I've seen several people wearing a mask in shopping centres and on buses and trains.

Those saying that they wear one for preventative measures - I thought we’d all agreed that masks stop the wearer from spreading, rather than protecting them from contracting?

No, "we" didn't agree.

Please don't belittle the experiences of people on this thread explaining why they, and/or their loved ones choose to wear a mask.

I wear mine on the tube and in crowded places not had it yet and don't want it.

Bet you've had it and don't know you've had it. Unless you've lived a reclusive lifestyle I really don't know anyone who hasn't had it. Most people (including myself) have had it (confirmed by testing) about 3 times at least, and suspected at least one more itme. And yes, I'm fully vaccinated, to schedule. There seemed to be no correlation between the timing of the vaccinations and the severity of my symptoms so I think that while scientists have probably learned a massive amount about COVID since it first surfaced, I still think it behaves in unexpected ways which we don't fully understand yet. I think most members of the public think this. Some are ultra careful. Others, who work customer facing, but not in health, are maybe reluctant to start re-wearing masks unless it's mandated by their line managers or the government.

Attention seeking.

MissTrip82 · 07/09/2023 22:19

You really can’t think of any reasons? Not one?

You must have an extremely narrow life experience.

Wisterical · 07/09/2023 22:05

Attention seeking.

Said the pot.

Posters are telling you, here, on this thread, that they are wearing a mask to protect loved ones who are having chemo etc.

Takes a special kind of twat to joke about that, wouldn't you agree?

I never understood why so many people believed in the first place that those basic, flimsy, cheap masks (that so many did not even wore properly, ie not covering mouth/nose) would work in any way.

Many studies also discredited the effect of medical grade ones when it comes to Covid and the general population.

Always seemed to be more about trying to reassure people and psychological manipulation that anything else...

Well you’re partially correct.
A material face covering is a bit shit but better than nothing.
A blue surgical mask is ok but it really does need to fit the face well and be worn on the face (there should be no having to keep pulling it up over the nose).

But there is plenty of great evidence that shows a well fitting N95 or N99 mask is fabulous at preventing both spreading and getting infection.

The reason baggy blues are used in hospitals is because they’re cheap and staff are collateral damage.

Some of the ridiculous research that showed they don’t work was things like the test subjects wore the masks for only an hour out of an 8 hr shift etc. And they were then shocked they didn’t work.
We know covid is airborne. We know other countries mandated proper respirators on public transport.

I wasn't aware we were only able to ask about things that affect us.

No but it is a perfectly fair question to ask why you ask.

After all most people are perfectly well aware of the potential reasons people may choose to mask.

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 07/09/2023 22:20

I'm not in London but I'm not seeing any masks when out and about at all! How odd!

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 07/09/2023 22:20

Why do people ask stupid questions on MN?

Fizzology · 07/09/2023 22:21

I caught it a few weeks ago, so I wore a mask and social distanced for a few days. It's a simple thing to do and might stop someone vulnerable from getting Covid.

DilemmaDelilah · 07/09/2023 22:21

Because I am immunosuppressed and if I get another chest infection my mastectomy for breast cancer will have to be put off again.... And I would rather not die thank you.

I assume that they’ve either got Covid but are trying their best not to give it to anyone else, or they don’t have it and are trying their best not to catch it.

It’s a very simple little thing to do that might help you avoid getting ill and doesn’t negatively affect anybody else. If you’re happy to wear a mask, why wouldn’t you? If you’re not happy to wear one, then you don’t need to concern yourself with it.

I wear FFP3 masks. They protect the wearer.

Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic · 07/09/2023 22:23

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 07/09/2023 22:14

Yep.

But just like mask deniers some people still believe they have been told masks protect the wearer.

They do protect the wearer. There are plenty of studies that show this, plus plenty of anecdata too.

But you need a well fitting respirator- not a piece of soggy cloth or a baggy blue that had gaps around your nose.

lunar1 · 07/09/2023 22:25

It's such a fucking stupid question, everyone has their own circumstances. My friends son has cancer, so we wears a mask, as do we if we go round there.

You don't have to agree with another person's perspective, but you should try stepping out of you bubble to understand why people might and differently within a situation.

WandaWonder · 07/09/2023 22:25

I think even if covid was no longer a talking point it might minimise the spread of colds etc.

Also it gives something for people to ask about on here

CPLawyer · 07/09/2023 22:26

Covid is on the rise again... we are coming up to winter and some people have vulnerabilities

drinkuptheezider · 07/09/2023 22:26

I would presume one of the following

Clinically vulnerable
Has covid
Has flu/cold
Has relatives who are Clinically vulnerable
Has relatives with covid

Was scared by the scaremongering government and still thinks that way(along with still distancing/ isolating)

Paranoid
Health anxiety

I struggle with masks as I have hearing issues, I need the visual clues. The pandemic mask wearing was a nightmare.

Stroopwaffels · 07/09/2023 22:26

I had a flu jab today and lots of people were wearing masks. Up to them. Personally I think that unless you’re wearing the super dooper duck hill ones they’re probably pointless- people I saw were in the paper blue masks and fabric masks. But live and let live - if it makes them happy, crack on.

just don’t judge the rest of us who are not wearing masks and start whinging on about “selfish” again.

ShadyPaws · 07/09/2023 22:27

Lou670 · 07/09/2023 22:07

@Wisterical Really? I can think of so many other ways I could be attention seeking rather than wearing a mask.

I know
If I wanted attention I would wear something more fun than a mask ConfusedGrin

Nightsku · 07/09/2023 22:28

Because they are idiots.

TeenLifeMum · 07/09/2023 22:29

My mother in law has covid and was starting to feel better. She popped to the shop and wore a mask because she felt that knowing she had it she should take precautions not to spread it.

in hospitals, if a patient is in A&E with suspected flu the policy is for the patient and nurses and doctors to all wear a mask. The only reason public weren’t asked to was because they thought there would be push back and refusal but it’s standard infection control.

There’s also people who are going through chemo who would benefit from extra protection of a mask.

I personally don’t wear one but understand why others would.

Some have covid symptoms and don't want to pass it on (Chinese people have always done this with a cold etc.)

Sine are immune suppressed so don't want to get a cold, flu or any other virus

Why are you judging others' choices?
