouldn't spend that kind of money on a whole holiday centred around a theme park. I would very quickly find it boring and I prefer to do other things on holiday. I absolutely would not articulate it to people in that way if they had chosen to do that.

I think there's quite a lot of snobbery involved here to be honest OP. A lot of this sort of thing boils down to people worrying far too much about what they think others with think about them based on their lifestyle and consumer spending and some people find the Disney thing a bit naff.

But life's too short to worry about what other people think so screw them. If you enjoy it, go and enjoy it.

Is there enough in the park to occupy ten days? That feels like a long amount of days to essentially keep going back to essentially the same theme park. Other seem to say 3 - 6 days is enough.

Anyway yes it's rude to say that to someone, just nod and say that you good the person has a lovely time. I can't imagine travelling all that way and not really seeing anything of the country I'm in, but we all want different things out of travel. I equally wouldn't enjoy a week in a resort hotel in the med and I bet plenty of the people poo pooing you do that.

in florida there are 4 parks and 2 water parks although they seem to alternate as to which is open. There’s more than enough to occupy 2 weeks, especially as you tend to need a break in the middle of the day due to heat and tiredness, then you factor in rest days at the pool or water park or exploring other hotels. Plus there are shows and all that too!

Hi! I'm just looking at booking Disney Florida today. What hotel did you book? Airlines? That's a very good price.

Echobelly · 08/09/2023 15:15

We took kids to Disneyland Paris when they were 4 and 7 and we had an opportunity to go off season. We were kind of cynical about it and most people we spoke to were as well but the kids were the right age and it we thought we should take the opportunity. Had an absolutely fantastic time, don't feel the need to ever do it again mind (though the kids still talk about it 8 years later) but you do can have a really special experience and I'd say it's a treasured memory for us all.

jealousy

no class or self awareness

enjoy your holiday!

We are DVC members and go every year. I’m laughing out loud at people saying by ‘it’s boring’ or ‘there’s nothing to do but queue’. I did New York for 5 days and hated it. Not really into Disney films but the parks are just amazing. The food is AMAZING not just fast food and it’s a really premium experience, especially if you stay in a deluxe Disney hotel. I wouldn’t go anywhere else. Skiing really IS boring - going up and down the same few mountains, no thanks!

Splishsplashsplooshsplosh · 08/09/2023 15:20

I'm not sure it's snobby though. I would hate Disney (I've been twice) and it's not that I'm too "cultured" I just can't stand the crowds and queues. If I was mega rich and could hire out the park just for our mates I'd bloody love it. Can't really see that ever happening though unfortunately!

It was tui, allstar movies, last min.

they have similar deals for the sports now, but it looked a bit run down for me. But if you like pop can get 2 weeks for 6.5 at Xmas which obviously would be lovely with x mas decs

Talk to me about this! I’ve seen a lot about this, but it’s really confused me. How much does it cost.

i looked at renting dvc points and the price for the suite at akl for 2k for 2 weeks I was floored at how cheap it was… seemed too good to be true

I hated Disneyland Paris as a child. I was about 7 or 8 and too small for the rides I wanted to go on but too old for the rides that were height appropriate. I hated having to stand next to Mickey Mouse for a photo too. Just reminded me of Butlins. I assume it has improved over the decades and Florida would no doubt wipe the floor with the Paris one but can empathise with people who think it would be an awful experience. I would probably enjoy it now I'm an adult but it was a pretty disappointing memory as a child as was Legoland

ManateeFair · 08/09/2023 15:26

I've never been to Disneyworld (I don't have kids) so I've never really observed anyone's reaction to it, but I can totally see why people love Disney - especially with a young family! I personally wouldn't choose it for my own holiday but I can imagine it being a really fab family trip.

From the comments you were getting, it sounds like a classic case of people who either can't comprehend the radical notion that different people like different things, or just can't stand to see other people happy (there are lot of both types of people on Mumsnet, I've noticed - people who are convinced that anyone who appears happy on Facebook is actually miserable and that anyone who seems loved-up with their husband is getting cheated on, people who get worked up about other people's clothes/makeup choices etc).

As others have said - it's obnoxious to piss on someone's chips like that. I don't expect my mates to choose holidays I would like, I expect them to choose the holidays they like, and I'm delighted for them when they have a good time.

And it really doesn't matter if it's costing you a fortune or if you managed to grab a bargain - even if you'd re-mortgaged your house for it, it would still be none of their bloody business!

You'll have a fantastic time and I bet it will be lovely to experience it with your kids. I think what lots of people look for in a holiday is a complete escape from real life, and I'd imagine that Disney will definitely deliver on that score. You'll have loads of fun.

SirenSays · 08/09/2023 15:28

99% of other people's holidays sound like hell. That's ok, it's their holiday, not mine. I just smile and wish them a nice time. Have a great time at Disney and ignore all the fun sponges!

I used to have an annual pass to Disneyland and Disneysea in Japan when I lived there and it's fairly common for friends to just go there on weekends or after work on weekdays, eat some food, maybe take some rides, see the fireworks/parades.

To be fair though, Disneyland (to many people in the UK) is seen as a place for kids/families whereas in Japan it felt more like a place for couples/friends.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 08/09/2023 15:33

People are twats and I reckon some of the negative responses are driven by jealousy.

I doubt it. Some people are just more robust in giving their opinions, and some people are less sensitive, don't take differences of opinion as a personal criticism, and wouldn't mind at all if someone said they hated the idea of that kind of holiday.

I like camping, but I'm well aware that for some people it's their idea of hell. If I said 'We're going camping to France this year." and someonè replied "Oh god - I couldn't possibly go camping, it's my idea of hell!", I'd laugh and wouldn't be remotely offended.

I took dd to Disneyland Paris when she was little and didn't like it. And I like Disney films. I don't hate all theme parks (I actively liked Legoland) but Disneyland was just too much. And I presume it pales into insignificance compared with the Florida one!

Remembering39862 · 08/09/2023 15:34

I’m going for 10 days this month and absolutely can’t wait. I’m 30, don’t have kids, will be wearing themed outfits every day, and don’t care if other people judge!

This will be my second Disney World visit as an adult (after two as a child), and I also went to Disneyland California a few years ago. Each time has been completely brilliant, and I’ve never run out of things to do regardless of the length of the trip.

I really don’t understand why people are so weird about Disney holidays… even if it’d be your holiday from hell, just be polite, the same as you would when discussing someone’s plans for any other holiday! Crapping on a friend’s excitement is just unnecessary and rude.

fearfuloffluff · 08/09/2023 15:38

I'm a hypocrite because I do let kids watch Disney stuff to keep them quiet. But... Disney is American imperialism so I don't want a holiday saturated in it. Monocultural anodyne bullshit.

The kids would probably love it but the best they can hope for is a half-arsed British theme park, I'm afraid.

I can see why kids love it, but I would judge an adult for liking it unironically.

Redebs · 08/09/2023 15:39

I would much prefer camping over Disney. Personal choice.

fearfuloffluff · 08/09/2023 15:39

And travelling a long way to somewhere you could experience another culture and then massively failing to do anything but eat burgers and look at Mickey Mouse - bleugh

I think Paris might be responsible for a lot of people disliking it as a potential holiday destination. If you love it and your kids do that is all that matters! I'm sure it's a magical experience for those who love that sort of thing. It's just personal preference
