I've seen several people wearing a mask in shopping centres and on buses and trains.

Covid is rife again in my area.
I've currently got it and it's been two weeks of feeling so very unwell can't breathe, smell or taste
Flu like symptoms x1000
I wouldn't wish this on anyone and I'm still testing positive despite having it for two weeks
It's nasty so anyone with health issues need to protect themselves and others

Notagains · 07/09/2023 22:30

Because they want to. Why does it matter?

x2boys · 07/09/2023 22:30

itsmylife7 · 07/09/2023 21:57

Because Covid made them completely paranoid about death.

I've a family member still living like its lockdown.....very sad situation.

There is a huge difference between wearing a mask out and about and living in a permanent lockdown
I.haven't worm a,mask for at least two years (apart from when my son was in critical care ) but if someone wants to that's their prerogative

blondieminx · 07/09/2023 22:30

clinically Vulnerable patients (including diabetics, cancer patients, those of us with issues with our immune systems) are 8.5 times more likely to die of covid (stats presented to the U.K. covid inquiry earlier this year).

I would prefer that my health doesn’t decline any further.

I will continue wearing a high grade FFP2 or FFP3 mask to prevent covid getting the chance to get down my airways.

tonystarksrighthand · 07/09/2023 22:30

Because they are idiots who think a little mask protects them as they're vulnerable. Apparently.

TeenLifeMum · 07/09/2023 22:30

@Nightsku or educated in infection control and making a choice based on their individual circumstances. Why can’t people make a choice didn’t to you when it doesn’t impact you at all?

@Maddy70 Where have I judged anyone? Why is asking a question being judgemental?

Attention seeking.

Haha I hope you don't catch it then as it's really not attention seeking in anyway it's protection for the mask wearer
Which actually isn't anyones business but the person wearing a mask

Switcher · 07/09/2023 22:32

Because COVID broke people's minds.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 07/09/2023 22:33

Well, I’m immuno-suppressed (qualify for the covid booster which I haven’t yet had) and so I wear one on busy trains. sorry not sorry.

Switcher · 07/09/2023 22:32

Really
I have covid at the moment and it's very unpleasant
And my mind isn't broken
Give it a rest

Rosejasmine · 07/09/2023 22:34

Because they want to wear one or because they’ve been advised to wear one if they are clinically vulnerable. Simple really!

zeibesaffron · 07/09/2023 22:34

Because there is a new covid variant of concern, which has meant the winter covid booster program will start earlier than planned for the vulnerable- flu season will be upon us soon and we tend to mirror the previous australian flu season, and there is a 70% increase on last year (at this time) diagnosis of norovirus (unusual for this time of the year!)

KatyKopykat · 07/09/2023 22:36

Judging by the replies I don't think we'll ever see the end of masks.

In DM's case, because she's a chemo patient and her immune system is shot.
In my case because I'm her carer.

KatyKopykat · 07/09/2023 22:31

@Maddy70 Where have I judged anyone? Why is asking a question being judgemental?

Because it is blatantly obvious why anyone is wearing a mask,

because they don't want to catch covid,

which, by the way, has decimated the staff at my school this week to the extent that one year group has been told not to come in.

I am under medical advice to wear a mask on public transport and in shops, and have been for over a year

and I have absolutely no idea why you are asking a question with such an obvious answer

sheworemellowyellow · 07/09/2023 22:38

Round here, people in their late teens / early 20s wear them with those ear muffs that look like massive over-ear headphones (they’re a TikTok thing). It’s a sensory thing and/or a “stay in my cocoon, don’t let people bother me, I have anxiety” thing. Both things together dull auditory and olfactory senses, help you feel protected from the nastiness of the world.

When you see them wearing both things AND sunglasses, you know it’s because they don’t want to be identified by CCTV.

and?

Burningthroughthesky · 07/09/2023 22:39

When I see people out wearing a mask, I think fair play, they are out and about and doing what feels comfortable for them.

They might be immunosuppressed, having cancer treatment, vulnerable because of other health conditions, pregnant or be a carer for someone who is. Or they might be ill themselves and are being considerate not to spread their germs. Or they might just feel more comfortable wearing one.

Plus with all the kids going back to school/college/uni, it's peak germ season atm.

Why do you want to?

Are you saying you don’t want ever to see anyone wearing one, ever again?

Its not mandatory now and even when it was there are loads of exemptions ,so.what if people want to.wear a mask its no skin off my nose .

People from Asia have worn them long before covid was around it seems it is a cultural thing so others don't get sick

(Before anyone complains I mean this is as a good not a bad thing)

JanesBlond · 07/09/2023 22:40

I had a cold recently and wore a mask on public transport to avoid spreading it. It’s common courtesy.

Gertrudetheadelie · 07/09/2023 22:40

I actually think it's quite a nice gesture to show respect to those around you if you are ill but forced to go out through necessity. I would do it with any particularly nasty lurgy as a way to minimise the spread of something unpleasant!
