I've seen several people wearing a mask in shopping centres and on buses and trains.

Because they want too.

Maybe they have symptoms of illness and they don't want to spread them around. Masks don't stope it 100% but it helps stops sneeze goo and cough vapour etc etc.

Timeforchangeithink · 07/09/2023 21:55

Because it makes them feel safer or they've got a bug and they don't want to spread it or they just want to, live and let live.

OCaroLiner · 07/09/2023 21:56

Because they are clinically vulnerable and have been advised to. I have a parent having cancer treatment right now and that is what they have been told to do, particularly if they are in a crowd.

itsmylife7 · 07/09/2023 21:57

Because Covid made them completely paranoid about death.

I've a family member still living like its lockdown.....very sad situation.

ShadyPaws · 07/09/2023 21:57

Because covid is spreading again and I have a shit immune system and don't want it again
Getting covid means anti virals, time off work, loss of money, feeling shit, losing fitness, whatever risks catching it time and time again means long term...

Throwncrumbs · 07/09/2023 21:57

Because I don’t want some grim fucker who doesn’t cover their mouth, coughing all over me when I’m out and about, whether they have covid or not!

LindorDoubleChoc · 07/09/2023 21:57

Yabu. It's pretty obvious.

Meowandthen · 07/09/2023 21:57

Because COVID is still around. Cases in the UK are still quite high.

Many people have health issues so want to be extra careful.

it doesn’t affect you in any way so why are you bothered? In much of the Far East it is standard practice to wear a mask if you have even a sniffle so you reduce the risk of passing it on. It’s consideration for others, something proven to be significantly lacking in the UK.

Bloomingpasswords · 07/09/2023 21:57

I have a relative with almost no immune system due to chemotherapy treatment for cancer. They’ve been told that catching Covid (and some other illnesses) would leave them extremely ill.

they could sit indoors and never go out but they also want a life so they wear a mask in certain places.

GCAcademic · 07/09/2023 21:58

How does this affect you, exactly, OP?

Iwant2move · 07/09/2023 21:59

Because I am a carer for my clinically vulnerable parent. I wear one in Spring because my allergies are significantly improved by mask wearing.

Somanycats · 07/09/2023 21:59

I've seen a rise in mask wearing in London today. It was so hot I can't imagine anyone was wearing them for fun! I presume they either have covid and are trying to protect us or they are aware of the covid numbers in hospital rising again and worried for their own health and don't want to catch it. What other reasons could there be?

nether · 07/09/2023 21:59

Because not everyone can afford several days of sick leave 3 or 4 times a year, nor wants to run the risk of long covid

Or perhaps they are particularly vulnerable to covid, or regularly visit someone who is.

Blinkinbloodyhayfever · 07/09/2023 21:59

I wore a mask when I had a bad cold out of courtesy when lots of viruses were rife this December. I think most people do the same now, don't they?

Chobbers · 07/09/2023 21:59

Because they’re clinically extremely vulnerable? Covid especially can be very serious for immunosuppressed people but so can other infections.

I know for my mother its psychological. It makes her feel safer. And since it effects no one but her it should be her choice.

Cosyblankets · 07/09/2023 22:00

Is this a genuine question?
You really don't know?
I'm not wearing one at the min but i don't need to ask why there are people wearing them. Because I'm not daft

ErrolTheDragon · 07/09/2023 22:01

It's maybe odder that more people aren't wearing masks when there's an upsurge in cases and last years boosters are waning.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, DH and I are having covid for the first time now.

HectorSalamanca · 07/09/2023 22:01

I have seen it a lot more recently, but I don't judge. I understand their reasoning, but I have seen people with masks on, driving alone, in their cars. I do think that's a bit odd.

backoffbuster · 07/09/2023 22:02

My work want you in if you have Covid, but are not unwell with it. I’d be wearing a mask in that situation as I wouldn’t want to spread it to vulnerable colleagues.

Leo227 · 07/09/2023 22:03

Covid was really bloody awful when I got it, I'd really not like to go through that again so I'll be wearing one again if rates get high in my area.

ShadowPuppets · 07/09/2023 22:03

I assume anyone wearing one has Covid but has to go to work. So I take it as a sign to give them a wide berth!

Lou670 · 07/09/2023 22:03

Because I am in the clinically vulnerable group. I don't wear one all of the time, but I do in crowded busy settings. It is personal choice for me and everyone else that chooses to. Thank your lucky stars that you don't need to.

Why does it have to "affect" me? And where have I said it does? There's nothing wrong with asking the question.
