I've seen several people wearing a mask in shopping centres and on buses and trains.

Judging by the replies I don't think we'll ever see the end of masks.

Fingers crossed that wearing a mask when one has a cold etc DOES become the norm in this country. It will stop a lot of people getting ill, and allow the immune-suppressed to lead more normal lives. Plus, you know, would indicate people people actually cared about each other?

People can wear whatever they like , why does it bother you so much ?

Probably not. We've learnt they stop us catching as many viruses.

Because they are idiots.

Even the ones who've told you they are wearing a mask to protect children with cancer?

NeedANewPhone1 · 07/09/2023 22:43

I popped one on last week because I was recovering from a cold (or maybe Covid) and had to pop out. I didn't want to spread my illness unnecessarily. No inconvenience to me. (I had stayed in while ill, as I had the option to).

I had a cold recently and wore a mask on public transport to avoid spreading it. It’s common courtesy.

May I just say thank you for this? I so appreciate it when I see people doing this, as someone who is immune suppressed and having to be careful!

No, we probably won't.

In countries which were affected by SARS back in 2002, I think it is still considered good manners to wear a mask when you are ill.

greenspaces4peace · 07/09/2023 22:43

i assume they or a close family member are immunocompromised.
lots of medications decrease a person's resistance to illness.
people with cancer and receiving treatment live in the community vs days of old being in hospital.

WandaWonder · 07/09/2023 22:44

Why does it matter if people wear them?

drinkuptheezider · 07/09/2023 22:44

Mind you some of the... ahem...less desirable people wear them to avoid identification. The local drug runners on their scooters seem to be the most community minded in wearing 😷 😂

I assume it's because they have covid

PurpleMonkeys · 07/09/2023 22:45

Every single person that dropped dead with or from COVID, they caught it from someone..

Just think about that..

Every single kid that gets the awful flu and cries because they ache so bad etc, they caught it from someone.

Every single case of Diarrhea and Vomiting that you ever had, you got it from someone.

So all the dumb responses about people being thick or attention seeking, they might prefer to wear a mask because they'd rather not: be responsible for a kid having no parent anymore,
a kid getting bad flu,
you getting D&V.

NoYohgurtAgain · 07/09/2023 22:46

It’s so heartening to read so many people wear masks when they go out and are ill. as someone who has lost family due to covid I’m really aware of the harm we can cause if we just go about our business normally when ill.

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 07/09/2023 22:46

I wear one because my dad is having chemo and I want to protect him from catching any sort of infection.

Braindeads · 07/09/2023 22:47

I’m just getting over a terrible bout of Covid, it’s laid me up for almost 2 weeks so work time lost. I’m still not better, lost my taste and smell and are dizzy and foggy headed and breathless.
Ive never felt like this after a cold before so it annoys me when people say ‘it’s just a cold’. I’ve been knocked off my feet by it and can’t afford to be off work like this every few months, nor do I want to feel so horribly ill as I have done.
I don’t want to wear masks but I want Covid even less.

Tabitha1960 · 07/09/2023 22:48

Greenwitchhorse · 07/09/2023 22:14

I never understood why so many people believed in the first place that those basic, flimsy, cheap masks (that so many did not even wore properly, ie not covering mouth/nose) would work in any way.

Many studies also discredited the effect of medical grade ones when it comes to Covid and the general population.

Always seemed to be more about trying to reassure people and psychological manipulation that anything else...

I was just about to post the same thing, but you beat me to it.

They categorically do not stop the wearer catching a virus nor spreading a virus. Many people who wore one religiously still caught covid.

It's akin to medieval people carrying a talisman to ward off the plague.

ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul · 07/09/2023 22:48

Wisterical · 07/09/2023 22:05

Attention seeking.

Wow, I have a blood clotting disorder and have been advised by my specialist to wear a mask in public places. Why does this make me attention seeking?

Ponderingwindow · 07/09/2023 22:48

If you want to see an end to mask wearing, then change the culture and have people stay home for any illness, no matter how small. People are still contagious before they are aware of illnesses, but it would cut down on the spread of disease.

since no one wants to do that, the vulnerable will continue to do what they have always done and take measures to protect themselves.

I can say with 100% certainty that our household has never had covid and yes, we live quite reclusive lives. We would prefer to be out on the world more than we are, but the world is full of selfish people who go out knowingly spreading germs so we have few options.

NoYohgurtAgain · 07/09/2023 22:49

Wearing a medical grade mask does lower your own risk - to a degree. It certainly lowers the risk of you spreading something.

Congratulations on being so much cleverer than everyone else. I do hope Rishi has you on speed dial in case it all flares up again and Chris Whitty is busy.
