How much drinking is too much?

ellie09 · 07/09/2023 22:13

Just your own thoughts 😊

I would have 2-3 bottles prosecco per week. Spread throughout the week - say one on Wednesday, Friday, Sunday.

Is this excessive to you?

I drink a bottle and feel.completely fine and capable to deal.with an emergency and as a full time worker and single mum I am keen to know your thoughts

fYI I don't binge drink on one day

Yes I'd say that's excessive

Worryingly so tbh

MissJoGrant · 07/09/2023 22:17

If you ask that on here most MNs will say almost any amount is too much. They will also quote the hilarious government guideline of 14 units per week.

Your amount seems normal to me.

Henry01 · 07/09/2023 22:18

Seems fine - I’m not sure how many units it is in total or how many you’re allowed but I’d say it’s not excessive or binging

It's not worryingly so ffs.

Anyone who has more than a thimble full of sherry at Christmas, is an abhorrent pissed alcoholic according to some on MN.

Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf · 07/09/2023 22:21

Christ.

well. 3 pints and 3 double g n t so far.

do I drink too much. Probably yes.

I’ve nearly died 3 times (not drink related) so I think I mostly don’t give a crap.

Blackblueandgold · 07/09/2023 22:23

That's rather a lot in my world. I only drink prosecco on special occasions, I didn't realise people drank it as a normal drink.

TheWayofBeing · 07/09/2023 22:23

Yes to me that's a bit excessive. Not massively. A bottle in a night is OK on maybe one weekend night. I wouldn't do it thrice.

I think 3 beers or mixed drinks or a few glasses of wine on a Friday or Saturday are OK.

I mean it's fine as a once off or at Christmas but if it's every week I think it could have longer term effects. Personally It would affect my sleep and clarity the next day more than make me drunk on the night.

It's 27 units if that helps make your mind up.

ellie09 · 07/09/2023 22:23

Yes, I usually work on the units. There's about 8.4 in a bottle of prosecco, so about 3-4 pints of beer at most, which doesn't seem like a lot

I drink just as a relaxation tool when I am watching TV once LO in bed. It helps me sleep a little easier as well, and always in bed for 11pm and up for our 7am alarm 😂

8 hour sleep so try to kid myself 🫣

I mean it's not like it's expensive. No different to regular wine really.

Leo227 · 07/09/2023 22:24

technically it's too much and too many units, so likely to be causing health problems later down the line. I drink a similar amount and know I should cut it down.

I don't think that's excessive

What I feel is excessive is if it has an impact on others, how does behaviour change etc. That is the problem

Abouttimemum · 07/09/2023 22:26

I don’t drink at home at all so I’d find drinking a whole bottle of something excessive because I’d be smashed! I think 3 bottles a week is a bit excessive.

DH has two bottles of red wine a week and again I feel like a whole bottle is a bit much, but he’s also fine (well, within reason!)

No change. Everything as normal, homework done, dinner done, dog walked. Its a relaxation thing I feel I need/deserve midweek and at the weekend.

I work Mon-Fri and this doesn't impact

If you're using it to help you sleep you should know that alcohol affects sleep quality rather than falling asleep. So you're asleep because it's a sedative but it affects the balance of REM and slow wave sleep and causes disruptions.

So if you find it hard to fall asleep it's making it worse long term and can get you in a cycle of being sleepy in the day because your sleep quality wasn't good, staying awake with coffee etc and then not being able to sleep again.

The guideline of 14 units per week isn’t a moral judgement, it’s a measure after which alcohol-related disease and conditions become prevalent enough to become ‘high risk’.

2-3 bottles of Prosecco a week is 18-29 units, so it definitely surpasses that measure, and therefore means that higher risk.

I say this as someone who drinks almost daily. There’s no point getting defensive against a measurement of risk.

HungryandIknowit · 07/09/2023 22:30

It sounds like quite a lot imo. The 3 bottles a week seems a bit much but more so drinking a whole bottle in 1 night. I sleep a lot better if I haven't been drinking (quality of sleep).

I use it to relax rather than sleep!

I did use the TRIP drinks for a bit, but they were very expensive IMO

For me, age has been a big factor. I used to be able to drink that and enjoy it with no effects.

Now I feel sluggish on more than two bottles or so a week, so I either drink at the weekend or in the week a depending on social commitments- but not both.

It's a shame as I do find drinking in a JR moment very relaxing.

PickAPark · 07/09/2023 22:33

"in the moment" that should read. No idea what JR thinks...

ChocolateCinderToffee · 07/09/2023 22:33

I think that’s a bit much. I had friends staying recently and we each drank about four units a day. Normally I drink about that in a week, but I think that was normal for them. I’d be cutting back a bit tbh.

ItSoundsLikeADrag · 07/09/2023 22:34

6 units in one go is classed as binge drinking for women (8 for men)
plenty of people will be along to say ‘it’s fine’ but that’s because they too drink a fair bit.
The recommended units per week are 14 so yes, it is excessive, and you run the increased risk of CVD and some cancers.
I drink a bottle and feel.completely fine
This alone shows your tolerance is alarmingly high which should be a concern.

I’m an ex drinker who used to drink wine by the bottle 2/3 times a week…until that wasn’t enough. It really is a slippery slope.

Yeah I get you!

I would drink 8.5 units of a bottle in 3 hours or so, so I just feel bit sleepy and relaxed, not drunk

I do wonder about the health impacts though

Not really 🙄

BigFluffyHair · 07/09/2023 22:36

I used to be a bit like this. Trip drinks and Oils are no more expensive (probably less so) and result (for me at least) in restful sleep and much less anxiety
