Hosting loud teenager parties in gardens in residential streets

Is this reasonable?

Next door neighbour has given us (and the street) a few days notice of a party that will go on until 12am with loud music and lots of cars arriving /departing. Not enough time to get a room somewhere unfortunately.

I have two primary aged kids and early plans on Sunday morning. Honestly would never be so selfish and would always hire a hall, but I have a feeling I’m in the minority.

AIBU to feel peevish?

Did you really not go to any house parties as a teen? Been to one as an adult? When (if) you were a student?

I’m in my 50’s and went to one in a garden a couple of weeks ago. We were still dancing outside at midnight. It’s a once a year occurrence and the neighbours don’t mind. Why would they?!

WimpoleHat · 05/09/2023 20:23

In all seriousness, though - midnight is a bit unreasonable in a residential area. At least “significantly turned down” after 11 and completely off by midnight is the norm when we’ve had similar things from the Council about local events.

Mrsttcno1 · 05/09/2023 20:23

Was just about to defend my very much NOT hyperbolic comment, but can see it was so obviously not hyperbole that others have already done that! Read the room OP

Berlinlover · 05/09/2023 20:24

I wouldn’t dream of doing this but I know I’m in the minority.

snowmanshoes · 05/09/2023 20:25

The kids bounce balls ?!? You’re moaning at that? Ok I’m out 😂 you win OP ….

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 05/09/2023 20:22

Are your own kids silent?

Bit of shrieking occasionally but no they don’t bounce balls and no they don’t swear loudly in the garden.

You’re obviously finding the thread difficult so it might be best if you go lay down. Playing basketball just to the left of our patio doors is annoying but actually they haven’t done it this year or we’ve just been out more.

Careful! You’ll have everyone at the smelling salts again.

I wonder how people would feel about an adult party during A level or GCSE season?

I suspect it would be met with horror on here as the DCs were too tired to revise. I don’t think ‘live and let live’ or ‘use ear plugs’ would really cut it.

And yet plenty of adults need to get up on weekend mornings, some for far more important reasons.

We live in a weird country and time where the rights of teens to make an outrageous amount of noise, drink, vomit, swear etc etc is virtually fetishised and put ahead of the rights of small children and adults.

Interestingly, pp have talked about young children playing outside early. But, it isn’t true, is it? If toddlers are allowed out to play when they wake up (any time after 6AM mid summer) it is met with complete disgust both on here and in RL. 8-9AM is more like a party finishing 10PM.

NotMadeOfStone · 05/09/2023 20:29

One late night during exam season, so not an issue. Who is studying at midnight on a Saturday?!

SpiderExtinction · 05/09/2023 20:30

RudsyFarmer · 05/09/2023 19:53

Their kids also swear loudly and bounce balls regularly but I guess that also makes me intolerant to find that antisocial.

The swearing is definitely antisocial. Do you mean bouncing their ball against your house or in their own garden?

thaegumathteth · 05/09/2023 20:30

Neighbours had a party in May when ds was studying for his Highers. Didn't really consider being annoyed tbh. It's not every weekend.

RudsyFarmer · 05/09/2023 20:31

I honestly think since Covid societal etiquette has just disappeared. It’s so common place now to just disregard anyone else as long as your own selfish desire are quenched. Gardens are no longer places to garden. They’re social hubs with bars and hot tubs and anyone that doesn’t like it can fuck off. I just don’t remember it being like this before but I am getting on a bit so my memory might not be what it once was.

@NotMadeOfStone ,

You are missing the point. Maybe a loud lunch time BBQ on the Sunday before Maths GCSE, going on into the early evening?

I mean, who would be a killjoy?

Playing basketball for an hour right next to our kitchen doors but I will accept it’s in the daytime and was irritating more than anything. I did ask the kids if they’d mind not swearing so much as my five year old was in the garden and they did quieten down a bit, so again not a huge deal. I think it was their mates shouting and swearing more than them.

On a Saturday night, as a one off and ending around midnight?
Like this one?

A bit annoying, as it anything that disturbs your peace if you want peace, but just one of those things you have to deal with when living in a residential area. I'd be more annoyed if it was mid week.

get off your high horse - you sound so petty and petulant 🤭 ahh bless - yes kick up a fuss - how dare they - stamps feet

So im now on a high horse as well 🤣

While it's a minor annoyance, it does sound like a one-off, and they've given you sufficient notice.

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 05/09/2023 20:39

You are VERY easily offended op.....Going from this thread alone

ThePoshUns · 05/09/2023 20:39

How old are you OP?
I'm 51 and my friends and I socialise in each others homes and gardens and always have done, mainly due to having small children/ no babysitters.
We've always encouraged our children to have their friends over and yes they've had a party here and there. We have great relationships with our neighbours.
When you have neighbours there has to be some give and take.
And as for social etiquette, don't they have garden parties in Buckingham Palace?! Sometimes loud music at night!

TheaBrandt · 05/09/2023 20:42

Definitely don’t ever go to Spain op. There the parties start at 11pm and go on all night! We had “Europes biggest beach party” in the next town to us on holiday a few years ago went on for 3 nights all night! We would watch the clubber teens coming back from it as we had our breakfast! Our walls actually shook.

Our kids were then the same age as yours are now and weirdly slept through it all oblivious we got wax ear plugs - sorted.

gogomoto · 05/09/2023 20:42

Perfectly reasonable occasionally. Your kids will be teens one day. My dd2 went to loads of house parties (dd1 has sen so not her scene) and 11.30 latest pick up was the norm

HerMammy · 05/09/2023 20:42

Perhaps send a copy to the local authority or whoever is responsible for noise enforcement in your area, in advance. Also if you think there is anyone likely to drink and drive, or any hint of drug taking, call the police straight away on the evening.
do ppl actually carry on like this??
pathetic

Goldcircle · 05/09/2023 20:44

Bloody hell fun police
