I've seen several people wearing a mask in shopping centres and on buses and trains.

Exactly! We were recovering from COVID but had to drop now healthy DS at school so DH and I wore masks in the playground. I said to the staff that although I couldn't keep him off, I didn't want us to be patient zero of an outbreak. My parents are still really struggling with it and none of us enjoyed the experience of COVID - why wouldn't I try to stop someone else getting it and suffering too?

Attention seeking.

Very odd take - personally, I have never felt so anonymous as when I was wearing a mask in public. Are you often distracted by differences as simple as this? Some people have red hair, others might be wearing a big colourful necklace. Do you give them all the same attention as people in masks?

Because COVID broke people's minds.

Oh the DRAMA!!

rubytubeytubes · 07/09/2023 22:53

there are a number of possible reasons, all obvious:
-to protect themselves from covid/flu/ other respiratory infection ( mask wearing protects against other infections too you know)

  • because they are immunosuppressed
  • because covid cases are rising and makes wearing works
  • because the don’t want long covid
  • its none of your business
ThinWomansBrain · 07/09/2023 22:53

Bizarre couple on the tube the other week wearing those rubbery medical gloves - fine if it makes them feel safer.
The woman kept furiously rubbing her eye with a gloved finger, which seemed to defeat the point.

Congratulations on being so much cleverer than everyone else. I do hope Rishi has you on speed dial in case it all flares up again and Chris Whitty is busy.

Chris Whitty told us in spring 2020 absolutely NOT to wear masks.

As did that Jennie Harris woman.

They told us masks do NOT help and could make things worse.

May I just say thank you for this? I so appreciate it when I see people doing this, as someone who is immune suppressed and having to be careful!

Yes, I would like to thank you too @JanesBlond , being immunosuppressed, it makes me safer too

MixedCouple · 07/09/2023 22:55

Agree it has been proven to be ineffective in preventing spreading and being infected.
Guess whatever makes people.feel comfortable. Even if it is a placebo

Ienjoyedthebarbiemovie · 07/09/2023 22:56

I dunno. I find it a bit much when out in the open. Why would anyone want to breathe their own co2 rather than fresh air

GarlicGrace · 07/09/2023 22:56

I'm not still wearing them, I'm wearing them again. It's spreading fast atm.

southlondoner02 · 07/09/2023 22:56

I've seen lots of people in London wearing them recently. Assumed they're people who are vulnerable but need to get to work, or don't want to spread their germs. Also think the culture of a lot of employers in this country is coming to work when unwell, so this might be part of it.

That said there was a man wearing a mask next to me at the bar in a busy pub earlier. Kept taking it off when he took calls on his phone. Obviously he can wear whatever he wants but I'm not sure his method was particularly effective if he was trying to protect himself/ others from covid.

Attention seeking.

Surely that's you with this sort of post?
Do you also share bollocks on FB/social media and a few equally gullible friends like it and the rest vow to avoid you in the supermarket.

Because they were susceptible to the last 3.5 years of brainwashing.
How does a corrupt government control its people?

Through fear.

The last 3 years has proven how easily people can be totally brainwashed without a single threat. How easily a government and a team of behavioural scientists can use coercion to literally scare people into complying - it took a few days and their job was done.

Had the majority just said “no”, they wouldn’t have even tried to mandate bacteria ridden face nappies. They were sat there in parliament lapping up the compliance!

Somewhereovertherainbowweighapie · 07/09/2023 22:57

I wore a mask recently when I had a cold. I had to go out and I thought I might as well.

Howdidtheydothat · 07/09/2023 22:57

I wore one last week. I had Covid and had to go to pharmacy to get something to stop me feeling so dreadful. Glad I did, I stood for at least 10 mins in a huge queue at the pharmacy in boots with lots of elderly people.

KatyKopykat · 07/09/2023 22:36

Judging by the replies I don't think we'll ever see the end of masks.

Correct.
Some countries eg in Asia already had a public mask wearing culture. Generally they are healthier with longer life expectancies than UK. So we’re probably just catching up.

You don't know what brainwashing is, do you?

Chippy4me · 07/09/2023 22:58

I think it should just be common sense that if you’re ill and need to go out, you wear a mask to limit the risk of others catching it.

If you knew you had an STI you would (hopefully) wear a condom to stop it spreading.

Thesoundofscience · 07/09/2023 22:58

My 10 year old daughter has been bedridden since the beginning of the year with long covid. My family wear N95 masks (which are proven to work) when we are in indoor settings to protect her from catching anything else while she is still so vulnerable.

SirVixofVixHall · 07/09/2023 22:59

Leo227 · 07/09/2023 22:03

Covid was really bloody awful when I got it, I'd really not like to go through that again so I'll be wearing one again if rates get high in my area.

Same.
Everyone seems to have it locally to me. I am going out less often and I may wear a mask again in some circs.

Chris Whitty told us in spring 2020 absolutely NOT to wear masks.

As did that Jennie Harris woman.

They told us masks do NOT help and could make things worse.

True. And then this was reported;

‘Professor Chris Whitty has outlined the three reasons he would still wear a face mask after lockdown ends.
England's Chief Medical Officer said at the latest press conference from No10 said there were situations where he would still put on a face covering.
Prof Whitty said these were:

  1. In any situation that was indoors and crowded, or indoors with close proximity to other people. He said this was because masks protect other people.
  2. If required to wear a mask by any competent authority.
  3. If someone else is uncomfortable with him not wearing a mask. Common courtesy would then mean putting on a face covering, he said.’

Now I know that options two and three are not science based reasons, but option one sounds pretty scientific to me.

Boris Johnson lockdown announcement - here's what he said

Existing rules will be swept away, with stadiums, pubs and restaurants back to normal and no more compulsory facemasks

I was just about to post the same thing, but you beat me to it.

They categorically do not stop the wearer catching a virus nor spreading a virus. Many people who wore one religiously still caught covid.

It's akin to medieval people carrying a talisman to ward off the plague.

You keep telling yourself that sweetpea.

Whisperingangel1 · 07/09/2023 23:01

Is this a wind up? Lots of reasons for wearing a mask particularly with covid cases increasing. Whilst you may not be vulnerable or bothered about covid, others are - those with weakened immune symptoms or elderly/sick family members. If I tested positive for covid I would try to stay at home as much as possible & if I had to go out I would wear a mask and I'd hope others would do the same. Especially since 10% of covid cases lead to long covid and young children haven't been vaccinated against it. So no I don't think it's the same as having a cold.
